10 BEST Things To Do In Gozo [Malta]: Don’t Miss a Single One!

After a month spent living on neighboring Malta, we had tonnes of time to discover the best things to do in Gozo. For such a small island, it’s shocking just how many incredible sites there are; most of it surrounding the natural beauty the island has to offer.

We’ve broken things down into our absolute favourite 10 places to visit on Gozo … and you really should take the time to visit every single one. I recommend spending at least 2 days on the island, but you could easily spend 3 or 4 and not run out of things to see.

#1, the Ancient Citadela, is an absolute must-see for everyone heading to Gozo. It’s packed full of history and is the best place to learn more about the island.

#8, the Tal Mixta Cave, is one of my favourite spots and a true hidden gem on the island; plus, it offers unbeatable views of Ramla Bay.

#9, the Ggantija Temple, is by far the most surprising and wondrous attraction in Gozo. Over 5,000 years old, this temple is older than the Great Pyramids in Egypt!

Watch the full video to discover all 10 of our favourite spots.

Malta Trek - Haz-Zabbar to Zonqor, Marsascala - June 2018

Hiking from Haz-Zabbar to Zonqor on the ridge through the area known as San Leonardu and returning along the coast via Xghajra. We pass by the ruins of the building called id-Dar tal-Barunissa (also popularly known as id-Dar tas-Soru) [1:20] where a chapel dedicated to St. Leonard once stood (1656). We also pass by the chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas (1795) [3:58], Fort San Leonardo (1878) [3:06] and numerous World War II gunposts that attest to the strategic importance of this ridge in the defense of Malta from attack from the north. We then descend to the coast and return to Haz-Zabbar via Xghajra. On the way back we again pass by numerous gunposts that dot the coast and one of Grand Master De Redin's coastal watchtowers known as ta' Triq il-Wiesgha (1659) [5:57].

The Spanish Navy Santa Maria-class frigate SPS Victoria (F82) heads towards Grand Harbour at 10:21.

Asking people How Much Rent they Pay in Malta

Asking people how much rent they pay in Malta ? In todays video i met people that are living in Malta and asked them how much rent they pay. Some of the answers shocked me, as poeple who moved to Malta are paying a sharing room for €375 per month. Some other people are paying €950, some €1400 and even €4500 per month. The rent in Malta for accommodation is different according to the size of the apartment and the locality. Needless to say the rent in Malta has gone high up in the past 5 years and many people are not happy about that.

Malta Coastal Walk in Three Days

In late November 2019, I tried to walk the entire coast of Malta in three days. My sister and my brother-in-law joined me for the first half of this beautiful hike. We soon realised it was a bit too ambitious a goal, and it should probably be done as a 4-day hike (at least)*. The weather forecasts didn’t let us down, and we got perfect walking weather. Here’s a video of an unforgettable long weekend.

Thanks to Jonathan Henwood and Emmet McMahon for writing the helpful little book ’The Malta Coastal Walk’, and thanks to Bettina Hutschek for lending it to me.

*for time and blister reasons we cut across from Popeye Village to Santa Marija estate, so I went back and did the ‘tail’ of the map later. This also allowed me to see the Red Tower’s completed paint job.
Day 1 - 38km
Day 2 - 34km (plus 15.5km loop from Mellieha bay, circling the ’tail’ of the fish)
Day 3 - 46km
Total - 133.5km (15.5km of which were done at a later date)

Della Grazie Battery - Xgħajra, Malta

Della Grazie Battery, also known as Xgħajra Battery, was a British military installation constructed on Malta's north east coast east of Grand Harbour between 1888 and 1893. It is located in between Fort Saint Rocco (1872/1873) to its west and Fort Leonardo (1872/1878) to its east. It was armed with two 10-inch and two 6-inch breech loading guns. Two canopiers guard the ditch, one on either end of the seaward scarp. On this video we visit the one on the eastern flank. A sound locator and searchlight were installed within the fort during World War II to detect enemy aircraft approaching from the north.

Music: Saturn, from Gustav Holst's The Planets, played by St. Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Walter Susskind.

Xwejni Salt Pans in Gozo in Malta. Amazing!!! - Gozo Malta - ECTV

The salt is firstly collected from salt pans along the coasts of Malta and Gozo. Salina Bay, near Bugibba, is the main production area of salt in Malta.

I’ve recently noticed a number of little gourmet shops popping up on street corners in Malta and Gozo. These shops are treasure troves of local and foreign delicacies like locally produced salt, herbs, fruit preserves, jam, and even pretty Malta-themed homeware that verges on elegant as opposed to tacky.

Just last week I was browsing through a few shops, and a fine package of rock salt caught my eye. Placed on a shelf next to Maltese herbs and pepper, stood little packets or jars full of salt, either plain or infused with an aromatic herb. It seems that there is nothing that isn’t Maltese about this sea salt. It is collected, processed, and packaged by hand on the Maltese islands. Well, at least that’s what the knowledgeable shop owner told me.
Malta and its Salt pans
My curiosity positively piqued, I did some research on local salt production and just how Maltese and Gozitan artisans are bottling the Mediterranean. It turns out that salt production is a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation in Malta and Gozo. It’s only recently that several companies have begun marketing sea salt as a gourmet product.

The salt is firstly collected from salt pans along the coasts of Malta and Gozo. Salina Bay, near Bugibba, is the main production area of salt in Malta. At its peak of production, the Salina Bay salt pans would produce over 4,000 tons of coarse salt over two harvests. There are quite a few salt pan areas in Malta, albeit smaller than those in Salina Bay, namely those found in Marsascala, Żonqor Point, Delimara, Xgħajra, and Birżebbuġa. One interesting fact I discovered is Mellieħa, a Northern town in Malta, was named after the salt (melħ) produced in Għadira Bay in Mellieħa.

Malta and its Salt pans
The formation process of the salt begins when sea water starts to fill crevices in the coastline. This sea water is left to settle for eight days before it is moved to smaller salt pans that are warmer in temperature and further away from the sea. At the beginning of the drying process the water takes on a reddish hue and salt crystals begin to form. In fact, if you head down to the coast really early in the morning, there’s a chance you can see locals collecting rock salt from the 350-year-old salt pans in Marsalforn, Gozo. There are several salt pans along the Gozitan coast, namely in Qala, Dwejra, and Xlendi.

As per family tradition, once the rock salt has been processed it is packed up and taken to a small warehouse or garage, and then packaged by hand before it is distributed to supermarkets, souvenir shops, and gourmet food shops.

In some areas of the Malta and Gozo islands the stone coast looking like a curious checker-board network can be found. Although the networks looks rather strange, its origin and destination is rather clear – it was created for the collection of sea salt.

The usage of the network is rather clear and simple – the cells are filled by sea water and are left for some time for the water to evaporate. Than the crystals of the salt remaining on the bottom of the sell is being collected. The saltpans were the first industry of the Gozo Island and are known from the times of Roman Empire. During the centuries the salt was used as precious bartering currency. Nowadays, despite the abundance of modern technologies the salt is still being extracted in traditional way.

The “harvest” of the salt can reach 4000 tons in the peak of its production. After being collected, the salt is taken to the ware house where it is manually packed and distributed to numerous shops and supermarkets. By the way, salt is one of the most popular souvenirs that can be bought on Gozo island.
