Leiden- Top 10 Things to See & Do

New Amsterdam Travel Tip Video: Leiden has it all- history, art, beauty. And it's only about a half-hour train ride from Amsterdam by train. It is the birthplace of Rembrandt and the home of the British Pilgrims in the 1600s. Explore a castle-like citadel on top of a hill in the middle of the city center and walk through arched gateways and cross over canals on narrow bridges. And Leiden is also a modern city with lively cafes, restaurants which are filled with university students. It's another great daytrip if you want to discover more places in the Netherlands beyond Amsterdam.

Driving through Sweet Leek City, Zoetermeer | The Netherlands | #NetherlandsDiary

Welcome to my channel.

This video about Zoetermeer.
Subscribe for more video's.

In the tenth century Zoetermeer was a small village primarily home to farmers and fishermen. In the 13th century a village center was formed, which still exists as the historic Dorpsstraat. Until the 17th century there was a lake called the Zoetermeer. A reminder of this is the Zoetermeerse Plas in the Noord Aa recreation area at the northern edge of town; this artificial lake was created when tons of sand were needed to lay the foundation for new housing development, and the area north of Zoetermeer was a good source of this resource.
Until 1935 the village centre was split into two villages, Zoetermeer and Zegwaard. The standard of living at the time was said to be higher in Zoetermeer than in Zegwaard[citation needed]. Seghwaert, an older way of spelling of Zegwaard, is now the name of a neighbourhood outside the old village centre.

The Netherlands , informally Holland, is a country located in Western Europe with overseas territories in the Caribbean. It is the largest of four constituent countries of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In Europe, the Netherlands consists of twelve provinces, bordering Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, and the North Sea to the northwest, with maritime borders in the North Sea with those countries and the United Kingdom.[20] In the Caribbean, it consists of the three constituent countries Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten, together forming the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Further special municipalities: the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.[i] The country's official language is Dutch, with West Frisian as a secondary official language in the province of Friesland, and English and Papiamento as secondary official languages in the Caribbean Netherlands. Dutch Low Saxon and Limburgish are recognised regional languages (spoken in the east and southeast respectively), while Dutch Sign Language, Sinte Romani, and Yiddish are recognised non-territorial languages.

The four largest cities in the Netherlands are Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht.Amsterdam is the country's most populous city and nominal capital,[23] while The Hague holds the seat of the States General, Cabinet and Supreme Court. The Port of Rotterdam is the busiest seaport in Europe. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the busiest airport in the Netherlands, and the third busiest in Europe. The country is a founding member of the European Union, Eurozone, G10, NATO, OECD, and WTO, as well as a part of the Schengen Area and the trilateral Benelux Union. It hosts several intergovernmental organisations and international courts, many of which are centred in The Hague, which is consequently dubbed 'the world's legal capital'.

Netherlands literally means lower countries in reference to its low elevation and flat topography, with only about 50% of its land exceeding 1 m (3.3 ft) above sea level, and nearly 26% falling below sea level. Most of the areas below sea level, known as polders, are the result of land reclamation that began in the 14th century. Colloquially or informally the Netherlands is occasionally referred to by the pars pro toto Holland. In the Republican period, which began in 1588, the Netherlands entered a unique era of political, economic, and cultural greatness, ranked among the most powerful and influential in Europe and the world; this period is known as the Dutch Golden Age.During this time, its trading companies, the Dutch East India Company and the Dutch West India Company, established colonies and trading posts all over the world.

With a population of 17.6 million people, all living within a total area of roughly 41,800 km2 (16,100 sq mi)—of which the land area is 33,500 km2 (12,900 sq mi)—the Netherlands is the 16th most densely populated country in the world and the second-most densely populated country in the European Union, with a density of 526 people per square kilometre (1,360 people/sq mi). Nevertheless, it is the world's second-largest exporter of food and agricultural products by value, owing to its fertile soil, mild climate, intensive agriculture, and inventiveness.
The Netherlands has been a parliamentary constitutional monarchy with a unitary structure since 1848. The country has a tradition of pillarisation and a long record of social tolerance, having legalised abortion, prostitution and human euthanasia, along with maintaining a liberal drug policy. The Netherlands abolished the death penalty in Civil Law in 1870, though it was not completely removed until a new constitution was approved in 1983. The Netherlands allowed women's suffrage in 1919, before becoming the world's first country to legalise same-sex marriage in 2001. Its mixed-market advanced economy had the eleventh-highest per capita income globally. The Netherlands ranks among the highest in international indices of press freedom, economic freedom, human development and quality of life, as well as happiness. In 2020, it ranked eighth on the human development index and fifth on the 2021 World Happiness Index.

See the EXTREME BEAUTY of THE NETHERLANDS! (in just one day)

The Netherlands is a BEAUTIFUL country, but instead of reading about it below - just watch the video! We do our best to show you the highlights from our 5+ weeks in The Low Country. For those of you who want to make this a little more fun, here’s a pop quiz for you:

1) What is adventureViV’s secret tip for Amsterdam?
2) How old was adventureViV when she learned how to ride a bicycle?
3) What is the symbol of the Staverden Estate?
4) Where is the 103 bus going in Madurodam?
5) Which shipping company does the creeper in Rotterdam work for?

