MERZOUGA, MOROCCO (2023) | Magical Merzouga Desert Trip Overview + Honest Review

Merzouga is a small town located in the Sahara Desert in the south of Morocco. It’s known as the gateway to the Erg Chebbi sand dunes at the edge of town, consisting of soaring peaks of sand that change color with the shifting light of dawn and dusk. The most authentic way to experience the desert is on camelback, including an overnight stay at a desert camp. Many companies offer such trips, but they vary greatly in cost, comfort, and experience. In this video, we will show you our 3-day safari experience so you know what to expect from a camel trek. We will also give an honest review and different desert activity options at the end of the video.

MARRAKECH, MOROCCO (2023) | 10 BEST Things To Do In & Around Marrakech

Marrakech is located in the center of Morocco. With its vibrant colors, buzzing atmosphere, mix of tradition and modernity, and aromatic smells, it’s a city like no other: Marrakech truly stimulates all your senses at once.

10. Explore the Marrakech medina (free walking tour)
The medina is the heart of the Marrakech, packed with shops, traditional houses called “riads”, restaurants, and many of the historic sites.

☑️ Free walking tour:

???? WHERE TO STAY IN THE MEDINA:
- Riad Basma (where we stayed - budget option):
- Palais Dar Donab (more luxurious):

9. Try the traditional local food
Some staples you have to try include couscous, meat brochettes, and the most iconic dish of all: tagine.

8. Visit the Saadian Tombs
The Saadian Tombs are a 16th century burial ground of the Saadian dynasty, which ruled over Marrakech between 1524 and 1668.

7. Find peace at the Majorelle Gardens
Located in Marrakech’s new town, these lush botanical gardens are filled with cacti, palms, and other colorful trees.

6. Stroll around Mellah Jewish Quarter
There are still a number of Jewish places here, including the Lazama Synagogue, the Miara Jewish Cemetery, and the Spice Market.

5. Get lost in the souks
What makes the souks in Marrakech remarkable is the wide variety of exotic items you can buy, such as babouches, lanterns, ceramics, carpets, and leather goods.

☑️ Different souks in Marrakech:

4. Check the ruins of El Badi Palace
The Saadian Ruler Al-Mansour who was buried in the Saadian Tombs built this grand palace in the 16th century.

3. See the beautiful Bahia Palace
After El Badi Palace, it might be interesting to see the contrast with the beautiful Bahia Palace, which was built in the late 19th century.

2. Go on a day tour to the Ouzoud Waterfalls
With a height of 110 meters or 360 feet, these are the tallest waterfalls in the country. A day tour from Marrakech includes a hike down to the river, do a short boat ride to get closer to the falls, and hike up again.

☑️ Ouzoud Waterfalls day tour:

1. Experience the Jemaa el-fna square + Koutoubia
the Jemaa-el-Fna square is the hub of entertainment, with a variety of food and juice stalls, musicians, fortune-tellers, henna tattoo artists, and snake charmers.

The TRUTH about the 3 Day Tour from MARRAKECH to the SAHARA DESERT (Merzouga) - IS IT WORTH IT?

Are you thinking of taking the 3 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi sand dunes in the Sahara Desert? If so, you've found the right video!

In this video I'll take you along and show you in detail what the tour is like. I'll show the truth, the good and the bad. The driving, the sights along the way, the food, the accommodation, the timings, the costs. Everything.

It’s a popular tour for anyone visiting Morocco, and it’s the real thing right to the edge of the Sahara proper, rather than the one day tours. Before I went I couldn’t find that much information online prior to going. There was no real detail about exactly what you see, where you stay and what you eat. Also, what you get for paying a little extra for the luxury option.
This is the video I wish I had been able to watch before going.

We’ll go from Marrakech and up into the Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass - The highest pass through the mountains. From there we come out the other side of the mountains and visit and amazing ancient town of Ait Ben Hadou, where many movies have been filmed. We’ll stop at the Rose valley and the Dadès Gorges before going to the hotel for the night.

On day 2, we’ll visit Tinghir and the Todgha Gorge before getting to Merzouga and riding a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes to the camp for the night.

The final day is the long journey back to Marrakech. On this day I’ll give you my full summary of the tour - the good, the bad, advice and tips.

