10 Best Places to Visit in China - Travel Video

Check out all the places seen in this video:

China, the gateway to East Asia, is a fascinating country. It is an ancient civilization that gave the world Peking Man, gunpowder and noodles. Visitors making their first trip to China usually stick to the larger cities. More experienced visitors to the Middle Kingdom will strike out in other directions, where traveling may be a bit more frustrating because of the language barrier, but most definitely doable for independent travelers. Here’s a look at the best places to visit in China:

Top 10 Places to Visit in China - Travel Documentary

China is one of the most fascinating travel destinations in the world, and in this video I will share with you my personal top 10 best places to visit.

From the ruins of the Great Wall to vibrant megacities. From surreal mountain landscapes to charming riverside villages. Today’s China is a beautiful, complicated, and captivating place.

I spent more than 18 months in China, spread over the course of a decade and a half. In the last years, I started filming the places that I traveled to, using regular cameras and drones. All footage in this travel documentary is shot by myself between 2010 and 2019.

Here's a brief overview of the places in this video.

We start this journey in the stunning riverside village of Fenghuang in central China. The wooden stilt houses are a spectacular sight, and the backstreets are still filled with old world charm. We then continue to Harbin, best known for its Winter tourism. Millions of people usually flock here to visit the amazing Ice and Snow Festival, to admire beautiful sculptures and palaces.

Yangshuo is another spot not to miss, mostly for its mesmerizing mountain landscape of limestone peaks. It’s a great place to witness life in the countryside, and has a relaxed vibe. After Yangshuo we travel to Beijing, the nation’s capital city. The impressive Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven Park are two main highlights. And the nearby Great Wall of China is truly a sight to behold.

Zhangjiajie is the next destination on my list, and one of China’s most beautiful national parks. It formed the inspiration for the popular movie Avatar. You can get an aerial perspective from the many walkways, and don't miss out on the Glass Bridge here, if you dare at least. I continue my journey to Lhasa, the spiritual heartland of Tibet, and a place that left a deep impression on me. Take into a account that foreign travelers can only visit Tibet as part of a group tour.

Shanghai is a unique city with a jaw-dropping modern skyline, but also has some impressive historic architecture. It’s a busy place to visit, but also has many laidback neighborhoods and quiet streets. Yuanyang, on the other hand, is quintessential rural China, with an epic landscape of rice terraces. It’s a good place to meet some of the minorities living in the South of the country, and eat some local food.

I continue my travels in Qingdao, one of China’s most scenic coastal cities, located on the Yellow Sea. Many Chinese tourists come here to enjoy the beach and eat fresh seafood, but I was particularly impressed by the historic German buildings. I finish this journey in Hong Kong, easily one of my favorite cities in the world, and a perfect fusion between East and West.

The Beauty of Guilin | Southern China (4K)

It was a long dream of mine to visit this unique area around Guilin, Yangshou and Xingping in Asia. To be honest, it was on the very top of my bucket list. Now I finally made it to this picturesque landscape in the south of China and I should not be disappointed.

The karst peaks of Southern China are one of my favorite landscapes. But also capturing the Kormorant fishing on Li river, as it used to be centuries ago, was a big highlight. It was an absolute pleasure to shoot with Mr. Huang Gao Hui, one of the famous fishermen in Xingping. I was able to document a tradition that is unfortunately dying out, like many others, due to the increase of tourism in our ever developing world. The fact is, this man now earns far more through tourism that he would have done catching and selling fish locally.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

MUST SEE SIGHTs of CHINA for your FIRST VISIT! (Top 10)

These are my TOP 10 MUST SEE SIGHTS and HIDDEN GEMS that we saw during our 5 weeks in China. From busy cities to cute hipster towns. Natural wonders to man made gems. China really has everything need to make it your next favourite travel destination: this is your China travel inspiration!

In this video, we look at the best places to visit and some of the most useful China travel advice for your first visit: including train travel, how to access the internet through a VPN and how to deal with culture shock.

EVERY PLACE FEATURED IN THE VIDEO (in alphabetical order).

BEST VPN FOR CHINA: To access any western social media platforms in China, you're going to need a VPN. Ivacy offers a great VPN for a very affordable price (ad):

APPS TO DOWNLOAD
I should really have mentioned this in the video. Before your trip, make sure you download WeChat (it's free) for scanning things in shops and restaurants for translation. Didi is also a good one, it's the Chinese Uber!

BEIJING
The capital of China is a big, busy city but it's little hutongs are a lot of fun to explore. The Summer Palace and the Forbidden City are both really worth seeing as well.

CHAKA SALT LAKE -
A lesser visited gem, located about 4 hours away from the city of Xining in Qinghai province. Famous for it's mirror-like reflections of the sky.

CULTURE SHOCK
I received a lot of comments saying that people had some reservations and fears about visiting China. To be honest, I felt the same way before I went.

DALI -
An ancient city in Yunnan province that has a little bit of everything that I love! There's nature on the shores of Erhai Lake and up in the heights of Canshan Mountain. The stunning Three Pagodas temple and the bustling culture of the ancient city.

GREAT WALL OF CHINA -
Requires no introduction. But I really recommend exploring the wilder and more remote areas of the wall, rather than the touristy sections. In this film I looked at 3 different areas and compared the strengths and weaknesses of each.

HONG KONG -
A giant, sprawling city. Which also has some amazing natural spots like Lantau Island and Kowloon Park, That's what I focussed on in my travel film.

KUNMING -
Kunming has a reputation for being a transport hub, but it's actually a really fun city to spend a few days. The Dragon Gate and Green Lake Park are particularly great and are the main focus of my travel guide linked above.

