Zharkent 4K UHD - City on the border with China - Driving Downtown - Cities of Kazakhstan

Zharkent - the center of the Panfilov region of the Zhetysu region, was officially founded in 1882 by General Kuropatkin as an outpost to determine the borders of the then Russian Empire. It is located 200 km east of the Saryozek railway station, 29 km from the Chinese border. The city of Zharkent is one of the historical ancient cities not only of the Republic of Kazakhstan, but also of the post-Soviet space. It is known as the city through which the Great Silk Road passed, as a city of trade and handicraft people. Merchants' houses are still preserved in Zharkent, and the bazaar located in the center of the city also flourished. Immersed in gardens, flower beds, having unique cultural monuments and the famous wooden Zharkent Mosque, built without a single nail in 1895 according to the design of the Chinese architect Hong Pike.

Zharkent is one of the gates of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Almaty and other cities pass through it, which is a link with the region, and also the Kazakhstan section of the international transport corridor Western Europe - Western China originates here.

Now Zharkent has become a simple regional center, and earlier it was one of the largest cities in Kazakhstan. It is only a three-hour drive along the Almaty-Khorgos highway. Its name translates as city on a cliff, although that very cliff is long gone. Already in the 10th century, this place became a famous transit point on the Great Silk Road, and fierce battles were fought here between the Kazakhs and the Dzungars.

The capital is Astana (formerly Nur-Sultan, Aqmola, and Tselinograd), in the north-central part of the country.

Travel to Kazakhstan with Japanese friends (Part 1)

I traveled to Kazakhstan together with Japanese friends between Sept 15-21. We took a direct flight connecting Narita and Nursultan and took a local flight to Almaty. In Almaty region, we joined my Kazakh friend and a professional tour guide who took us to a ranch owned by our mutual friend (100 km west from Almaty) where I stayed with Japanese horse riders 6 months earlier this year, Charyn Grand Canyon, Kaindy and Kolsai Lakes, Zharkent near the Chinese border, Singing Dunes at Altyn Emel National Park, as well as Almaty City and surrounding tourist attractions such as Big Almaty Lake. We utilized our transit time (5-6 hours) in Nursultan to explore the capital city on Sept 15 and 21.

First Thoughts on Kazakhstan (not what we expected)

Wow this was not where we expected to be today - in central Asia in the 9th largest country in the world - Kazakhstan.

Our journey begun at the Munich airport in Germany as we started a long travel day to the stans, a layover in Minsk, Belarus until we finally arrived in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Even though we arrived at 5am - we wanted to go out and explore so we joined our small group and headed out to our village for the night - Kalinino Basshi village.

There we went out to the Singing Dunes in the Altyn Emel National Park. The next day we further explored the national park - seeing the Turtle mountains - which felt like being on Mars.

After we tried some local Kazakhstan food for lunch we continued our journey onto Zharkent - where we saw the Zharkent Mosque - which is so unique and rare due to it's Chinese/Islamic influence.

We then ended our day in a hot spring that was way to hot for us...wow not what we expected our first few hours in this incredible country to entail.

Denis Ten memorial in Almaty, Kazakhstan ????????

Day 7 in Southern Kazakhstan. After returning back from the Hot Springs and Zharkent. What was supposed to be a private tour of the ancient wild apple forest of Kazakhstan was cancel due to unexpected snow fall. This made me very disappointed since I'm a hard cider and mead connoisseur. I love making hard cider and it would be an amazing educational experience of visiting he origins of all apple species.
To make up for this change in the schedule we explored a little bit more of Almaty. Since we don't have many days in Almaty. On the search of former soviet relics!

P:S

I was very moved on accidently observing Denis Ten memorial in Almaty. It's very upsetting when someone has their life taken so short. Especially when you have worked extra hard to achieve success in life. You will be remembered Denis Ten.

If you ever visit Mongol Bar , tell Demitri I said Hello. He knows very little English and he is eager to learn. Very great guy to talk with and his Russian isn't complicated to understand

Magical Healing Tree of Auliyeagash, Kazakhstan????????

Day 4 of the Southern Kazakhstan trip. This adventure will be exploring the local famous healing tree of the Zharkent area of Kazakhstan. Now I say locally famous but this location doesn’t get a lot of tourists from anywhere except perhaps the neighboring countries. I talked to the Grand Care taker of this holy site and she told me they’re in the process of becoming an UNESCO heritage site for Kazakhstan. so if you happen to be heading to Zharkent city take a detour to visit the Holy Elm Tree of Auliyeagash. Don’t be shy in talking to the local caretakers and Please donate also! Tell them Eden says hello!

Important info Auliyeagash, a village about 17 miles from Zharkent, is home to Kieli Agash, a holy tree (“Agash” means “tree” in Kazakh) rumored to be at least 700 years old. The number seven is key to the tree’s power. You may hear that the tree is 700 years old, that it sprang from seven roots, and that it takes seven people joining hands to encircle the tree. Also heard many other folklore behind the tree creation.

After, visiting the tree we made our way to Zharkent city. The closest South Eastern city to the Chinese border. The Zharkent mosque dates to around 1886, not long after the town was officially settle. Zharkent was a small Uighur settlement prior to official Russian town and you will still find many Uighur people living here today. The Mosque is famously known to be built with no nails or screws.
