El macizo Fuego-Acatenango era originalmente referido por los colonos españoles como «los volcanes de Fuego».2

Acatenango Volcano in Antigua, Guatemala

Acatenango Volcano in Antigua, Guatemala
Acatenango is a stratovolcano in Guatemala, close to the city of Antigua. The volcano has two peaks, Pico Mayor (Highest Peak) and Yepocapa (3,880 m) which is also known as Tres Hermanas (Three Sisters). Acatenango is joined with Volcán de Fuego and collectively the volcano complex is known as La Horqueta.

The Fuego-Acatenango massif comprises a string of five or more volcanic vents along a north-south trend that is perpendicular to that of the Central American Volcanic Arc in Guatemala. From north to south, known centres of volcanism are Ancient Acatenango, Yepocapa, Pico Mayor de Acatenango, Meseta, and Fuego. Volcanism along the trend stretches back more than 200,000 years. Although many of the centres have been active contemporaneously, there is a general sequence of younger volcanism, from north to south along the trend.

This massive volcano complex towers more than 3,500 metres above the Pacific coastal plain to the south and 2,000 metres above the Guatemalan Highlands to the north. The volcano complex comprises remnants of multiple eruptive centres, which periodically have collapsed to form huge debris avalanches. The largest of these avalanches extended more than 50 kilometres from its source and covered more than 300 square kilometres.

The only known historical eruptions of Acatenango volcano occurred in the 20th century, between 1924 and 1927 from just north of the summit peak (Pico Mayor) and again in December 1972 from the saddle between Yepocapa and Pico Mayor. These phreatic explosions generated ballistic volcanic bombs that fell near the summit craters and fine volcanic ash that fell up to 25 km away.

In prehistoric time, Acatenango has erupted explosively to form widespread fall deposits, hot pyroclastic flows and lava flows. There have been numerous eruptions during the past 80,000 years from vents along the massif. The most recent explosive eruptions of Acatenango occurred 1,900 years ago (Pico Mayor), 2,300 years ago (Pico Mayor) and about 5,000 years ago (Yepocapa). If such eruptions were to recur, many people and costly infrastructure would be at risk.

The volcano has potential to produce huge debris avalanches that could inundate large areas of the Pacific coastal plain. In areas around the volcanoes and downslope toward the coastal plain, more than 100,000 people are potentially at risk from these and other flowage phenomena.

For visitors to Antigua in Guatemala; Acatenango Volcano and the neighbouring Volcan de Fuego (Fire Volcano) can be an irresistible adventure. While it would be unsafe and irresponsible to hike the active Volcan de Fuego, it is possible to hike to the summit of Acatenango and watch Fuego erupt from a safe distance. It is a tough hike up steep slopes with loose volcanic rocks and the altitude can be a challenge for some. There are different options, 1 day or 2 days tours available from Antigua. To get the most from the hike, it is best to spend the night on the volcano, so that it is possible to see Fuego erupt at night, when it is most impressive. Make sure you research the tour company you are doing your trek with well – six tourists died of exposure on Acatenango in January 2017

????????GUATEMALA Pt. 3: Volcan de Acatenango????

On the last few days of our trip in Guatemala, Lily and I hiked Volcan de Acatenango, camped overnight, and climbed to the summit to watch the sunrise. A challenging hike that took us nearly 6 hours, we were able to test our bodies' limits and see the most breathtaking sights.

Acatenango Volcano is an active volcano that rises to about 13,000 feet (3,976 meters) and has two peaks, Pico Mayor and Yepocapa. The volcano has erupted in 1924, 1927, and 1972. From camping at our base site, we were able to see Volcan de Fuego erupt every 20 minutes. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we recommend to do with Soy Tours (@soytoursantigua WhatsApp +502 4169-2292).

No Guide! Backpacking Volcan Acatenango

We Summited Volcan Acatenango Solo!

We hiked 4.5 miles to basecamp on Volcan Acatenango, then watched Volcan Fuego erupt all night from our tent, which was the best show we have ever seen. We hung out around at camp then summited Acatenango the next morning. After repacking our bags we headed back to civilization.

The views of Volcan Fuego erupting are such an amazing reward after this strenuous hike. We decided to fill up our backpacks and sleep above the clouds without a guide.

As always the best time to see active volcanoes is at night!! If you like hiking go for it but if you want to see lava make sure to be there when it's dark.

The park allows dogs and our pup loved climbing Acatenango! She drank 2 liters of water and ate an extra cup of food.

Our experience was very positive with friendly locals and tourists so we felt safe to leave our stuff while summiting. We did make sure to put it all into one bag and take it off the trail.

A lot of blogs comment on how cold it is, we were very comfortable at night with our 25 degree sleeping bags. We also brought a blanket for the dog who shared our sleeping mats, she always felt plenty warm.

Our Gear List :
Backpack
25° sleeping bags
Blanket for Pup
Sleeping Mats
Jet Boil
Hiking boots or shoes
Ski jacket
Beanie
Gloves
Long sleeved shirt
Fleece or sweatshirt
Two pairs of pants
Flashlights
Sunscreen
Camera with Telephoto
First Aid Kit
Poncho (always bring but we didn’t need, YAY)

For our sustenance we each had :
4 liters of water (there is no source)
4 granola bars
5 corn tortillas
1/2 packet of refried black beans
1 cup of precooked veggies
hot sauce
1/2 bar of chocolate
1 cup of oatmeal
1 packet of instant coffee
2 apples
3 peanut butter jelly sandwiches
1 package of mini Oreos :)

Head out there and do it for yourself! With or without a guide this backpacking trip is so rewarding.

If you’re like us with limited internet I also wrote a blog article describing our experience. Check it out!

Resources for the Hike :

Guatemala Backpacking in Antigua, Rio Dulce, Semuc Champey, Tikal

I travelled two weeks through Guatemala and I can tell you that there are really amazing places.
Sometimes it's hard to reach them. Like if you drive 7 hours in a small bus along streets which are still not real streets but it worth it. My favourite place was Semuc Champey.

We SLEPT on volcan Acatenango & witnessed Guatemala's most ACTIVE Volcano

On May 15th, 2022 we set off on the hardest hike of our life thus far. This hike was described to us as a rigorous hike that quite frankly whoops your ass. That being said, we went into it after a week of food poisoning and congestion. It felt wrong to leave Guatemala without having done the one thing we came all this way for. We had to push through and make our way to the top of Acatenango no matter what it would take. We can honestly say it was well worth it. The sight of Fuego exploding right in front of us was as surreal as it gets. The only way I can get close to explaining the feeling is by showing you.

We hope this video inspires you to do things that are well out of your comfort zone, but that excite you!

Fiery eruption of a volcano in Guatemala causes mass evacuation

Dramatic pictures show lava spewing from the volcano, located among the departments of Escuintla, Chimaltenango and Sacatepéquez in the south-central part of Guatemala. Disaster coordination authorities have asked ten communities to evacuate and go to safe areas. It comes just months after a previous eruption killed 194 people and left 234 missing. However, aid groups helping badly hit areas insist the true number of those still unaccounted for after the disaster in June runs in to the thousands. The volcano, one of the most active in Central America, spewed more ash and lava in October, prompting warnings for nearby communities.
