Malawi Travel Guide - Exploring Africa

Malawi Travel Guide - Exploring Africa

Malawi (Chichewa: Malaŵi) is a country in Africa, bordered by Mozambique to the south and east, Tanzania to the north, Zambia to the west. Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa, runs along most of its eastern border. It's often described as the Warm Heart of Africa, referring to the friendliness of the people.

Much of Malawi is plateau, often reaching to 1,000m (3,000 ft), and the temperature in these highlands is moderate, with the hottest period occurring during the autumn rainy season and the coolest and chilliest in winter. The hottest region in the country is the lower Shire River Valley well south of Blantyre. Temperatures along scenic Lake Malawi are generally warm, but with a cooling breeze, especially in the evenings. Winters (May till July) are dry. The rainy season begins in mid-October to early November and generally runs until March.

Malawi’s people are its greatest asset - friendly, welcoming, colourful and vibrant. It's impossible to visit and not become engaged with the people, but there are now opportunities to spend time in real villages (including staying overnight) for a first-hand experience of the cultures, traditions and daily life. This is an option pretty much everywhere in Malawi, and one well worth taking.

There’s also much to see of Malawi’s history, beginning with the pre-history remains of the Karonga district and the Stone Age rock paintings near Dedza. The Cultural & Museum Centre at Karonga is well worth a visit. Elsewhere, the colonial period is preserved in buildings dating from the David Livingstone era and the defeat of the Arab slave trade is well documented in the museums of Blantyre. Among other museums around the country are a Lake Museum at Mangochi, a mission museum at Livingstonia and a postal services museum near Zomba

Cities & Destinations of Malawi :

Lilongwe - the political capital of Malawi and seat of government

Blantyre - economic capital and largest city; Blantyre's a large and thriving city with an interesting downtown, decent nightlife and music, a range of hotels from the elegant to rest houses, and a vibrant street and market culture

Mzuzu - largest town in the Northern Region and a staging-post for transport to Tanzania

Karonga - quickly growing spurred on by the recent development of a uranium mine and a charming town, not far from the intriguing Misuku Hills and a short distance from Lake Malawi

Mangochi - medium-sized town, formerly known as Fort Johnston, at the southern end of Lake Malawi where it empties into the Shire River and a jumping-off point for the resorts and hostels up the coast of Lake Malawi, on the way to peninsular Cape Maclear
Monkey Bay - a popular large village as you head up the Lake Road from Mangochi toward Cape Maclear

Nkhata Bay - a rocky bay towards the north of the lake - check into one of the lodges and you could be here for a while.

Nkhotakota on the shores of Lake Malawi in the Central Region, is where the explorer David Livingston sat down with the Swahili Arab slave traders to attempt to negotiate an end to the slave trade. Nkhotakota was a slave entrepot, from which slaves were ferried across Lake Malawi to the eastern shore to resume their travel over land to what is now the Tanzanian coast. Nkhotakota is a compact and fascinating town, old in its way and true to the ethnic diversity of this region of Malawi. The place is renowned amongst the tourists for its unspoilt golden sandy beaches north of Nkhotakota. It is home to several small family-run resorts.

Zomba is the old colonial capital of Malawi and is noted for its British colonial architecture, the University of Malawi, and the remarkable Zomba Plateau which rises immediately west of the city.

Liwonde National Park (Malawi) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Vacation travel video about destination Liwonde National Park in Malawi.
The Liwonde National Park is situated in Central Africa and is Malawi’s most well known game reserve.Up until 1962 unrestricted poaching and hunting almost entirely eradicated the wildlife population of the region but in 1969 it was designated as a game reserve and, in 1973, as a national park. The Shire River is the region’s lifeline and more than two thousand hippos inhabit a forty kilometre section of the park. The park’s elephants are no longer slaughtered for their valuable tusks and their numbers, too, are increasing substantially. At the park’s watering holes groups of animals repeatedly gather to drink, an ideal opportunity to observe animals in the wild. Thankfully, the Liwonde National Park is now a natural paradise once more.

Africa The Media Doesn’t Show You! | Zomba, Malawi ????????

Zomba? Where the f**k is Zomba? I hear you say ...

It’s a crumbling colonial village in southern Malawi that’s barely on the maps and a long way from anything resembling a tourist trail. There’s a couple of nice waterfalls nearby to hike up and that’s pretty much it, so Zomba won’t be replacing Paris and San Francisco on lists of the world’s greatest cities anytime soon.

