Carpathian Mountains Road Trip | Yaremche | Ukraine | Travel Guide

We continue our tour of Ukraine with a few days in the Carpathian Mountains, using Yaramche as our base. The Carpathian Mountains slice through the southwest corner of Ukraine, and as we love a mountain and the scenery we took a train from Kyiv to Ivano-Frankivsk before hiring a car to drive into the mountains. You can watch our overnight train ride on another of the videos in this series.

Yaramche, and some of the roads to get to the town were awful! The local area has much to offer, sadly the weather was not on our side and we had rain, snow and overcast conditions for much of our time there.

The town has a few nice restaurants, a waterfall and some of those terrible roads!
You can drive around the mountain areas and most of the main roads are not to bad.
We visited the locations below and the links are to google for you.

Locations:-
Kotedzh Adelis
Viaduk Vorokhta

Coming back to life in Yaremche, Ukraine.

I had a mixed time in the city of Ivano-Frankivsk. There were no other travellers and I hadn't felt great. I feared that I had finally caught Covid (I hadn't).

So, I made my way to the small city of Yaremche, located in the Carpathian mountains. I was hoping that the cool mountain air would refresh my soul and give me the energy to continue on my Ukraine adventure.

Best things to see in LVIV | 15 MUST DO THINGS | Ukraine | Travel Guide

What are the best things to see in Lviv?
In this travel guide we will show you over 15 MUST DO things to see and do, in and around the old town. Explore the best of Lviv, with our top tips on what to see and where to eat and drink.
During our Ukraine Series, we spend an enjoyable weekend in Lviv.

Lviv is becoming a popular stop on any Eastern European trip. It's cheap, easy to get around and there is so much to experience. We say experience because almost every coffee shop, bar or restaurant offers more than just a drink or food. Themed, fun and very photogenic, you will end up spending much more time than you expected.

The historic old town is very comfortable to walk, with many markets, churches and restaurants serving traditional Ukrainian food and also catering for international tastes.

Our weekend was simply not enough time to see all Lviv has to offer so we headed back for New Years. Check out that video here

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME VISIT UKRAINE

Check events

Best Time to Visit Ukraine.

Blessed with exceptionally fortunate geographical location, access to two seas and a part of the mountain chain, Ukraine is a place where any type of vacation can happen. Unlike the countries where you can’t notice a big difference between summer and spring or winter and fall, climate in Ukraine shows very distinct four seasons. As a Ukrainian who tries to get the most out of every season here in Ukraine, I will try to show you the best way and time to experience the wonders of my country. Enjoy!

Spring
Weather. March is rather cold: 5 - 10 °C. April and May: 15 - 24 °C.
Why spring: Second half of the spring is the most popular season for tours to main sightseeing attractions. The temperature is perfect for long walks and recreational activities. The spring season in Ukraine is the time for various cultural and music festivals, grand concerts and sport events. It is a great season for hiking and camping.
Where to go: Uzhgorod, Uman, Lviv, Chernihiv, Kyiv.
What to see: I would recommend visiting one of the numerous spring festivals in Ukraine, like Sakura Festival in Uzhgorod City or Retro Lviv Festival. Moreover, many Ukrainian cities celebrate their birthdays in spring, e.g. Kyiv and Lviv. Such celebrations are always fun to take part in. If you are not a big fan of crowded events, consider avoiding long holidays in the beginning of May.
What to be aware of: The weather in the first half of the spring does not scream “let’s go for a walk!”. But it can be a great opportunity for ski lovers to go on a late vacation to one of the ski resorts in Carpathians.

Summer
Weather. 25 - 36 °C
Why summer: Summer is a perfect sea vacation time. Luckily, Ukraine has access to not one but two seas: the Black Sea and the Azov Sea. Dozens of seaside resorts offer their services for any taste and budget. If you prefer quality leisure time in the woods and mountains rather than on the beach, Ukraine has beautiful resorts in Carpathian Mountains. They offer recreational activities for outgoing people like horse riding, hiking, rock climbing, SPA etc.
Where to go: Odessa, Kherson, Truskavets, Bukovel.
What to see: Big cities like Odessa can offer almost any kind of fun or relaxing pastime. Nightclubs, restaurants and parks in the city and quite resorts outside the city limits. By the way, Odessa region has a historical Bilhorod-Dnister Fortress which becomes a scene for an annual Medieval Festival. If your goal is to improve your health condition or get a first-class SPA treatments, I would recommend one of SPA resorts in Western regions of Ukraine.
What to be aware of: It can get pretty hot in summer which is great for the beach vacation but can be a drawback for a sightseeing tour.

