Xi'an Xianyang International Airport is the main airport serving Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, as well as the whole Guanzhong area.
Covering an area of 5 square kilometers, it is the largest airport in Northwest China, and the second largest airport in Northern China.

Location: In the northeast of Xianyang city, 50km (30 miles) to the northwest of Xi'an city center.
Brief Intro:
The XIY airport with three terminals operates around 350 air routes.
Flights leaving from the airport connect many domestic cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Guilin, Lijiang, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Yiwu, Anqing, Tangshan and Yichun. This is few minutes of a much longer video I took in October 1990 traveling from Xi'an to Yanliang China. Of course...the video quality is not so good..but hopefully you find it interesting. So much in China has changed in many places since that time. What you see and hear was just what I recorded inside a small bus...

I put Part 1 on YouTube 9 years ago. An Exciting ride from Xi'an to Yanliang China in 1990.
Several people asked if there was any more video of the region. The answer is yes, but it has taken some time to get the old Hi 8 tapes digitized; here is some of it. The analog video tapes are 31 years old.
I had been that day with 3 colleagues at an aerospace meeting outside Xi'an, perhaps an hour or more away. I don't really know where we were., maybe someone will recognize the area's the video shows on the way back to Xi'an. Part 2 is the return trip ending at the Golden Flower Hotel in Xi'an. Basically I just let the camera run. Its shaky but the little bus was on a bumpy road. Much is driving through corn fields and corn was being dried on the side of the road.
The video is 31 years ago...so much has changed. I have more video and hopefully can post it at another time. I look forward to any comments.
Xi'an - China
Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi province, located in the northwest of the People's Republic of China, in the center of the Guanzhong Plain. One of the oldest cities in China, the city was known as Chang'an before the Ming dynasty. Xi'an is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, having held the position under several of the most important dynasties in Chinese history, including Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui, and Tang. Xi'an is the starting point of the Silk Road and home to the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang.
Since the 1990s, as part of the economic revival of interior China especially for the central and northwest regions, the city of Xi'an has re-emerged as an important cultural, industrial and educational centre of the central-northwest region, with facilities for research and development, national security and China's space exploration program. Xi'an currently holds sub-provincial status, administerring 9 districts and 4 counties. According to the 2010 Census, Xi'an has an urban population of 5,566,711 in its built-up area made of 7 out of 10 districts (all but Yanliang, Lintong and Gaoling not urbanized yet), while the total population of the Municipality is up to 8,467,837. It is the most populous city in Northwest China, as well as one of the three most populous cities in Western China. According to a July 2012 report by the Economist Intelligence Unit, it was recently named as one of the 13 emerging megacities, or megalopolises, in China. The report pinpoints and highlights the demographic and income trends that are shaping these cities' development.

Sixth in the China Today 1990 series goes south to visit Nanjing, ancient capital of China, with a complex past of internal conflict and demeaning Japanese occupation but revealing, to our camcorder in 1990, a magnificence now somewhat faded but, historically, it is a most fascinating city. Next, we go further south and east to beautiful Wuxi, superbly sited on the banks of the magnificent Yangtze River, with a very cultured lifestyle and a rich history, plus a thriving silk fabric manufacturing industry which is shown to us with great pride. The contrast between the two cities and their lifestyles in 1990 is vividly captured. Enjoy!

A group of Australian tourists travelled to China in 1990 - just after the uprising in Tiananmein Square - and they wondered what lay ahead at a time of great change in this previously reclusive country. Nine analogue videos using a primitive hand held and non-stabilised 1985 camcorder (the tape was later upgraded to digital video, then to DVD in 2010) of extensive travel to fourteen cities and regions throughout the huge landmass of China DO capture in often-fuzzy and shaky video the true nature of that vast country and the amazing differences in it's very diverse peoples. Above all, enjoy a tantalising picture of China emerging from a sleepy past to take it's inevitable place as the world's new leading power!
