The Wachau is an Austrian valley with a picturesque landscape formed by the Danube river.
It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations of Lower Austria, located midway between the towns of Melk and Krems
that also attracts connoisseurs and epicureans for its high-quality wines.
It is 40 kilometres in length and was already settled in prehistoric times.
A well-known place and tourist attraction is Dürnstein, where King Richard the Lion-Heart of England was held captive by Duke Leopold V.
The architectural elegance of its ancient monasteries, castles and ruins combined with the urban architecture of its towns and villages, and the cultivation of vines as an important agricultural produce are the dominant features of the valley.
The Wachau was inscribed as Wachau Cultural Landscape in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites in recognition of its architectural and agricultural history, in December 2000.
In the Wachau, the town of Spitz lies on the Danube's western bank and the city of Melk on its eastern bank.
Other important towns in the valley are Dürnstein, Weißenkirchen in der Wachau and Emmersdorf an der Donau,
which have a galaxy of old homestead buildings dating from the mid-6th century.
The railway line built in 1909 between Krems and Emmersdorf is a topographical marvel.
The Danube River has a good network consisting of an inland navigation system.
The Wachau valley historic sights can be visited by steamer boats; the best season to visit is between May and September.
Autobahn services are also available from Vienna to visit all the important places in the Wachau.
The well-developed road network between Melk and Krems follows the contour of the valley.
However, there are no bridges across the Danube River in this region, and ferries are the only way to cross the river.
The origin of the wine growing tradition in Austria, and in particular in the Wachau valley, and its popularity beyond its borders, is attributed to medieval period of the Roman settlements.
The Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districts date to Leuthold I von Kuenring (1243–1313).
Wine production peaked under the Carolingians.
Krems has a long history as the hub of the Wachau wine trade, while the town of Dürnstein is also known for being one of the Wachau wine centres.

【HD】???? Walking Through the Old Town of Krems an der Donau in Austria
Taking a walk through the old town of Krems an der Donau in Austria on a Saturday morning. Most buildings in the city center are several hundred years old. Due to its close proximity to the famous Wachau Valley Krems an der Donau is a main tourist spot in Austria.
Krems an der Donau is an old city, some buildings are over 1000 years old. It's also home to three universities and numerous churches. When visiting, make sure to visit the old town which has a very unique athmosphere and try some of the local food. Krems in Austria is also well known for it's excellent white wines Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.
Every year in autumn the city celebrates the Marillenfest, a festival to honour the harvest of apricots which are grown in many places around the city. Located right next to the Danube river, Krems an der Donau in Austria can be reached comfortably by ship. It also a starting or ending point for many cyclists who take their bikes to explore the Wachau Valley.

The following video will highlight the beautiful town of Weißenkirchen in der Wachau in Austria.
The Wachau is the most beautiful section of Austria’s Danube Valley and Weißenkirchen is one of the prettiest towns to visit. The town is pretty small and easy to explore. We highly recommend you visit this town together with Durnstein.
The town is also a great town to visit on a day trip from Vienna (around 1hr - 1.30hr drive).

Waidhofen an der Ybbs
Waidhofen an der Ybbs is one of the prettiest towns in Austria. Heck it's one of the prettiest towns in Europe! Waidhofen is located in the scenic valley of the Ybbs River in the southwestern part of the state of Niederösterreich (Lower Austria). It's location is nestled amidst the foothills of the Alps where they are transitioning into the high mountains.
Waidhofen an der Ybbs is a very old city and has been the center of the Ybbs valley since the middle ages. Its well-preserved buildings from the centuries past are a major part of its charm. It could also be called the City of Towers as several distinctive medieval edifices reach towards the sky and give Waidhofen a unique skyline. Stroll through the small lanes of its colorful medieval town center and you will enjoy the delightful old-world atmosphere.
Of course, there is also much to do concerning the outdoors in the Waidhofen area. With streams and mountains abounding, the world of nature awaits. You can begin to enjoy nature only a few minutes from the town center with a hike up the Krautberg to take in the glorious views of the city of Waidhofen and its countryside.
And best of all, Waidhofen is easily accessible by train as it is a short train ride from the main east-west railroad line of Austria. Amstetten is the transfer city ... and it makes for an easy day outing from Vienna.

Charming and Adorable Medieval Krems, Austria
There is a Viking included tour to Gottweig Abbey but we said, nay and concentrated on adorable Krems. Lower Stein and Upper Krems together are Krems and is loaded to the brim with little medieval houses, remaining gates, etc.

The Mostviertel is Lower Austria's most captivating region. A flourishing, charming hideaway between Salzburg and Vienna, between the River Danube and the summit of the Ötscher mountain, almost 2,000 metres high. The delightful contrast between the gently rolling, fertile land to the north and the wild, romantic alpine country in the south inspires multi-faceted voyages of discovery, mountain adventures and fun-filled family holidays.
The Mostviertel lies in the western part of Lower Austria, south of the River Danube. The region is home to some 407,000 people, the major towns being St. Pölten, the provincial capital of Lower Austria, as well as Amstetten, Scheibbs, Waidhofen an der Ybbs and Wieselburg.
In terms of climate the Mostviertel benefits from both Atlantic and Pannonian influences. Fruit, wine and vegetables thrive in the mild climate of the gentle hilly country south of the Danube. Summer days in the mountainous alpine environment are pleasantly refreshing, while the ski regions have surprisingly reliable snowfall. The last day of the ski season in the Mostviertel's largest skiing area, the Hochkar region centred on Göstling/Ybbs, is traditionally 1 May.
