Woudrichem (North Brabant, The Netherlands) - Part 1

Woudrichem is located in the north of the Land van Altena at the mouth of the Dammed Maas in the Waal. These two rivers then flow together as the Boven-Merwede. This confluence is also the 'three provinces point' where the borders between the provinces of South Holland, North Brabant and Gelderland meet.

The Dammed Maas is located on the east side of the town, with Slot Loevestein on the other side, in the neighboring municipality of Zaltbommel. The Boven-Merwede flows past Woudrichem on the north side. On the other side is Gorinchem, the largest city in the area.

Within the municipality of Altena, on the left bank of the rivers, Woudrichem is located between Sleeuwijk and Rijswijk. Other nearby villages are Giessen and Almkerk and a little further away Nieuwendijk and Werkendam.

The town of Woudrichem consists of two parts: the old fortress in the north (‘Woudrichem within the fortress’) and the suburb to the southwest of it (‘Woudrichem outside the fortress’). That newer part is a lot bigger and more people live there. Together, about 4200 people live in these parts on about 1.3 km².

Postally and for the statistical classification of the Netherlands, the hamlet of Oudendijk and the outlying area on the west and south side are also included in the Woudrichem residence. At the beginning of 2021, the population of the total area was 4,680 in an area of about 7.6 km². After the municipal reorganization in 2019, the boundaries of the statistical sub-areas of the Woudrichem residence have changed slightly. The northern part of the newer residential area has been merged with the fortress into 'Woudrichem-Noord', while the total area including outlying areas has become slightly smaller (from 7.68 km² to 7.55 km²)

Gorinchem is a city in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland.

It is assumed that Gorinchem was founded circa 1000 CE by fishermen and farmers on the raised land near the mouth of the river Linge at the Merwede. Goriks Heem (Home of Gorik) is first mentioned in a document from 1224 in which Floris IV granted people from Gorinchem exemption of toll payments throughout Holland.

Somewhere between 1247 and 1267, Gorinchem became property of the Lords of Arkel. At the end of the 13th century earthen mounts reinforced with palisades were built around the settlement to protect it from domination by the neighboring counties of Holland and Gelre. Half a century later real city walls were built complete with 7 gates and 23 watchtowers. Otto van Arkel granted it city rights on 11 November 1322.

Jan van Arkel had a dispute with Albert I, brother of Willem V of Holland, leading to war and subsequently to the annexation of Gorinchem to Holland in 1417. This resulted in increased trade and Gorinchem grew to be the eighth city of Holland.

On 9 July 1572, the Watergeuzen (Dutch rebels against Spanish rule) conquered the city and captured 19 Catholic priests and monks. Because they refused to renounce their faith, these priests and monks were brought to Brielle where they were hanged and were from then on known among Catholics as the Martyrs of Gorkum.

By the 16th century, the city walls were so deteriorated that they were replaced with new fortifications and eleven bastions that still are almost completely intact. The new walls were completed in 1609 and were located further from the town centre, making the city twice as large. In 1673, Gorinchem became part of the old Dutch Water Line.

The city walls had four city gates: the Arkel Gate in the north, the Dalem Gate in the east, the Water Gate in the south (where the ferry to Woudrichem was), and the Kansel Gate in the west. Of these four gates, only the Dalem Gate remains. The others were removed in the 19th century to make way for vehicular traffic. A portion of the Water Gate was preserved in the gardens of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. (Wikipedia)

0:00 Groenedijk - Rijkswal. The Town has a typical star shaped fort design, common in the Netherlands
7:50 Kerkstraat. The Gevangenpoort (Watergate) was build in 1573
9:50 Molenstraat, with the old city hall (Oude Raedthuys) build in the 16th century.
12:50: The Historic Rijkswal with views on the Windmill.
15:20 Vissersdijk
16:55 Enter the Alley/small street. Springstraat
18:30 Walking Around the late gothic Sint-Martinus Church. In 1717 the top of the tower was destroyed in a storm.
20:00: Arsenaal. Every Restaurant/Cafe is closed but take-outs are possible.

Woudrichem - Fortress City - Noord Brabant - The Netherlands

In het voorjaar wanneer het nog niet echt tijd is om het voorjaar in te duiken , probeer ik met de mooie dagen wat te ondernemen .
Het leek me een leuk idee om eens wat vestingstadjes te bezoeken .
De meest bekende voor mij ( en toch wel de mooiste ) is Woudrichem .
Deze stad straalt toch meer het verleden uit en neigt niet zo naar het toerisme .
Een stad die ligt op de samenkomst van 3 Provincies .
Noord-Brabant , Zuid-Holland en Gelderland .
In die tijd zeer begeert door landheren , Graaf en Gravin , wie het stukje grond zou kunnen toevoegen aan zijn/haar gebied.
In een tijd dat liefde nog tot een verovering hoorden.
De zoen van Woudrichem is zo een verhaal waar Jacoba van Beieren een grote rol speelde .
Een lang verhaal wat gelezen kan worden op Wikipedia .
Geniet van deze mooie en rustige vestingstad .

In the spring when it is not really time to dive in spring, I try to do something with the beautiful days.
It seemed like a nice idea to visit some fortified towns.
The most famous for me (and yet the most beautiful) is Woudrichem.
This city radiates more of the past and does not tend towards tourism.
A city that lies at the meeting of 3 Provinces.
North Brabant, South Holland and Gelderland.
At that time very coveted by landlords, Count and Countess, who could add the piece of land to his/her area.
At a time when love was still a conquest.
The kiss of Woudrichem is such a story where Jacoba van Beieren played a major role.
A long story that can be read on Wikipedia.
Enjoy this beautiful and quiet fortified city.

Woudrichem (NL) is a small fortified town on the riverbanks of the Merwede. Woudrichem can be reached easily by boat from Gorinchem. From Woudrichem you can go by boat as well to the Loevestein Castle and to the fortress Vuren.

Zalmtocht 2010 - Start Woudrichem

De zalmtocht is de aanbrengtocht vanuit zuid Nederland van een vloot van zo'n 100 historische vaartuigen naar Sail Amsterdam.
Vanuit Friesland en Noord-Holland zijn er respectievelijk de Palingtocht en de Haringtocht.
De zalmtocht voert van het oude vestingstadje Woudrichem naar Beverwijk / IJmuiden.
Op de laatste dag voor de Sail voegen de vloten zich bij de markante tallships en varen gezamenlijk in de befaamde SAIL-IN Parade over het Noordzeekanaal naar SAIL Amsterdam.
