Zhoukou City, known as Longdu in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Henan Province, located in the southeastern part of Henan Province, in the hinterland of the Yellow-Huai Plain, east of Fuyang City, Anhui Province, west of Luohe City and Xuchang City, south of Zhumadian City, and north of Kaifeng City and Shangqiu City. 1965, Zhoukou Special Zone (later changed to Zhoukou District) was established; in 2000, the State Council approved the abolition of Zhoukou District to establish Zhoukou City. As of June 2020, Zhoukou City has 2 districts, 7 counties and 1 county-level city under its jurisdiction, with a total area of 11,959 square kilometers; the resident population is 9,026,015,000.
Zhoukou City is well-connected, with roads, railroads and waterways intertwined into a network, forming a large transportation pattern with a trinity of roads, railroads and waterways. The Sha Ying River has been a navigable river since ancient times, with two major cargo terminals built at Zhoukou and Liuwan, which enter the Huai River and converge with the Yangtze River. The Sha Ying River can reach Nanjing, Shanghai and Hangzhou directly. Zhoukou is the former capital of Fuxi, the hometown of Laozi, and has the reputation of being the pioneer of China and the sacred site of Kyushu, and is regarded as the birthplace of Chinese culture by the National Fuxi Culture Research Association.
On January 22, 2020, Zhoukou City was named a National Garden City by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. On May 18, 2020, Zhoukou was awarded the title of Civilized City of Henan Province and on October 20, 2020, Zhoukou was selected as one of the National Model Cities of Double Support.
