Citytour Dordrecht in 1 minute | One of best Places to Visit in a citytrip in the Netherlands

A short movie with the best places of Dordrecht, the oldest city of the Netherlands. A must see in your holiday city tour in the Netherlands.

The rich past of Dordrecht is still visible when you walk past the old inner city harbors, monuments and museums of Dordrecht. Not to be missed are the Grote Kerk, the widely praised paintings collection of the Dordrechts Museum, the beautiful interiors of the old mayor's house 'Huis van Gijn' and the thirteenth-century Augustinian monastery 'Het Hof'. Another recommendation is the magnificent view of the crossing of rivers from the Groothoofd.

The name Dordrecht comes from Thuredriht (circa 1120), Thuredrecht (circa 1200). The name seems to mean 'thoroughfare'; a ship-canal or -river through which ships were pulled by rope from one river to another, as here from the Dubbel to the Merwede, or vice versa. Earlier etymologists had assumed that the 'drecht' suffix came from Latin 'trajectum', a ford, but this was rejected in 1996.[9] The Drecht is now supposed to have been derived from 'draeg', which means to pull, tow or drag. Inhabitants of Dordrecht are Dordtenaren (singular: Dordtenaar).
Dordrecht is informally called Dordt by its inhabitants. In earlier centuries, Dordrecht was a major trading port and was called Dort in English

The city was formed along the Thure river, in the midst of peat marshes. This river was a branch of the river Dubbel, which is part of the massive Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta complex, near the current Bagijnhof. Around 1120 reference to Dordrecht was made by a remark that count Dirk IV of Holland was murdered in 1049 near Thuredrech.
Dordrecht was granted city rights by William I, Count of Holland, in 1220, making it the oldest city in the present province of South Holland. In fact, Geertruidenberg was the first city in the historical county of Holland to receive city rights, but this municipality currently is part of the province of North Brabant.
In the 12th and 13th centuries, Dordrecht developed into an important market city because of its strategic location. It traded primarily in wine, wood and cereals. Dordrecht was made even more important when it was given staple right in 1299.
In 1253 a Latin school was founded in Dordrecht. It still exists today as the Johan de Witt Gymnasium [nl] and is the oldest gymnasium in the Netherlands. From 1600 to 1615 Gerhard Johann Vossius was rector at this school.
On 18–19 November 1421, the Saint Elisabeth's flood flooded large parts of southern Holland, causing Dordrecht to become an island. It was commonly said that over 10,000 people died in the flood, but recent research indicates that it was probably less than 200 people.[10]
On 29 June 1457, the city was devastated by a fire which started in Kleine Spuistraat, destroying many buildings, including the Grote Kerk

Tour The Beautiful Dutch City Of Dordrecht On This Picturesque Walking Tour Of Its City Center

Discover The Charming Dutch City Of Dordrecht On This Walking Tour Of Its Picturesque City Center!
Dordrecht, historically known in English as Dordt (still colloquially used in Dutch, pronounced or Dort, is a city and municipality in the Western Netherlands, located in the province of South Holland. It is the province's fifth-largest city after Rotterdam, The Hague, Zoetermeer and Leiden, with a population of 119,115.
Dordrecht is informally called Dordt by its inhabitants. In earlier centuries, Dordrecht was a major trading port and was called Dort in English.
In 1572, four years into the Dutch Revolt, representatives of all the cities of Holland, with the exception of Amsterdam, as well as the Watergeuzen, represented by William II de la Marck, gathered in Dordrecht to hold the Eerste Vrije Statenvergadering (First Assembly of the Free States), also known as the Unie van Dordrecht (Union of Dordrecht). This secret meeting, called by the city of Dordrecht, was a rebellious act since only King Philip II or his stadtholder, at that time the Duke of Alba, were allowed to call a meeting of the States of Holland.

During the meeting, the organization and financing of the rebellion against the Spanish occupation was discussed, Phillip II was unanimously denounced, and William of Orange was chosen as the rightful stadtholder and recognized as the official leader of the revolt. Orange, represented at the meeting by his assistant Philips of Marnix, was promised financial support of his struggle against the Spanish and at his own request, freedom of religion was declared in all of Holland.

The gathering is regarded as the first important step towards the free and independent Dutch Republic.
Other important gatherings such as the Union of Brussels (1577) and the Union of Utrecht (1579) paved the way for official independence of the Dutch Republic, declared in the Act of Abjuration in 1581.

