About Nouakchott: Nouakchott (/nwækˈʃɒt, nwɑː-/; French: nwakʃɔt; Arabic: نواكشوط; Berber: Nwakcoṭ, originally derived from Berber: Nawākšūṭ, place of the winds) is the capital and largest city of Mauritania. It is one of the largest cities in the Sahel. The city also serves as the administrative and economic center of Mauritania. Nouakchott was a mid-sized village of little importance until 1958 when it was chosen as the capital of the nascent nation of Mauritania. At the time, it was designed and built to accommodate 15,000 people. However, beginning in the 1970s, a vast number of Mauritanians began moving to Nouakchott because environmental conditions in their home villages had become too harsh due to drought and increasing desertification. As of 2013, the city had a population of just under a million people. Many of the newcomers settled in slum areas of the city that were poorly maintained and extremely overcrowded. However, more recently, the living conditions of some of these inhabitants have improved. The city is the hub of the Mauritanian economy. It is home to a deepwater port and Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport, one of the countrys two international airports. It also hosts the University of Nouakchott and several other more specialized institutions of higher learning. // Mauritania, officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (Arabic: الجمهورية الإسلامية الموريتانية), is a sovereign country in Northwest Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest. Mauritania is the 11th-largest country in Africa and the 28th-largest in the world, and 90% of its territory is situated in the Sahara. Most of its population of 4.4 million lives in the temperate south of the country, with roughly one-third concentrated in the capital and largest city, Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast. Discover MAURITANIA: Where FAT Is BEAUTIFUL | 10 Interesting Facts You DO NOT KNOW about Mauritania

At midnight on November 28, 1960, under a tent in Nouakchott, to which the capital was recently moved, the chosen president announces the independence of Mauritania from French colonialism in the presence of foreign press delegations and a number of French and African personalities. Since then, Mauritania is considered a link between the Arab and African worlds.

The word “Mauritania” was not used to refer to the geographical area currently known as “Mauritania.” As for the original name, it was “الشنقيط بالد/Bilad alshanqit” (In English: The land of alshanqit) and the inhabitants were called “الشناقطة /alshanaqita”, but France named the country “Mauritania” when it colonized it at the beginning of the last century.
I forgot to tell you why the words are in Arabic because the official language of the country is Arabic

The Mauritanian constitution stipulates the existence of four national languages, the first of which is Arabic (the official language of the country), along with the “Pularian” language, the “Millennium” language, and the “Sononic” language (African languages), but there is a fifth language that is not provided for in the constitution, which is the “Zanak” language (the Berber language), and this language is almost disappearing from the country.

The Parc National du Banc D’arguin, a UNESCO world heritage site. It is one of the largest bird sanctuaries and very popular amongst bird lovers all across the world. You can spot many migratory birds in the reserve. You can go birdwatching there. The Park comprises sand-dunes, coastal swamps, small islands, and shallow coastal waters. The contrast between the harsh desert

environment and the biodiversity of the marine zone has resulted in a land- and seascape of outstanding natural significance. A wide variety of migrating birds spends the winter there. Several species of sea turtle and dolphin, used by the fishermen to attract shoals of fish, can also be found.
9- “The Richat Structure”, an eye staring at you from space! It is a huge eye in the Mauritanian desert which is visible from space, and it ranks as one of the most incredible geological marvels of our world. Just imagine looking down on Earth from space and an eye is staring back at you. It is known that the diameter of this eye is around 40 km and it looks like a ‘bull’s eye’.

The exact reason for its creation is still unknown as while competing theories concerning its origins exist, the debate still rages among some scientists. Nature seems reluctant to yield its mysteries to mankind. Some evidence indicates that this astonishing Eye of the Sahara represents the remnants of a geologic dome that formed approximately 100 million years ago.

“Bay of Nouadhibou”, “The Graveyard of ships” The place where there are rusting hulks in every direction, and ships that were cheaper to illegally abandon in this harbor than to correctly dismantle.

The city of Nouadhibou is the second-largest city in Mauritania and serves as the country's commercial center. It is famous for being the location of one of the largest ship graveyards in the world. Hundreds of rusting ships can be seen all around, in the water, and on beaches.
Various historical records cite that the port city became a vessel graveyard during the late 20th century. However, the idea of using the peninsula as a ship graveyard predates back to the days of the
country’s French colonization during the 20s and peaked to substantial heights during the 80s.

