A small, but beautiful historic city in The Netherlands. As it's off the beaten path for international tourists it has a typical Dutch vibe to it. The city is located in the Green Heart Area, which is an area well known by its beautiful countryside. It's the region where the most famous Dutch cheeses are produced. As a major city in the Green Heart region, Woerden became an important city for the trade in cheeses, like Gouda cheese. Let me show you the highlights of the City of Woerden in this video.

History
The river Oude Rijn used to flow through the city center of Woerden, but in 1960 the old river was diverted around the city center. The city has a long and rich history in cheese making and trading; for years Gouda cheese for domestic and international use has been produced in this region. Woerden still holds its authentic (since 1885) cheese market at the market place in its center.
Roman castellum
Woerden is situated on the river Oude Rijn, near the confluence with the former Linschoten (water) [nl] stream. The lower stretch of the Linschoten stream from Montfoort and Linschoten to Woerden silted up a long time ago and its flow was diverted through the Lek and Hollandse IJssel rivers, but at one time it was an important branch of the Rhine delta, connecting the Lower Rhine from Wijk bij Duurstede to the Oude Rijn near Woerden. Near the former confluence was an area that was slightly more elevated than the surroundings, a natural levee, which — in an area that is prone to flooding — made it an attractive location for settlement.
Here, at the highest spot, the Romans built a castellum (Castellum Laurum), as part of the limes of the Roman Empire and thus part of the defense lines of the northern border of the Roman Empire. The first castellum was built in the 40s AD and was destroyed in 69 AD during the Batavian rebellion. In 70 AD, the castellum was rebuilt, and the Romans remained until 402 AD, with an interruption lasting from about 275-300 AD.
The Castellum was located at the present site of the medieval Petruschurch and surrounding churchyard. During construction work on a new underground parking facility in the city center of Woerden, the remains of numerous old Roman buildings and a Roman cargo ship were found. During field research, a lot became known about the Roman time in Woerden: the location of the castellum, the zone of defense waters with the entrance road and the remains of a Roman cargo ship.[5]

Woerden is located at 52°5′N 4°53′E in the west of the province of Utrecht in the center of the Netherlands.
Woerden is bordered by the municipalities of De Ronde Venen (in the north), Stichtse Vecht (northeast), Utrecht (east), and Montfoort (south) in the province of Utrecht and Bodegraven-Reeuwijk (southwest) and Nieuwkoop (northwest) in the province of South Holland.
The population centers in the municipality are De Meije, Harmelen, Kamerik, Kanis, Woerden, and Zegveld.

WOERDEN CASTLE Drone 4K ???????? Holland Ultra HD
Woerden Castle is located in the city of Woerden in the Netherlands. The castle was build in 1159 by the bishop of Utrecht. In 1407 the castle was renovated and fortified. The castle is built like a fortress and never used by a duke or nobleman. The walls are 3,5 meter thick to withstand canons. In the later centuries the original defensive towers were demolished.

DE HAAR CASTLE ???????? Utrecht Drone 4K | Woerden Vleuten Meern Holland
De Haar castle is an impressive castle in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The castle is located close to the towns of Vleuten, Maarssen, Montfoort and Harmelen. This medieval castle of De Haar was built in the 14th century. In 1391 De Haar family received the castle and the land from the Hendrik van Woerden. In 1482 the castle changed hands and went to the Van Zuylen family. In 1801 the last Van Zuylen owner died. Nowadays the castle is preserved and protected by the De Haar Foundation and can be visited by tourists.

This was such a treat to visit and film! Woerden Marketing set us up with a lovely day to explore this wonderful city, but you can easily do it yourself and we definitely encourage you to do so!
???? Your first stop should be at the Tourism Office, but it doubles as the Cheese Warehouse (Kaaspakhuis in Dutch). Take the cheese experience tour to understand why Woerden is so popular. You can take the regular tour as we did, or create your own cheese!
⛪ The Tourism Office can also set you up with a tour guide who can't wait to share the secrets of their city. Our was Hans and he was such a gem! I can't even believe we got to go up the Petrus Tower (Petrustoren)..and it was JUST US! Not sure which was more epic, the view from the tower or the windmill. But, guys, the Roman boat that was found in the parking garage kind of blew my mind!

Woerden was founded by the Romans to defend the Roman Empire against the Barbarians at the Northern side of the river Rhine. The Romans called their defense Castellum Lauren which later was called Woerden bij the Germanic tribes living in the area. From 695 AD the Bishop of Utrecht ruled over Woerden and the city was fortified in the Middle Ages as it was located in the heart of The Netherlands between Utrecht, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague and therefore a very important transport hub over the Rhine. The city has multiple churches and a cathedral, a castle (Castle of Woerden), fortified city walls, and a huge windmill build on an artificial hilltop. The city of Woerden has a population of 55,000.