Here's a full breakdown of what the tour involved, allowing you to go straight to any part you're interested in. Be sure to watch to the end so that you can hear my summary and useful tips!

Top 10 Tourist Attractions in Morocco, North Africa | Famous Places in Morocco - Tourist Junction

Top 10 Tourist Attractions in Morocco, North Africa

1.Marrakesh

The Red City of Marrakesh is a mysterious place, brimming with markets, gardens, palaces, and mosques. Traveling the intimate courtyards and snaking alleyways of the historic Medina can quickly eat up a day. Find internal peace at the serene Jardin Majorelle or take in the excellence of one of the historic mosques.

2.Fes

Fez fascinated scholars and philosophers, mathematicians and lawyers, astronomers and theologians. Artisans built them houses and palaces, kings endowed mosques and medersas, and dealers offered exotic wares from the silk streets and sub-Saharan trade routes. Although Fez missed its importance at the beginning of the 19th century, it remains a supremely self-confident city whose cultural and spiritual lineage beguiles visitors.

3.Casablanca

Located on Morocco's Atlantic coast, Casablanca is the country's biggest city and most active port with a population of over 3.5 million. For many, the name Casablanca evokes the romance of the 1945 film starring Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart; but the city's presence is a little different.

4.Tangier

Tangier is a lovely city to visit in Morocco. It has many of the things that tourists love: a sense of exotic mystery, fascinating history, beautiful vistas, unspoiled beaches, and friendly people.

5.Rabat

Rabat is the capital of Morocco since 1912. The city also has many interesting historic sites, including the picturesque Kasbah of the Udayas, built in the mid-12th century. The unique Hassan Tower began at the end of the 12th century and was meant to have the world's most towering minaret but never completed.

6.Agadir

Agadir located towards the west of the country, facing the Atlantic waves. Whatever the season, the sun smiles down on the city, and it enjoys a delightful climate that the trade winds soften further. The city never sleeps, and every summer treats the Timitar celebration dedicated to world music and Amazigh music.

7.Merzouga

Merzouga located on the edge of the gorgeous Sahara Desert, Merzouga is a tiny, dusty town in eastern Morocco, and famous for the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes. Here, rising peaks of sand change the color with shifting light of dawn and dusk.

8.Essaouira

Essaouira is a laid-back coastal town that gives travelers a nice break, just a few hours away. Essaouira's most significant attraction, maybe its relaxing environment. It's a small town, and being a beach place has a holiday feel about it.

9.Zagora

Located in the Draa Valley region of southeastern Morocco, Zagora's desert town has a fascinating history. The city founded in the 20th century. Tourists use it as a nearby base for adventures into the Sahara Desert.

10.Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen located in Morocco's Rif Mountains. The streets and most of the buildings in the old part of the town but painted with the most beautiful sky blue. The hills which you can see at the end of every cobbled lane are rugged and majestic.

ZAGORA DESERT TRIP IN MOROCCO ???????? الغزالة زاݣورة المغرب

HOW TO PLAN A DESERT TRIP IN MOROCCO
Picture yourself hundreds of feet high in the sand, atop a camel, surrounded by orange-red sand, while you watch the sun dip under a blue horizon. It’s so quiet you can hear only the thoughts bubble up in your head. At night, a sprinkling of stars illuminate the night sky so vibrantly, you don’t need a flashlight to see. You eat delicious, spiced food from steaming clay pots and sit around a camp fire with a glass of wine. What I just described isn’t heaven. It’s a trip to the Moroccan desert, and one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life. This guide will take you step by step to plan the perfect desert trip in Morocco.

WHY PLAN A TRIP TO THE #MOROCCAN_DESERT ? #WILD_SAHARA #ZAGORA
A desert trip to Morocco is one of my favorite experiences. I’ve never felt so at peace and enchanted by the natural surroundings. If you are the type of person that has trouble relaxing (me!), wants to see incredible dunes, diverse landscape, and escape the city life then going to the Moroccan desert is one of the best adventures you can have. After the Atlas mountains disappear over the horizon you’ll spot the golden sand of the desert, truly one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever seen in my life.