The Union of Dordrecht was held in an Augustinian monastery, nowadays simply called het Hof (the Court). The room in which the meeting was held is called de Statenzaal (The Hall of States) and features a stained glass window in which the coats of arms of the twelve cities that were present at the meeting can be seen.

Throughout the centuries, Dordrecht held a key position in the defense of Holland. It hosted an army division well into the 20th century. During the mobilization of August 1939, infantry and artillery were sent to Dordrecht to defend the island. When the Germans invaded the Netherlands on 10 May 1940, German paratroopers landed in Dordrecht. After fierce fighting they overtook the bridges Dordrecht-Moerdijk and Dordrecht-Zwijndrecht. Many buildings in Dordrecht were destroyed. At the end of the Second World War, during the winter of 1944–45, Dordrecht and its surroundings were in the middle between the opposing armies. The border between occupied and liberated regions ran along the Hollands Diep. Dordrecht was finally liberated by the Canadian Army.

History!
In times of sea-borne storms, Dordrecht is threatened by high river-water levels. Because it lies on an island, the possibility of evacuating the city in the case of a breach in the dike is extremely limited. Dordrecht is therefore working on optimizing its multi-layered water safety strategy, in the form of the Self-Sufficient Island of Dordrecht. In addition to measures in layer 1 of the strategy, this particular geographic situation clearly requires measures from layers 2 and 3; these therefore also receive much attention. Dordrecht is a forerunner in this.

DORDRECHT CITY TRIP - THE OLDEST CITY IN HOLLAND - HISTORIC CENTRE TOURIST TOUR

Go with us on a city trip to Dordrecht, the oldest city in Holland! Beautiful hisotric buildings, diverse museums, a cosy city centre with numerous canals and old monuments and a great shopping area with lots of nice shops and good restaurants await you. Subscribe to our channel for more videos:

The city of Dordrecht, located in the province of South Holland, obtained city rights as early as 1220, making it the oldest city in Holland. Located in a wetland area with such rivers as the Merwede, Noord and Ouwe Maas, it was an important merchant city with a lively trade in wood, cereals and wine. That history, wealth and culture is still clearly visible. Not only does the historic city center of Dordrecht harbor around 1,000 monuments – they are also splendidly used as restaurants, museums and theatres.

There is some controversy concerning the etymology of its name, but it essentially means a “thoroughfare.” This is due to the fact that the city is actually on an island and was historically a significant part of the shipping lines in the earliest days of its existence. It is actually bordered by five different rivers and remains a culturally and historically important city. Known by its inhabitants as Dordt, the city was also called Dort by the English who valued it as a trade port.

Dordrecht’s rich history is still clearly visible when you walk past the old inner city harbors, monuments and museums of Dordrecht. Absolute must-sees are the Great Church (Grote Kerk), the renowned collection of paintings of the Dordrechts Museum, the gorgeous interior of the old mayor’s house ‘Huis van Gijn’ and the thirteenth-century Augustine monastery ‘Het Hof’. Also highly recommended is the gorgeous view of the rivers’ intersection from the Groothoofd. Dordrecht is best discovered on foot.

Today, the city of Dordrecht is the 6th largest seaport in the Netherlands, and is primarily known for shipbuilding and its wood and steel industry. While being the oldest city in Holland, Dordrecht is by no means feeling its age. The city is currently in the process of a huge revitalization project aimed at bringing more business services to the area.

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden. It has the most populous urban area in Sweden as well as in Scandinavia. 1 million people live in the municipality, approximately 1.6 million in the urban area, and 2.4 million in the metropolitan area. The city stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Outside the city to the east, and along the coast, is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. It is also the county seat of Stockholm County.

Dordrecht, Netherlands Walking tour [4K].