Fall
Weather. September is commonly warm: 20 - 15 °C. October/November: 10 - 5 °C.
Why fall: First half of the fall is warm and full of sunny days. It becomes a bit to cold for a beach, but just right for hiking, sightseeing tours and outside activities. Fall is the time for Cheese and Wine Festivals in many Ukrainian cities which can be a long-awaited opportunity to go for a gourmet trip.
Where to go: Ternopil, Lviv, Bila Tserkva, Chernivtsi, Carpathian mountains.
What to see: October is a great time to visit amazing park zones like Arboretum Sofiyivka in Uman or the Oleksandriya Park near the Bila Tserkva City. They look especially amazing with colorful trees: the walk can take all day. If you are a fan of extreme sports, I would recommend rafting tours in September (Pivdennyi Buh River). A castle-seaking tour around Ternopil or Lviv can be a lifetime experience. The best way is to rent a car or get a guided tour.
What to be aware of: Starting from October, the weather can change quickly and bring heavy rains. A sturdy umbrella and a rain boots can deal with the problem easily.

Winter
Weather: 0 - -15 °C.
Why winter: Of course, winter is the best time for winter sports and vacations that include skiing, sleigh riding and cozy relaxing in warm cabins. Ukrainian winter is commonly snowy and on the verge of being soft. Sometimes it can get really chilly here, and I’m talking about -24 °C, but most of the time it is comfy -10 °C with crispy snow ready to be played with.
Where to go: Carpathians, Dykanka, Kam'yanets'-Podil's'kyi
What to see: If your goal is to have a great vacation with skis, sleighs and snowboard - check out one of the Ukrainian Skis resorts: Bukovel, Yaremche or Slavs'ke. As for the winter festive experience, I would recommend visiting Ukraine around Christmas time. Catholic Christmas is widely and beautifully celebrated in Western regions while Eastern and Central Ukraine hold amazing celebrations for the orthodox Christmas.

Ukranian 2TE10s in the Carpathian Mountains

The Ukrainian Railways still relies heavily on Soviet Era 2TE10 diesels, known for their Fairbanks Morse inspired prime movers that produce incredible bass sounds and massive volumes of smoke. Currently the Ivano Frankivsk - Rahkiv line in far western Ukraine is one of the best places to see them in action with several heavy express trains on the weekends and steep grades that ensure the locos will be working flat out. We begin our trip in Lviv and after a journey to Yarameche we see several examples at work at scenic locations along the line.

Ukraine (Ukrainian: Україна, romanized: Ukrayina, pronounced [ʊkrɐˈjinɐ] (About this soundlisten)) is a country in Eastern Europe.[8] It is bordered by Russia to the north-east; Belarus to the north; Poland, Slovakia and Hungary to the west; and Romania, Moldova, and the Black Sea to the south. Ukraine is currently in a territorial dispute with Russia over the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.[9] Including the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine has an area of 603,628 km2 (233,062 sq mi),[10] making it the second-largest country in Europe after Russia, and the 46th-largest country in the world. Excluding Crimea, Ukraine has a population of about 42 million,[3] making it the eighth or ninth-most populous country in Europe, and the 32nd-most populous country in the world. Its capital and largest city is Kiev. Ukrainian is the official language and its alphabet is Cyrillic. The dominant religion in the country is Eastern Orthodoxy.

The territory of modern Ukraine has been inhabited since 32,000 BC. During the Middle Ages, the area was a key centre of East Slavic culture, with the powerful state of Kievan Rus' forming the basis of Ukrainian identity. Following its fragmentation in the 13th century, the territory was contested, ruled and divided by a variety of powers, including the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Russia. A Cossack republic emerged and prospered during the 17th and 18th centuries, but its territory was eventually split between Poland and the Russian Empire. After World War II the Western part of Ukraine merged into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and the whole country became a part of the Soviet Union as a single state entity. In 1991, Ukraine gained its independence from the Soviet Union in the aftermath of its dissolution at the end of the Cold War. Before its independence, Ukraine was typically referred to in English as The Ukraine, but most sources have since moved to drop the from the name of Ukraine in all uses.[11]

Following its independence, Ukraine declared itself a neutral state;[12] it formed a limited military partnership with Russia and other CIS countries while also establishing a partnership with NATO in 1994. In 2013, after the government of President Viktor Yanukovych had decided to suspend the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement and seek closer economic ties with Russia, a several-months-long wave of demonstrations and protests known as the Euromaidan began, which later escalated into the 2014 Ukrainian revolution that led to the overthrow of Yanukovych and the establishment of a new government. These events formed the background for the annexation of Crimea by Russia in March 2014, and the War in Donbass in April 2014. On 1 January 2016, Ukraine applied the economic component of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with the European Union.[13]

Ukraine is a developing country and ranks 88th on the Human Development Index. As of 2018, Ukraine is the poorest country in Europe alongside Moldova in terms of GDP per capita. At US$40, it has the lowest median wealth per adult in the world,[note 1][14] and suffers from a very high poverty rate as well as severe corruption.[15] However, because of its extensive fertile farmlands, Ukraine is one of the world's largest grain exporters.[16][17] It also maintains the second-largest military in Europe after that of Russia. Ukraine is a unitary republic under a semi-presidential system with separate powers: legislative, executive and judicial branches. The country is a member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the GUAM organization, and one of the founding states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