LIJIANG OLD TOWN -
A beautiful ancient town with stunning maze like streets. It rained most of the time we were there, so I went searching for the little hidden gems of the streets.

RAINBOW MOUNTAINS -
This was the best day that I had in China. Away from the Danxia Landform Geopark is a peaceful national park that is so worth exploring. It feels more like Australia or the US than China.

SHANGHAI -
The last stop that we had in China. You can get some amazing views from the World Financial Centre Viewpoint.

TRAIN TRAVEL IN CHINA
The main way we got around China. We booked everything through China Highlights, which made thinks very easy (not sponsored, just good):

VPN (virtual private network)
You need a VPN to access almost every western social media accounts in China. For an affordable, but good VPN use Ivacy (ad):

XIAN -
I spent 24 hours exploring Xian and it definitely wasn't enough time. The Terracotta Warriors are amazing, but my film focusses on the other gems of the city.

XINGPING -
Home to the best view in China: Laozhai Mountain.

YANGSHUO -
Beautiful karst mountains, rivers and hiking. My video guide features everything we did there and it's a pretty extensive list! Including instructions on how to get to the best viewpoint in the area.

Explore Yangshuo's Ten-Mile Gallery By Bamboo Raft And Helicopter | 4K HDR | Guilin, Guangxi | 阳朔山水

Sauntering down a country road makes you feel like you are travelling in a painting.

This is true of the Ten-Mile Gallery in Yangshuo County, a fairyland on earth.

As the name implies, Ten-Mile Gallery is a picturesque road stretching from the Yangshuo town area to Moon Hill, endowed with rolling hills, endless fields, idyllic villages and clear rivers on both sides.

The peaks form natural sculptures in various shapes against the blue sky and beautiful flowers adorn the road.

Birds chirping all the way make the atmosphere merry.

As the road is not too long and in good condition, most visitors choose to travel by bike so that they can stop every now and then to enjoy the roadside landscape and take photos.

YangShuo Ten Mile Gallery is the sections, near the moon hill, alongside have tourist attractions like Big Banyan Tree, butterfly spring, ancient totem path, yulong river, dragon pool…… the best way to visit is to ride bike or e-Motor.

Yangshuo Ten Mile Gallery is located in Yangshuo Moon Mountain. It is known as the Yangshuo Shili Gallery because of its beautiful scenery along the road.

The best way to appreciate Shili Gallery is by bicycle. The government has set up many observation decks and rest pavilions for tourists to rest.

In the early spring, it is still the best place to see rapeseed.

The Ten-Mile Gallery Scenic Area covers a large area of countryside near Yangshuo, which boasts stunning karst peaks, peaceful rural villages, and the scenic Yulong River.

Within the Ten-Mile Gallery Scenic Area, the highlight is undoubtedly the Yulong River, which passes by amazing karst peaks and small villages.

Drifting along the Yulong River on a non-motorized bamboo raft is the most relaxed and tranquil way to appreciate Yangshuo's countryside and take in the otherworldly views of the surrounding karst peaks, making this a must-do activity for visitors to Yangshuo.

There are several sections of the Yulong River you can raft, but we suggest traveling from Shuiedi Wharf down to Gongnong Bridge, which is about 3 km and takes around 50 minutes.

If you want to spend more time rafting, you can also raft from Jima Wharf down to Gongnong Bridge, which is about 6 km and takes around 90 minutes. Both sections afford stunning views of the dazzling nature and picturesque villages along the Yulong River.

Be aware that the bamboo rafts are quite small and you have to remain seated throughout the trip. The rafts have no roof, so a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses are recommended in sunny weather.

In addition, there are small waterfalls along the river, which the rafts will go near or under; this is not dangerous, but it may wet your shoes a bit.

Depending on the day you are visiting, there might be long lines for rafting and a great number of rafts on the river. We recommend going early if you are visiting during peak season or on a weekend.

There are also paved paths on the banks of the Yulong River.

These paths are ideal for hiking and biking, as well as taking in the breathtaking views along the Yulong River. If your hotel is close to the river, these paths are perfect for a morning jog or evening stroll.

The vertical karst peaks near Yangshuo offer some of Asia's best climbing.

Within the scenic area, you can find several climbing outfits that provide a range of different climbing experiences, whether you are a beginner or an expert. This is a great way to explore the region's topography from a different perspective.

Accessibility Information
Traveling along the river on a bamboo raft is difficult and unsafe for wheelchair users. Visitors in wheelchairs can use parts of the walking path on the banks of the river, but please be aware that there are arched bridges at places along the walkway.

10 Best places to visit in China | Travel tips

You may be surprised to learn that one in five people worldwide are Chinese. China is the world's largest country and has a civilization spanning over 5000 years. The land is a staggering 9,600,000 square kilometers, so there are plenty of fascinating facts to keep in mind before visiting. For example, you can learn that there are around 30 million people who live in caves. Also, one of the oldest languages is Chinese, and one in five people in the world speaks it.

If you're interested in the history of China, you'll be impressed by the great achievements of the First Emperor, Qin Shihuang. The Emperor began his life as a peasant and later went on to build the Great Wall. He also used glutinous rice flour to connect bricks. Today, there are fast trains in Shanghai and Beijing, including Maglev trains. These trains can reach 380 miles per hour!

China is divided into 34 administrative units, including four municipalities and five autonomous regions. This makes it one of the world's most populous nations. It is home to some of the world's largest billionaires, and its railway lines could loop the earth twice. In fact, the length of the railways in China could even reach twice the length of the Earth. In comparison, the Earth is about forty thousand kilometers across. It's no wonder that China is rapidly approaching the United States!
