MUST SEE SIGHTs of CHINA for your FIRST VISIT! (Top 10)

These are my TOP 10 MUST SEE SIGHTS and HIDDEN GEMS that we saw during our 5 weeks in China. From busy cities to cute hipster towns. Natural wonders to man made gems. China really has everything need to make it your next favourite travel destination: this is your China travel inspiration!

In this video, we look at the best places to visit and some of the most useful China travel advice for your first visit: including train travel, how to access the internet through a VPN and how to deal with culture shock.

EVERY PLACE FEATURED IN THE VIDEO (in alphabetical order).

BEST VPN FOR CHINA: To access any western social media platforms in China, you're going to need a VPN. Ivacy offers a great VPN for a very affordable price (ad):

APPS TO DOWNLOAD
I should really have mentioned this in the video. Before your trip, make sure you download WeChat (it's free) for scanning things in shops and restaurants for translation. Didi is also a good one, it's the Chinese Uber!

BEIJING
The capital of China is a big, busy city but it's little hutongs are a lot of fun to explore. The Summer Palace and the Forbidden City are both really worth seeing as well.

CHAKA SALT LAKE -
A lesser visited gem, located about 4 hours away from the city of Xining in Qinghai province. Famous for it's mirror-like reflections of the sky.

CULTURE SHOCK
I received a lot of comments saying that people had some reservations and fears about visiting China. To be honest, I felt the same way before I went.

DALI -
An ancient city in Yunnan province that has a little bit of everything that I love! There's nature on the shores of Erhai Lake and up in the heights of Canshan Mountain. The stunning Three Pagodas temple and the bustling culture of the ancient city.

GREAT WALL OF CHINA -
Requires no introduction. But I really recommend exploring the wilder and more remote areas of the wall, rather than the touristy sections. In this film I looked at 3 different areas and compared the strengths and weaknesses of each.

HONG KONG -
A giant, sprawling city. Which also has some amazing natural spots like Lantau Island and Kowloon Park, That's what I focussed on in my travel film.

KUNMING -
Kunming has a reputation for being a transport hub, but it's actually a really fun city to spend a few days. The Dragon Gate and Green Lake Park are particularly great and are the main focus of my travel guide linked above.

LIJIANG OLD TOWN -
A beautiful ancient town with stunning maze like streets. It rained most of the time we were there, so I went searching for the little hidden gems of the streets.

RAINBOW MOUNTAINS -
This was the best day that I had in China. Away from the Danxia Landform Geopark is a peaceful national park that is so worth exploring. It feels more like Australia or the US than China.

SHANGHAI -
The last stop that we had in China. You can get some amazing views from the World Financial Centre Viewpoint.

TRAIN TRAVEL IN CHINA
The main way we got around China. We booked everything through China Highlights, which made thinks very easy (not sponsored, just good):

VPN (virtual private network)
You need a VPN to access almost every western social media accounts in China. For an affordable, but good VPN use Ivacy (ad):

XIAN -
I spent 24 hours exploring Xian and it definitely wasn't enough time. The Terracotta Warriors are amazing, but my film focusses on the other gems of the city.

XINGPING -
Home to the best view in China: Laozhai Mountain.

YANGSHUO -
Beautiful karst mountains, rivers and hiking. My video guide features everything we did there and it's a pretty extensive list! Including instructions on how to get to the best viewpoint in the area.

China's Landscapes & National Parks - Nature Travel Documentary

China is one of the largest countries in the world, with some of the most diverse landscapes, national parks, and natural scenery. From empty, arid desert landscapes to tranquil forests and beautiful lakes, and from spectacular mountain ranges to powerful rivers.

In this travel documentary, I take you on a journey through some of China’s most captivating landscapes and scenic regions. From the bizarre rock formations of Huangshan and Zhangjiajie national parks to the blue turquoise waters of Jiuzhaigou. From the picturesque mountains and hills around Yangshuo to the impressive Hukou waterfall. From the frozen lakes and mountain peaks of Tibet to the beautiful ‘Rainbow Mountains’ of Zhangye Danxia. From the Yuanyang rice terraces to the mysterious Earth and Stone Forests in Yunnan province. And from the mighty Yangtze River traversing China to the empty deserts of Gansu.

I traveled through China independently for more than a decade, on several occasions. The footage in this video was shot between 2010 and 2019, and is accompanied by relaxing music and background information.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin this tour in Zhangjiajie, one of China’s most recognizable and iconic national parks. It’s highly popular for its surreal pillar like rock formations, and was the inspiration for many Chinese painters and artists, and later also the directors of the movie Avatar. Getting around the park is part of the experience, with elevators, glass bridges, and walkways cutting right through the mountains.