Dordrecht, Netherlands Walking tour 4K. September 24, 2022.
Dordrecht is located in the southeastern part of the province of South Holland, about 20 km southeast of Rotterdam. The city occupies the entire area of the island of the same name, which was formed in its modern form as a result of the flood of St. Elizabeth in 1421. Dordrecht received city privileges in 1220. Dordrecht is considered the oldest city in Holland.
Located at the crossroads of water trade routes, Dordrecht remained the most important and most influential city in Holland until the 16th century. In 1572 it became one of the first cities in the Netherlands to rebel against Spanish rule, and it was here that the Free Assembly of the United Provinces met for the first time. Starting from the 17th century, Dordrecht began to lose its leading positions in the Dutch economy and politics, yielding them to its northern neighbors, but remained an important shipbuilding and commercial center of the country. In the historical center of Dordrecht, which was almost not destroyed during the Second World War, many buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved. The city is crossed by numerous canals, the main one of which runs along the central shopping street of Dordrecht - Vorstraat. In the city center, at the intersection of Worstraat and Wiesstraat, a monument was erected to the brothers Jan and Cornelis de Witt, Republican politicians who were killed by the Orangists in The Hague in 1672. The Worstraat ends with the gates of the former city outpost of Grotshofdsport, built in 1618. Of the 12 fortress gates of Dordrecht, only two have survived - the second, Katreineport, was built in 1652. Next to the New Port is the Gothic Grote Kerk, built in the 14th century and remaining one of the largest churches in the Netherlands. There are a number of museums in the city, including the Dordrecht Museum, whose collection contains paintings by Dutch artists, mainly from the 17th century and later, including works by such authors as Jacob and Albert Cuyp, Jan van Goyen, Adam Willaerts, Ari Scheffer, Josef Israels and G. H. Breitner.

Delft, Netherlands 2023 / Walking Tour in Delft - The city centre- The Old Church tower

Delft is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. It is located between Rotterdam, to the southeast, and The Hague, to the northwest. Together with them, it is part of both the Rotterdam–The Hague metropolitan area and the Randstad.

Delft is a popular tourist destination in the Netherlands, famous for its historical connections with the reigning House of Orange-Nassau, for its blue pottery, for being home to the painter Jan Vermeer, and for hosting Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). Historically, Delft played a highly influential role in the Dutch Golden Age.
In terms of science and technology, thanks to the pioneering contributions of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek and Martinus Beijerinck, Delft can be considered to be the birthplace of microbiology.

The city centre retains a large number of monumental buildings, while in many streets there are canals of which the banks are connected by typical bridges, altogether making this city a notable tourist destination.

Historical buildings and other sights of interest include:

Oude Kerk (Old Church), constructed between 1246 and 1350. Buried here: Piet Hein, Johannes Vermeer, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.

Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), constructed between 1381 and 1496. It contains the Dutch royal family's burial vault which, between funerals, is sealed with a 5,000 kg (11,020 lb) cover stone.

A statue of Hugo Grotius created by Franciscus Leonardus Stracké [nl] in 1886, located on the Markt near the Nieuwe Kerk.

The Prinsenhof (Princes' Court), now a museum.
City Hall on the Markt.

The Oostpoort (Eastern gate), built around 1400. This is the only remaining gate of the old city walls.

The Gemeenlandshuis Delfland, or Huyterhuis, built in 1505, which has housed the Delfland regional water authority since 1645.

The Vermeer Centre in the re-built Guild house of St. Luke.

The historical Waag building (Weigh house).

Windmill De Roos, a tower mill built c.1760. Restored to working order in 2013.[14] Another windmill that formerly stood in Delft, Het Fortuyn, was dismantled in 1917 and re-erected at the Netherlands Open Air Museum, Arnhem, Gelderland in 1920.

People have been talking about the tower of the Old Church for centuries. 'Why is it so crooked?', 'Could it topple over?'. To answer those questions, we need to go back to 1325?
Diversion
The Old Church has always stood directly on the ‘Delf', the old word for ‘canal', which is what gave Delft its name. But that meant that when plans were made to build a tower on the church in 1325, there was nowhere to put it. It is probable that the canal was diverted and filled in. The canal is now known as the Oude Delft, but the diversion can still be seen on maps.

Crooked
And so the tower ended up partly built on top of a former canal. This turned out not to be a sound foundation for the heavy stones of the tower, which started to subside even as it was being built. Luckily, the builders managed to stabilise it for the time being, and then carried on building straight up. That is why there is a kink in the tower, clearly visible from a distance.

Public outcry
The crooked tower - often referred to as ‘Scheve Jan' or ‘Crooked John' - has now been fully stabilised. But for a long time, people in Delft lived in fear of its collapse. In 1843, the city council even wanted to knock it down. Following a public outcry, that plan luckily came to nothing. And so the tower of the Old Church still stands today: 75 metres high, and almost two metres off centre...

Delft City Hall on the Markt was designed by municipal architect Hendrick de Keyser (1565 -1621) in the 17th century after the old, medieval building burnt down in 1618. De Keyser was considered one of the best architects of his time. He left two architectural landmarks in Delft: the grave monument of Prince William of Orange at the Nieuwe Kerk and City Hall on the Markt. Even today Delft City Hall, which faces the Nieuwe Kerk, is one of the city’s most distinctive monuments.