The town is bustling but feels safe, and provides a good look at genuine African life and the closest thing to a tourist attraction in Zomba is the Zomba Plateau that stands high above it, so I found something that almost looked like a track and headed straight up to the waterfalls. It was very slippy, but by the time I got to the top the view was phenomenal; surprisingly green, with mountains that reach for the sky.

Enjoy this little adventure in Zomba, Malawi ...

A day visit to Sunbird Ku Chawe and Mulunguzi Dam at Zomba Mountain in Malawi

Sunbird Ku Chawe is Malawi's premier mountain resort and one of the very best places from which to enjoy the splendor of a magnificent scenic country. The hotel sits on the edge of Zomba Plateau, which rises to nearly 2200m, (7000ft), with the highest peaks on the rim forming a saucer shaped bowl. Around this rim are some of the most stunning views in Africa. The resort is a 90 minute drive from Chileka International Airport in Blantyre, Malawi.

Malawi, our road trip Zomba plateau | J&B Road trip

Zomba plateau is part of our trip to Malawi. Our trip has started in capital city Lilongwe. After shopping we continued to Zomba plateau.
Zomba is a forest reserve and a popular tourist area.
Zomba Forest Reserve was founded in 1913, unfortunately today we can see only small parts of the original mountain forest.
Why? You will see that in our film.

Proč, to můžete vidět v našem filmu.

King African Rifles Monument in Zomba, Malawi

An imposing red-brick monument, King African Rifles Monument, stands as a memorial to Malawi’s soldiers who fought during WWI and WWII. Climb the stairs leading to the monument on the small hill and learn more about the battalion’s bravery, which was displayed on battlefronts around the world. The lush vegetation and trees in the surrounding park create a soothing ambiance, making this a great place to sit and contemplate in peace. Take the guesswork out of planning a Zomba vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

Driving through Zomba, the former capital of Malawi, it is impossible to miss the towering brick monument dedicated to those who served in the King’s African Rifles. Ornate and proud, it celebrates the victories and sacrifices of the many Malawians who served, not just in Africa, but around the world.
In 1902, all British military forces in East and Central Africa were consolidated and renamed the King’s African Rifles. Nyasaland’s battalions, the First and Second, which had already been in service for over fourteen years, became the senior regiments within the newly formed King’s African Rifles.

Zomba Massif | Mountain In Malawi | Rivers and warerfall

Zomba Massif, isolated mass of syenite rising from the Shire Highlands, southern Malawi. It occupies an area of about 50 square miles (130 square km) and reaches an elevation of 6,846 feet (2,087 metres) in Zomba Peak. Sheer scarps to the east and south drop 2,500 feet (750 metres) to the surrounding plains, and the western wall (4,000 feet [1,200 metres]) bounds part of the Shire rift valley. The massif is divided by the deep valley of the Domasi River into two sections—the Zomba Plateau (south) and Malosa Mountain (north). The tabular surface at 6,000 feet (1,830 metres) is under softwood afforestation as well as development as a mountain resort

Malawi’s MAGICAL Chilema Tree in Malosa, Zomba. A single tree continuing for 200 metres! #malawi

One of Malawi’s natural wonders is the Chilema Tree located at Malosa about 27km before Zomba town. Malosa is a Chiyao word and Chilema a Chichewa word. Chilema means “disabled” (so the disabled tree) and Malosa (malodza in Chichewa) means “something abnormal/mysterious.”

What appears to be an area that traditionally would resemble a graveyard or a small forest is actually all one winding and continuous tree. The tree extends for up to 200 metres! Our guide told us that although others have tried to plant it elsewhere, the properties of the tree have never been replicated elsewhere in Malawi.

Anglican missionaries settled in the area in the 1960s and the tree now resides on a mission campus who are its primary caretakers (CCAP Blantyre Synod & the Anglican Diocese of Malawi). The area contains the Likwenu Primary School, Malosa Secondary School and St. Luke’s Hospital. The tree itself is just next to the Chilema Eccumenical Training and Conference Centre (CETCC). The buildings here are beautiful and also worth appreciating and learning more about.

A small stream that is ever-flowing from the mountain is visible all around the tree and we heard stories of its healing powers and powerful properties. It’s also said if pregnant women cook nsima using firewood from the tree their labor will begin. Traditional healers have also tried to harvest pieces of the bark although this has been discouraged since it could harm the tree.

Current fees are 500 MK for Malawians and 3,000 MK for international visitors which includes a guide. It is important to pay these fees as part of the support system for Malawi tourism and upkeep of the area.

So next time you are near Zomba make sure you don’t pass here without stopping by!
