Wieluń - Relaxing music walking. 4k tour.
I invite you for a relaxing music walking to the city of Wieluń, which is located in Poland in Central Europe.

We start the walk with relaxing music on Barycz Street, from where we have a view of the old, original medieval walls and the ruins of the Powder Magazine.

Then we continue our walk and walk along the walls and reach the Torment Tower.

There is an exhibition on the methods of punishing criminals in medieval times.
06:05 After circling the medieval defensive walls, we again reach the Town Hall, which also remembers the medieval times,
and we head towards the monument Eternal Love which is a tribute to the famous artist Wojciech Siudmak for his contribution to building peace.
Once we enjoy our senses with this interesting object, we turn to the south-east and we see the Municipal Office in Wieluń which has its seat in a classicist palace from 1840, which was built on the ruins of a castle built during the times of Casimir the Great.
Passing the office, we enter the Żwirki i Wigury Park and head towards the Secondary School, which is located in the building of the former hospital, which had the misfortune to be bombed on September 1 by the Germans, despite a huge red cross painted on the roof informing that it is a hospital. a monument commemorating this event.
We continue our walk to the accompaniment of relaxing music and we reach another park in Wieluń. This time it is the park of Captain Witold Pilecki, where his monument is located. Captain Pilecki became famous for, among other things, that he voluntarily allowed himself to be caught and placed in the German concentration camp of Auschwitz in order to organize a resistance movement there and send reports so that the world could find out what was really going on there.
The next point of our walk is the Museum of Wieluń Land and its wooden figures standing in the square in front of the building.
Then we pass attractions for children and pastry shops to cross the street to reach the square with one of the hundreds of monuments to John Paul II in Poland.
Without devoting too much attention to it, we go on further sightseeing and passing the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Consolation, we cross the atmospheric Okólna street and reach the city plantations and walking we pass the playful tower and going further - the sundial to finally come full circle and find ourselves again at the torment tower .

The bombing of Wieluń. Beginning of World War II. 80th Anniversary 1939-2019

There were no Polish troops in the town, nor was it, because of its closeness to the Polish-German border, a support base for the Polish Army or any kind of a bulwark in the defence system of Polish borderline. The plans of the Polish command specified that the defence was to be organised at the Warta and the Widawka rivers, so nearly 30 km east of Wieluń. Therefore, it can be stated that there were no military reasons for the raid on the defenceless town.
The first bomb raid took place at about 4:40. According to the eyewitnesses, the first to be attacked were the following: the hospital, the synagogue, the students’ residence hall at H. Sienkiewicza Street, the parish church, the Starosty Office building and the houses within the area of the Old Market (Legionów Square) and at the streets Palestrancka, Okólna, Barycz and Reformacka. The bombs also fell near the church and convent of the Bernardine Sisters and the evangelical church, but failed to destroy the buildings.
The shock was absolute. People, overwhelmed by panic, and many of them still wearing their nightwear, ran into the streets in great numbers. One could hear shrieks of terror and wounded people calling for help. Meanwhile, the fighter planes, not having to shield the bombers’ attacks from the Polish planes as there were not any in Wieluń area, were hedgehopping over the town and shooting the running men, women and children. The terror was augmented by the sound of Udet sirens, so called ‘Jericho trumpets’ fitted in the planes. All the eyewitnesses confirm that it was the time when hell began. Whoever was alive was running away from that hell, out of the town,
in an attempt to save their life.
After the first unexpected raid the planes returned over the town and dropped bombs again and again. The whole town centre was in ruins and under the debris of the destroyed houses there were hundreds of killed and wounded people. During one of the first raids the planes dropped 29 half-tonne demolition bombs and 112 50-kilogram tactical bombs. In the logbook of one of the squadrons it was noted: No enemy has been found (keine besondere Feind beobachtung).
In several bomb raids on the town, during which Wieluń was hit with demolition bombs of enormous explosive power (500 kg), the oldest historic part of the town was almost completely burnt or turned into a huge pile of rubble. The greatest destruction occurred in the Old and New Market and the following streets: H. Sienkiewicza, Śląska, G. Narutowicza, Augustianska, Palestrancka, Różana, Okólna, and Barycz, and, to a lesser degree, Królewska, Krakowskie Przedmieście, Reformacka, Rudzka (now 18 Stycznia) and Targowa. The buildings at the streets leading to and out of town, namely, Częstochowska, Sieradzka, Joanny Żubrowej, 3 Maja, Turowska and POW, suffered the relatively smallest destruction.
As a result of several air raids about 75% of the buildings were in ruins; besides, the historic town centre suffered the greatest destruction.
Eyewitnesses call the bombing of the town a horror. Those who managed to save their lives watched the raids as passive witnesses hidden in potato fields on the outskirts of the town. In front of their eyes Wieluń was being laid waste, the monuments of Polish culture were being destroyed, and helpless civilians massacred.
A fact which is particularly tragic is the dropping of the first World War II German Air Force bombs on All Saints Hospital, despite it being marked by the Red Cross emblems. Several dozen patients and the hospital staff were the first civilian victims of World War II unleashed by the Nazis. (...)
Basing on quite reliable accounts of Dr Zygmunt Patryn, the feldsher Stanisław Cierkosz and pastor Henryk Wendt it is estimated that nearly 1200 town inhabitants – Catholics, Jews and Protestants – lost their lives in the air raids.
In relation to the pre-war number of town inhabitants it was a very high percentage, as it made 8% of the population. Not many Polish cities suffered such a great population loss.