*Answer in the comments below for a custom adventureViV postcard!*

Groningen: Groningen is a charming student city in the Northern Netherlands and the perfect base for visiting the Netherlands’ barrier islands.

Schiermonnikoog: Due to the influence of the tides and its location between the Wadden Sea and the North Sea, the island has a climate that is different from that of the mainland. Schiermonnikoog is characterized by diverse landscapes including beaches, dunes, forests, tidal marshes, lakes and tidal flats.

Amsterdam: Visit the world-famous 17th century capital of Holland. Go for a boat tour on the canals, and stroll through Vondelpark. Amsterdam’s oldest houses, are a national treasure. Many of these stunning examples of architecture, found around the city’s Canal Ring, date back to the Dutch Golden Age when a building tax was calculated by the width of a property’s façade.

Dokkum: You don't even have to close your eyes to feel like you've gone back a few centuries!

Burum: In this tiny town, you will find Windlust, a smock mill which was officially reopened in 2014 on Nationale Molendag - yes, the Dutch celebrate a National Mills Day.

Naarden: Naarden is an example of a Spanish star fort, complete with fortified walls and a moat.

Staverden: Staverden received its city rights in 1298 from the German King Rudolph but has never really become a true city. Staverden is officially the smallest city in the Netherlands.

The Hague: The Hague is the heart of Dutch politics where you will find beautiful museums filled with Dutch masterpieces. Visit the historic Binnenhof, or admire Vermeer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring' at the Mauritshuis. Our favorites include Mesdag’s Panorama and Escher in het Paleis.

Madurodam: Visit Madurodam and discover all of Holland in a few hours. Ever since the opening in 1952 Madurodam has been one of the most iconic places in the Netherlands.
Muiderslot: The Muiderslot Castle is one of Holland’s most picturesque medieval castles.

Scheveningen: Let’s go to the beach! The Pier is one of the most notable icons in Scheveningen. Nearly 400 metres long and 45 metres high, it runs straight into the North Sea and offers a beautiful view of the village. *Video correction: the sun is setting over the North Sea (not the Atlantic!)*

Leiden: Leiden is a picturesque university city with many canals, ‘hofjes’ and museums. Leiden also has its own Hortus Botanicus, an impressive university garden filled with plants from around the world.

Rotterdam: Rotterdam is a city of many faces: a tough port city, a trendy modern city, and a hip artistic city. Check out the Maritime Museum when in Rotterdam to learn about Rotterdam’s role as a port city. Don’t miss a walk over the Erasmus Bridge. At its highest point, the Erasmus bridge is 139-meters tall. Known as the 'Erasmusbrug' in Dutch, the bridge has also been lovingly nicknamed The Swan (‘De Zwaan’) by locals due to the distinctive shape of that one, asymmetrical pylon.

Zoetermeer: It’s got everything you need! Zoetermeer was our homebase for our entire stay in the Netherlands - thanks to our wonderful hosts! We miss our daily trips to Albert Heijn in the Meerzicht with Miss Moneypenny. We’ll be back soon!

NEXT TIME: Catch us chasing summer in Portugal!

Newsreel from 1973 about the 'fastest growing municipality of our country'

Topographic map of Zoetermeer, 2014
Zoetermeer began to grow slightly when the first train service came around 1868. A few decades later the Numico factory started near the station. The real growth started in 1966, when there was an urgent need of houses from people around The Hague. From then they started to build new quarters around the old village centre, so Zoetermeer began to grow and became a city in the meantime.
Although contemporary Zoetermeer has the image of a modern city, there are still remains of the past. Like the old village centre with its small houses and the church with late medieval 15th-century clock tower (on picture, wooden top from 1642), and the old farms, surrounded by modern houses nowadays.
Lake Dobbe divides the old town from the new city centre, with the medieval village centre on one side of the lake and the modern high-rise and skyscrapers on the other side.

Netherlands | Visiting Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Eindhoven - Country #49 to Visit All Countries

In this video, you'll see and see my adventures in the Netherlands which is my country #49 in my quest to visit all 193 UN-recognized countries around the world. During my time in the Netherlands, I was visiting my Dutch friends whom I met while backpacking in South Africa and Malaysia. My first set of friends is a Dutch couple living in Rotterdam who I met in Gansbaai in South Africa. I ended staying over at their place for a few nights. I cooked some Asian food for them and they showed me around the Port of Rotterdam, Kinderdijk Windmills, the Hague, and we also ate tons of delicious local Dutch foods. My next set of friends is another couple who I met in South Africa while travelling in Drakensberg. This couple lived in Amsterdam where I got a chance to cook some Asian food and we caught up and shared some travel stories. I also joined a city walking tour of Amsterdam which is probably the best city walking tour I have ever joined. My last friend that I visited is a girl who lives in Eindhoven who my girlfriend and I met while backpacking in Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia. She showed me around Eindhoven and then we hang out at her family's house where I met her sister and her dog. Overall, the Netherlands has really nice people and the Dutch are probably in my top 3 favourite European people.