The Sahara desert dunes are shaped by the wind and are constantly changing to form new peaks and valleys. You’ll mix with the locals who are wrapped in white and blue headscarves as you’re whisked off into the sunset on a camel. If feels like a movie but it’s real life

WHICH DUNES SHOULD YOU VISIT IN MOROCCO?
The Sahara Ergs refer to the shifting dunes in the desert. There are two Saharan Ergs in Morocco: Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga. Both situated in the remote south/south eastern desert region of Saharan Morocco beyond the Atlas mountain range. We ventured to Erg Chebbi which we found to look more beautiful of the two areas

We take a 2 day Desert camping and camel ride tour to from Marrakesh to Zagora Morocco with Morocco Tour Guide company, check them out here.

Morocco Ep 4 Zagora - Tafraoute

I continue my journey through Morocco going from Zagora to Tafraoute up in the mountains. I have had some good times in Tafraoute over the years and it is always a place to visit. On this trip, I also want to get some paintwork done on the camper. A local workshop on the outskirts of the town does an excellent job for a very reasonable price, much less than I would have to pay back in the UK or Europe.

Zagora Morocco, the road to Timbuktu, the city center, the KASBAH and the Oasis

Zagora, at the gates of the desert!
Zagora is a city in southern Morocco located in the Draa Valley, near the first Saharan dunes. It was a popular stopover in the past due to its proximity to the desert, and it still offers many possibilities for desert excursions, including on foot, by camel, or in a 4x4. The city has a rich history, including an Almoravid fortress built in the 11th century that protected it for centuries. Visitors can stroll through the city's shaded alleys and walk through the monumental Ouarzazate gate to reach the center of the city. At the southern end of the city, there is a famous sign announcing the road to Timbuktu, also known as the door to the desert.

Morocco Desert Tour - Zagora city

Toursma Travel & Tourim is your Travel Agency for the best Tours & Excursions in Morocco.

Morocco - Zagora, Tagounite - On the Sahara Border

Zagora, flanked on two sides by mountains, is a small town located in the Draa River valley of Souss-Massa Draa in the south-east of Morocco. Family-owned gardens filled with date palms stretch out for miles between the city and the river. The Draa River, Morocco’s longest river, passes through Zagora, though it’s not always full of water. In Zagora you find the famous sign Timbouctou 52 days.

Tagounite is the second last village on the road into the Sahara. It is a melting pot for the different cultures of the area, inlcunding Berber, Drawi, Saharaui and Gnawi. In the tiny villages in between Tagounite and the Draa river one can explore the rich and diverse history, culture, vegetation and architecture of this oasis area. At the exit of Tagounite is the sign Tombouctou 50 days.

An absolute fantastic adventure over two days in Morocco, exploring the Atlas Mountains and an overnight stay in a camp on the Algerian border in the Zagora Desert. If you ever get the chance to do it yourselves I'd highly recommend it!

*I apologise that the map of Morocco at the beginning isn't completely accurate, I acquired from Pixabay hoping it was.

Morocco Vlog Ep.2: Sahara Tour(Zagora Desert) ????????

Tour:

You’ll be picked up at your hotel or riad in Marrakech at 07:20 to begin your 2-day desert excursion.

On the way to southern Morocco, you’ll cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi N’ Tichka Pass (2,260 meters in altitude). The drive takes you along zigzagging roads as you enjoy the views of the Berber villages of Imouzzar Valley.

Stop to explore Ait Benhaddou, one of the best-preserved villages in southern Morocco. This fortified village was built by the Ait Aissa tribe in the 15th century for caravan traders traveling from Timbuktu to Andalusia via Marrakech and Tangier.

The village served as a natural setting for several international movies including The Gladiators, Ali Baba, Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia. Enjoy a guided visit to the top of the hill that dominates the whole area.

Afterwards, you’ll head to Ouarzazate to visit the Taourirt Kasbah with a short break at the entrance of the city to see the cinema studios and old movie sets. You’ll also have a break for lunch before continuing to Zagora via Agdez and through the Draa Valley.

Your camel ride starts about a kilometer from Zagora. Enjoy the sunset along the way as you ride to the nomadic camp in the Nekhla dunes. Dinner will be served at the camp and you’ll spend the night in a private tent.

On the second day, wake up early to enjoy a spectacular sunrise followed by breakfast. You’ll have the option of a camel trek back to meet your driver.

The drive back will take you along the Draa Valley, with breaks to take in the views and for lunch, before returning to Marrakech via Ouarzazate.