1. Poland was the only European country which never officially collaborated with the Nazis at any level, and no Polish units fought alongside the Nazi army. Poland never officially surrendered to Germany, and the Polish Resistance movement in German-occupied Poland during World War II was the largest resistance movement in Europe.
2. Marie Curie (Manya Sklodowska) was born in Warsaw (Warszawa), Poland, on November 7, 1867. She moved to Paris in early 1880 and married Frenchman Pierre Curie in 1895. With her husband, she discovered the elements polonium (Po), named after her native Poland, in the summer of 1898 and, soon thereafter, radium (Ra). She is credited for coining the term “radioactivity”.
Nicolaus Copernicus (Mikołaj Kopernik) was born in 1473 in Toruń (Thorn), Poland. he later wrote down in De revolutionibus orbium coelestium; its revolutionary contention was that the sun, not Earth, was the center of the planetary system. The work was published by church authorities in Nuremberg in 1543, the year Copernicus died.
In October 1978, the Bishop of Kraków, Poland, Cardinal Karol Józef Wojtyla, became Pope John Paul II, the 264th head of the Roman Catholic Church on October 16, 1978 at 5:15 p.m.
Frédéric François Chopin (Fryderyk Franciszek Szopen), is Poland’s most famous composer. Chopin was born in Żelazowa Wola, Poland, in 1810.

4. Nearly 35% of the 60 million Poles live abroad and large Polish speaking communities can be found in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Australia, Brazil and Argentina. Polish has the second largest number of speakers among the Slavic languages after Russian.
5. Poland has a desert: the Bledow Desert. It’s an oddity in such a lush countryside. In the 13th century, the forest here was felled to foster silver and lead mining. It revealed a hitherto hidden deep layer of sand, deposited by waters flowing from melting glaciers perhaps a century before. Humankind's destruction of native plant life, in league with the natural deposit of sand, created the desert.
6. Paradoxically, Warsaw’s Old Town is only 50 years old. During the Invasion of Poland (1939), much of the district was badly damaged by the German Luftwaffe. Immediately after the Warsaw Uprising (August–October 1944) what had been left standing was systematically blown up by the German Army. After World War II, the Old Town was meticulously rebuilt.
7. Some of the first shots fired during the WWII took place in Gdansk – Westerplatte. The first cannon shots of WW2 fell here from a German Battleship in the Baltic Sea. There is a monument there in honour of the Polish solders that stood for seven days against the German’s attack.