Jiuzhaigou is known for its blue turquoise lakes and waterfalls, and is immensely popular with tourists well. The contrast with the next destination, Dunhuang, could not be bigger. This arid desert boasts tall sand dunes, and has seen many traders and explorers travel through its inhospitable landscape over the centuries.

We travel onwards to Yangshuo, a small town located in an otherworldly panorama of limestone hills and mountains. Cycling or paddling past these imposing peaks is a once in a lifetime experience. The next destination is the Yangtze river, which traverses China for 6,300 kilometers. Along the way, it meets breathtaking mountain scenery, hundreds of tributaries, and some of China’s largest cities. Here, we also briefly look at the environmental impact on the river, caused by dams, water diversion, and pollution.

From the raging waters in the narrow Tiger Leaping Gorge, we arrive at the beautiful Yuanyang rice terraces. This rural landscape gives a good insight into village life and agriculture, and provides stunning vistas. From here, we reach the peculiar Shilin Stone Forest.

We continue our journey in Western China, to visit the high altitude Karakul lake. After spending the night in a traditional Central Asian yurt, we travel to Tibet, a highly spiritual region that captures the imagination of many travelers. It’s filled with captivating nature, including mountains, rivers, lakes, and glaciers.

After briefly showing the Hukou waterfall, we climb the stark mountains of Yulong, after which we arrive in the surreal Earth forest of Yuanmou, and the Zhangye Rainbow Mountains. Finally, we finish our travels in Huangshan, the Yellow Mountain, one of China’s most popular national parks.

Getting the train from Xining to Zhangye - 0:57
The views from the train onto the Chinese countryside was pretty spectacular.

Hiring a private car for the day - 1:17
We met some other travellers in our hostel and decided to share a private car and driver to take us around for the day. This was also good as we had our big backpacks with us!

Exploring Danxia National GeoPark - 1:33
Looking around the more peaceful side of the park, which looks a lot like the national parks of Australia or the US. There are buses that you can get all around the park.

Visiting the Rainbow Mountains at Sunset - 3:07
Exploring the many boardwalks of the Danxia Landform GeoPark. The views are pretty spectacular, but you need to go and find the quieter spots.

China, Colourful mountains of the Zhangye Danxia Geopark, 12K aerial 360 video

Don't forget that this is 360 video: you can change the angle of view.
China has such a unique landform that there is a special word for it — Danxia. It refers to various landscapes that consist of red sandstone characterized by steep colourful cliffs.

If you enjoyed this video please like, share, comment, favorite, subscribe:
We regularly publish new 360 videos of the most beautiful places on our planet!

360° photos and videos, stories of our shootings, articles and FAQ you can find on our website:

Nowadays you need extraordinary computer power for watching 8K 360° videos. If you have troubles with watching such videos, choose 4K or HD quality in the settings of your YouTube player. We hope that YouTube will find a solution for optimization this videoformat to make it watchable for common users.

Also here is the answer for a frequently asked question about true resolution of an 8K 360° video. Unlike standard videos, in a 360° video you can see only a part of original image (approximately 30 degrees out of 360). As result, the real resolution of the part you can see isn't bigger than 1.3K.

YouTube does not support 12K 360 video yet, so the video was down-sampled from 12K to 8K. But still you need an extraordinary computer power for watching 8K 360° videos.

China Rainbow Mountains Travel and Visit Best Landscape

China’s Rainbow Mountains are amazing! Based in the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park it is basically the Chinese version of the Grand Canyon although maybe a slightly psychedelic one. These mountains were formed when a mixture of different coloured sandstone and minerals landed on each other over approximately 24 million years. The rock was then moved, shaken and squeezed by the earth’s tectonic plates (which also led to the creation of The Himalayas) before being carved by the wind and rain.

Rainbow Mountains China | UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Rainbow Mountains of China within the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park are a geological wonder of the world. These famous Chinese mountains are known for their otherworldly colors that mimic a rainbow painted over the tops of rolling mountains.

This is just one example where geology catches our attention and begs the question: What causes the Rainbow Mountains to be colored the way they are? Here I will discuss the diagenetic and mineralogical processes that make up the reds, greens, yellows, and blues.

Rainbow Mountains Zhangye Danxia (China) – most colorful places on Earth

Gansu Province in China is known as home to the eye candy of Zhangye – an incredible lunar-like landscape, which amazes thousands of visitors with its multitude of red, orange and yellow-hued colors. Many visitors and tourists compare Zhangye Danxia Landform to an artwork, created by the master, who spared no colors. In this case the master is Mother Nature.

Geological evidence shows that the Zhangye's Danxia landscape took years to form, as the erosion gradually gnawed at red sandstone, resulting in the formation of isolated peaks and steep outcrops.

