Aerial views - Historic locations : Yass - New South Wales Australia

Yass is located in the Yass Valley of New South Wales 602 km (374mi) from Melbourne and 280 km (174mi) from Sydney Australia.

Yass was a battleground between the town and the Sydney to Melbourne railway; because of the topography, the New South Wales Government Railways wanted to bypass the town by a few kilometres. Naturally, the people of the town wished the railway to pass closer or through it.

In 1892 a light railway or tram was built to connect Yass Junction on the main line and Yass Town. The railway bridge across the Yass River was the first lightweight, steel Pratt-truss bridge in the NSW railway network.
The last trains operated on the line on 29 October 1988 when steam locomotives 1210 and 3112 operated three final journeys on the line.

The Yass Railway Heritage Centre uses the Yass Town station precinct as a museum. Yass had the nearest railway station on the Sydney Melbourne railway to serve the national capital at Canberra.

Yass Town railway station is a heritage-listed former railway station and is also known as the Yass Railway Museum. The property was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

The Yass Town branch tramway was formally closed in 1988. The Australian Railway Historical Society (ACT Division) negotiated with the State Rail Authority and the then-Yass Shire regarding the future of the tramway and yard, resulting in the council assuming control and leasing the station to the ARHS.

The Yass Railway Museum opened in the former station building on the centenary of the tramway's opening, 20 April 1992.
The museum subsequently returned to control of the council, and continues to operate out of the former station.
The station precinct consists of a group of buildings constructed in 1891-1892. The station building is a type 4 timber roadside station. The site also contains a timber shed, a corrugated iron lamp room, and a goods shed consisting of a side shed without awning.
The platform is timber and at ground level due to having been used for a tramway. A T42 5-ton jib crane and an Avery 4cwt weighing machine are located at the station.
The track formation and track along Dutton Street also forms part of the heritage listing.

Gas manufacturing plants, known as gasworks, used to produce town gas for heating, lighting and cooking. Gas was generated by heating coal. The resulting gas was captured, piped off and used as fuel.
Most NSW gasworks commenced operation in the late 1800s. With the introduction of alternative fuel sources, many began to be phased out in the 1960s.
