Walk in Xi'an Xingqing Palace Park, grandly opened after 1 year closure and renovation｜China｜西安兴庆宫公园
Located to the north of the West Xianning Road of Xi'an, the Xingqing Palace Park is a famous historical and cultural relic in Xi'an. Built in 1958 on the site of the ancient Xingqing Palace, the park is the largest city park in Xi'an, covering a total area of 621,915 square yards (520,000 square meters). Xi’an Jiaotong University--Xingqing campus is just on its south side across the West Xianning Road.
Xinqing Palace was built on the relic site of the Xingqing Palace of the Tang Dynasty. The site proper initially formed one part of the Longqing Fang (Fang refers to the living quarters) in the city of Chang'an. It also served as the official residence of Li Longji when he became the prince. Later he became the Emperor Xuan Zong of Tang Dynasty. His former residence was reconstructed into a palace named the Longqing Palace two years after he succeeded to the throne (721 AD).
Before long, the Longqing Palace was renamed the Xingqing Palace in order to avoid using the same character “Long” as in the Emperor's name. Work to further expand the palace was undertaken once again in later years. As a result, parts of the neighboring Fang, such as Yongjia, Daozheng, Xing'an and Shengye were successively incorporated into the palace. Emperor Xuan Zong began to administer the state affairs here. During the reign of Tianbao in the Tang Dynasty, the state became prosperous. The palace was rebuilt, all the more luxurious, and the gardens were tastefully planed. After An-Shi Rebellion (the rebellion was headed by An Lushan and Shi Siming, treacherous court officials; hence the name), Xingqing Palace lost its importance in politics and became a palace where Emperor Xuan Zong lived after his abdication. The halls and buildings in Xingqing Palace were almost totally destroyed through the chaos caused by war in the late Tang Dynasty and remained in ruins up to the beginning of the Ming Dynasty.
The scenery in the park looks quite elegant and delightful. All the buildings such as Chengxiang Pavilion and Dragon-tying Hall were reconstructed on their original sites in the architectural style of the Tang Dynasty, and their old names are still used.
In 2020, Xi’an City invested 800 million yuans to renovate it. After nearly one year’s construction, it was grandly opened on July 1st,2021.
I visited it in a summer evening and found so many beautiful scenery and joyous moments here.