In the past, there were several currencies circulating inside Mauritania. The Ouguiya is the only Arabic word among all the monetary conventions in Mauritania. All of the other terms are of European origin, so this authentic Arabic word was chosen as a name for the Mauritanian national currency.

You will learn in Mauritania to give more value and attention to the number five. Mauritania is one of only two countries in the world to not use a decimal currency! The other is Madagascar. The Ouguiya
is the currency of Mauritania. Each ouguiya constitutes five Khoums.
6- As a Mauritanian kid, we can expect now that you should now have a rooster’s farm dependent on the number of teeth you've replaced so far.
In Mauritania, when a child loses a tooth, their parents tell them to wrap up their tooth in a small piece of cloth and throw it as hard as they can onto the roof of their house. If they get up very early the next morning, they will find a rooster on the roof, and they can keep it. If they don't wake up early enough, they won't find the rooster.

The desert train is a colorful decorated train for tourists in Mauritania (West Africa). It takes you on a unique journey and combines nature, culture and adventure.
You can eat, sleep and sip the three traditional glasses of Mauritanian tea on the train. You can hop on the locomotive and sit on the driver's seat. You can even ask for a photostop.
In one week you visit the iron ore mine of Zouerate, camp at the foot of the impressive monolith Ben Amira, and see one of the longest trains on earth passing by (more than 2 km). The desert train itself has only two carriages and is probably one of the shortest trains in the world.
From October until May the desert train has weekly departures.

S2 EP-2 Chinguetti | Atar | Nouadhibou | Terjit | Mauritania Is Safe | Diama Border Crossing

We are getting many questions about Nouadhibou, Nouakchott, Atar, Chinguetti, Ouadane, Terjit, Diama Border Crossing, how is Western Desert or is Mauritania safe to travel? Also when riding a motorcycle in Mauritania how can you find gasoline?

When we were starting our Africa journey from Morocco, Western Africa we didn't have any experience about how to ride motorcycle, live in a tent, also we couldn't find so much info for Western Africa to make a plan. So, we decided to start our motorcycle journey of Africa and learn everything on the road like ride on the mud, sand, desert, set up the tent, is Africa safe or not, is it possible to travel to some locations, etc.

In the beginning, when we decided to do a trip around the world we only had enough money to get our driver license. After that we just had money to buy a basic motorcycle what was good for African roads and we could only afford a simple camera and cheap camping equipment

We know that we do not have great footage to make amazing videos to show you but we believe they are good enough to show you if Mauritania safe or not, how the roads look like, Mauritanian people behaviour, Mauritanian markets, how the desert cities look like, local Mauritania life, check points, border crossing. We would like to warn you about if you make photos and videos because some Mauritanian people don’t like to see a camera around and they can get angry. Especially if you want to make videos in the markets and dirty areas because unfortunately we could not say that Mauritanian markets are so clean.

We have been writing on our website since the start of our motorcycle journey. You and find all African border crossing and bribes info on the website. Also, you can read county to country about our Africa trip and route.

Our Mauritania journey started from Guerguerat, Western Sahara border to Nouadhibou. After that we wanted to pass the western desert all the way to Atar but we couldn't because our motorcycles were not strong enough to pass the Sahara desert. So we searched for Trans Mauritania by train but it was a very expensive option to put our motorcycles in the train and go to Atar. So, we decided to stuck the main road and go to Nouakchott our challenge was to find enough gasoline along the way, as in Mauritania there is not so much Gasoline to find. They only sell Diesel what is not for motorcycles.

After Atar we went to Chinguetti, Ouadane, Terjit from there we followed the road to Nouakchott and so on to the Diama Border in Mauritania for crossing Senegal.

If you have any plan to make the same road as we did feel free to ask any questions. And you should read our blog, website :)

Follow your dream, do not waste your time sitting at home!

The Mauritanian iron ore train is one of the longest and heaviest trains in the world. It runs from Zouerate, one of the biggest iron ore mines in the world, located in the heart of the Sahara, to Nouadhibou, on the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean. The complete journey is between 20 and 23 hours. It is cold at night, warm during the day, and dusty all the way.
