Felix Romuliana (Zaječar): Roman Heritage on the Danube Trail of Serbia - VR 360 8k

Felix Romuliana (Zaječar): Roman Heritage on the Danube Trail of Serbia - VR 360 8k
This impressive UNESCO SITE, Felix Romuliana, is located only 10 km from Zaječar, and it was built in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries, commissioned by the Roman Emperor Galerius Maximianus and named after his mother Romula. Immense polygonal towers, rising originally to a height of over nine meters, presented an intimidating visual aspect to any attackers in that time. The luxurious imperial palace Felix Romulana built inside the fortified complex consists of some fifteen rooms, most of which were paved with amazing geometric-patterned mosaics now presented in National Museum, Zaječar. This 360-degree video with immersive storytelling will guide you through this remarkable archaeological site in Eastern Serbia, also known as Gamzigrad Romuliana or Palace of Galerius.

David’s Been Here brings you Felix Romuliana in the town of Gamzigrad, Serbia. David takes us to the highlights of this amazing archaeological park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palace of Felix Romuliana was commissioned in the late third/ early fourth century by Emperor Caius Valerius Galerius Maximianus, or Emperor Galerius for short. He built it to commemorate his retirement from the throne and named it after his mother Romula. It is a sprawling compound spread across 10 acres.

The columns of the Imperial Palace are not completely original, but they were erected to give visitors an idea about how the atrium once looked. David also tours the remains of a temple dedicated to Jupiter, public bath complex, palace gates, and walls.

To see the artifacts excavated from Felix Romuliana, David suggests driving an extra 15 minutes to the Museum of Zaječar in the town by the same name. It holds an impressive collection of mosaics, statues including a bust of Emperor Galerius, Roman coins, and aerial photography of the site.

The Imperial Palace of Felix Romuliana is located in the vicinity of the village of Gamzigrad, 11 km north-west of Zaječar, and is widely regarded as the main pillar of the cultural tourism development in eastern Serbia. Galerius (Gaius Galerius Valerius Maximianus) is one of the sixteen Roman emperors born in the area that belongs to the territory of Serbia today. At his place of birth, which was a major urban settlement built on the territory inhabited since prehistoric times, Galerius built this magnificent palace and dedicated it to his mother Romula.

Danube Trail on the 'Roman Emperors and Danube Wine Route' is a cultural & wine tourism journey along the amazing destinations in Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania, offering a unique experience of exploring vivid Roman heritage surrounded with beautiful landscapes.

The Roman Emperors and Danube Wine Route, with its Danube and Adriatic Trails, extends through nine European countries and it is a network of sub-destinations, created around individual archaeological sites, locations, places and buildings, which are monuments to the leadership of the Roman emperors in Late Antiquity. The Route was certified as a European Cultural Route by the European Institute for Cultural Routes (EICR).

RIDING OFF-ROAD IN SERBIA (they gave me free wine!) [Ep. 4] ????????

Please support this channel by not skipping the ads :)

ALL SERBIA VIDEOS:

I started my day in Negotin, a small town strategically located in between the border of Romania as well as Bulgaria. I was heading to Zaječar (Зајечар) with the final destination being Knjazevac (Књажевац). I made a stop at Rajac and was humbled by the local interaction I got to experience, all thanks to Mira. As I was leaving Rajac, they gave me free wine to showcase their kind hospitality. The last leg of the journey was getting exciting as I took some off-road riding. I pushed my limit by riding these remote roads and overcoming my fear!

Serbia Sightseeing

Around Belgrade and Topola

Serbia is a great place to travel around, but my BGs were the worst here

Can you travel to Serbia with diabetes? Yes, but be careful! There’s a lot to see in Serbia, including a lot of fascinating historical sites that you may not have heard of before you go. Not to mention the appealing, ragtag towns and the accommodating people. Be smart, and be careful, and diabetes won’t stop you.

Right off the bat let me confess that Serbia was the worst country on my long European trip, as far as blood sugar goes. Not only did I have my highest reading of the four months in Serbia but the average was the highest of any country. In nine days, I checked my blood sugar 49 times. The readings ranged from 55 to 432. The average was 205. There were no perfect days and about a third of my readings were in the upper 200s or higher. Stressful situations, poor food choices, and unnecessary worry on my part all contributed to the Serbian badness.

Which is not to say that Serbia is a stressful country, or that there’s a problem with Serbian food. There isn’t. The problem was me, and looking at some of the stories from my time in Serbia, it’s obvious that despite the ongoing diabetic blunders, the country is an excellent and somewhat hidden travel destination.

For the first couple days, all my blood sugars were the opposite of what you’d expect. On the lovely bus ride through the snow-dusted hills of western Serbia my first two readings were 275 and then, despite the Humalog, 320. That night, after a large sugary rice meal at a Lebanese restaurant in Belgrade, I was 73 afterwards. All the next day I couldn’t get my readings down. Insulin just didn’t have the effect I expected. Until the pizza and beer — after that I was 113, and then 87 the next morning.

You know you’re in for a bad time if big plates of rice and pizza are the only things that HELP your blood sugar. Unfortunately this mysterious zigzag was just how it was in Serbia.

That next day was typical: we wandered around Belgrade, first to the Nikola Tesla museum, stopping at an outdoor cafe and then walking around the well-kept and endlessly fascinating Belgrade fortress area. Exploring the grounds and the ruins, and gazing at the preserved remants of war as we looked out over the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers, my blood sugars were fine all day. Even a bit low.

But then that night — after a simple dinner of bread and cevapcici, plus salad, I was 245. Annoying. But after an extra shot, I was up to 357 and had no idea why. After another shot I was still 261 but I gave up and went to sleep.

And so it went.

Here are two examples of stress killing my blood sugar in Serbia. First, our bus from Novi Sad to the town of Kraljevo seemed less than roadworthy. It was shaking and shuddering and the driver pulled over and ripped up the floor at one point to check on something. But he continued, and we shook our way slowly down to Kraljevo. My blood sugar had been bad starting out, but stressing about the unnerving trip made it 340 that evening.

Then the next day, the bad day. We had a great afternoon at Studenica Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site a few kilometers into the hills where we were the only tourists. The 13th-century frescoes and architecture were all breathtaking and it was a real privilege to have such an unencumbered and unrushed view of it all. But we walked the 11 kilometers, through the pretty rural hills, back to a bus stop and I let myself get pointlessly paranoid about low blood sugar on this walk. It was actually fine, but I was drinking juice for no real reason. After dinner I was 323. I took a shot but before bed there it was: 432. The highest reading of the entire 4+ months in Europe. And all because I worried about a long walk and its possible effect on me rather than reality.

Lesson: don’t worry. Just check and treat and relax.

The final stop in Serbia was the town of Zajecar, located down frightening snowy mountain roads that again made me worry and then ruined my blood sugar. It stayed mostly bad, even at another UNESCO World Heritage Site — the ancient roman ruins of Felix Romuliana, where we were again the only tourists.