The erosion, alongside the desert conditions and freeze-thaw peeling created unusually colorful appearance of the Zhangye Danxia landscape (no wonder that in some tourist guides they are mentioned as the Chinese Rainbow Mountains). See more about this unique tourism destination (fair use footage):

All in all, the Gansu Province in China is one of the best places to visit, if you would like to experience the true explosion of natural color.

Other cool flamboyant places of the world may be found here:
In our interactive video presentation we have also briefly reviewed such places:

- Marble Caves, Chile;

- Glass Beach, California, USA;

- Fly Geyser in Black Rock Desert, Nevada;

- glowing beaches on Rangali Island, Maldives;

- and many more in the full video.

Please leave your thoughts about most colorful places on Earth.

Top Things to See in China | A Guide to The Best Tourist Attractions in China

Top Things to do in China!
I know that this is long overdue and that I haven't posted a video in a while, but seriously China!! Anyways, this list is less about the top attractions in China and more about the best ones. Moreover, it features the off the beaten path destinations in China as well. So what are the most incredible things to do in China. Here's my take:

10) Changsha and the Mao Zedong Staute (长沙和毛泽东雕像)
This is crazy, in the capital of Hunan Province there's a giant statue of Mao Zedong that looks like something out of Mount Rushmore. Definitely a top thing to see in China.

9) Bifengxia Panda Base (碧峰峡大熊猫保护区)
The Panda Center in Chengdu is a bit over-touristed. That's why it's a great option to head to Bifengxia on the edge of the village of Ya'an, and up to this amazing place to visit in China.

8) Dunhuang Oasis (敦煌绿洲)
Up in Gansu Province there are a lot of amazing places to see! The Dunhuang Desert Oasis is an extension of the Gobi and is unreal!

7) The Westernmost Section of the Great Wall of China in Jiayuguan (对中国的嘉峪关长城的最西端科)
Sure, most people travel China specifically to see the Great Wall. Most head to Beijing. If you want an off-the-beaten-path option than Jiayuguan is perfect.

6) Yangshuo (阳朔)
In Guanxi Province Yangshuo is awesome. Limestone karst landscapes and beautiful river scenes make this an easy addition to the top things to see in China.

5) Mati Si and the Cliff Temples (马蒂思崖寺)
Mati Si is really cool. It's famous for the Buddhist Cliff temples, and they are very cool. Full of grottos and caves, this is a must see in China.

4) Zhangye Rainbow Mountains (张掖彩虹山)
This was probably the #1 thing I was looking forward to in China. However, most people don't even know about it. The Zhangye Rainbow Mountains are unreal, and a worthy addition to a travel itinerary in China that is full of amazing attractions.

3) Shangrila and the Songzanlin Monastery (香格里拉和松赞林寺)
Up on the border of Tibet in Yunan Province, the town of Shangrila is a really interesting visit. Lots of colourful people, interesting architecture, and the amazing Songzanlin Monastery.

2) Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces (龙的骨干梯田)
Near Guilin, the Drangon's Backbone Rice Terraces are a must-see in China. They were close to ending up as the number one thing to see in China on this list, but even the amazing landscapes of this place couldn't beat out...

1) Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the Avatar Mountains (张家界国家森林公园和阿凡达山)
Actually, this was fairly easily my #1 Thing to see in China. The avatar mountains in Zhangjiajie National Forest park are crazy cool. The incredible mountains were the inspiration for the movie avatar. You need to see this place with your own eyes!

That's it for my list. What's on your top attractions list for China?

rainbow mountains china | Zhangye National Geopark china | unbelievable places | one earth travel

this video includes - Zhangye National Geopark china
keywords - #ZhangyeNationalGeopark #china #rainbowmountainschina

Zhangye National Geopark is located in northern China, approximately halfway along the Mongolian border. It is located in the Qilian Mountains' foothills. The national park is 124 square miles in size (322 sq km).

The national park, formerly known as Zhangye Danxia Geopark, is renowned for the spectacular display of colors that spans hills and rock formations. The Chinese media dubbed the region one of the most incredible landscapes in the country.

Linze Danxia Scenic Area is the park's most visited and developed area. Binggou is the name of a second area on the Liyuan River. Although it is less visited, it provides additional views of incredible landscapes. Sunan Danxia Scenic Area is a third area.
The rock formations and rolling hills have an almost painted appearance. The landscapes are fantastic. Zhangye National Geopark is, without a doubt, the world's most colorful national park.

The vibrant landscapes were formed over time as sandstone and minerals were layered atop one another, resulting in angled painted layers across the rock formations and sandstone rolling hills.
