How To Spend A Day In Rotterdam | Netherland Series
Rotterdam is The Netherlands ’ second-biggest city. A typical city with buildings, history, food, and people.
But what makes Rotterdam special are its incredibly modern buildings. Because of the World War II bombing, a lot of Rotterdam had been demolished. But because of the Dutch resilience, engineering, and hard work, the Dutch were able to come back and rebuild their city and make it special. Now, cool and interesting buildings can be found all over the city.
Our first stop led us to the iconic Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen). This set of houses are one of this city’s most iconic attractions. Designed by Piet Blom, a Dutch architect, this residential development stands as homes that are literal cubes that are all tilted at 45 degrees. Originally the concept of the cube houses was conceived as a collection of “trees in a forest.” The angle of each cube joining together creates a conceptual forest. The hexagonal pillars symbolize the trunks of a tree and it all resembles a futuristic forest.
Following the Cube Houses, we made a quick walk across to Markthal, which is another architectural wonder. From the outside, you might think this is just a regular building with residential homes or office space and you wouldn’t be wrong. But once you walk in, massive, beautiful mural contours and follows the shape of the building. And inside this building is a big space filled with vendors that sell food, snacks, drinks, and more. Definitely a first of its kind, a building with housing and a market hall.
We rode our bikes across town to the historic Delfshaven where it was like stepping into a time machine. Like we mentioned before, Rotterdam had been rebuilt due to the World War II bombing, but this particular section of Rotterdam was spared. So there was no need to rebuild. Things here have relatively stayed the same. We visit the Pilgrim’s Fathers Church where we saw where the pilgrims first set sail for America and walked around the area to see the stark contrast between Delfshaven and the city of Rotterdam.
And the last stop on our tour of Rotterdam ended in the Luchtsingle Bridge or the Air Canal. Which is one of the first crowd-funded infrastructures ever built. It’s a yellow pedestrian bridge that links a few districts together so people could easily walkthrough. You can also see some of the boards with the names of the donors.

Excellent service. I was struggling to get a cab on new year's eve. Pre-booked the cab with speculation if the driver will come on time or not, as we have a small kid with us, and it's pretty late. The driver called 45 minutes before. He asked about our exact location and he was exactly on time. Highly suggest this taxi service in The Hague.

Uitstekende service. Het was lastig om een taxi te bestellen op oudejaarsavond. Ik reserveerde de taxi vooraf, maar wist niet zeker of de chauffeur op tijd zou komen of niet. We hebben een klein kind bij ons en het is vrij laat. Chauffeur belde 45 minuten eerder, vroeg naar onze exacte locatie en hij is precies op tijd.
