10 Best Things to Do in Chiang Mai

10 Best Things to Do in Chiang Mai

Doi Suthep
Gleaming like a northern star from the heights of Doi Suthep (the regal mountain overlooking the city from the northwest) is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. It is one of the most historically and spiritually significant places in Thailand and is an impressive embodiment of the Lanna culture, with its origins dating back almost 700 years.

Chiang Mai Zoo
Covering 200 acres of land in the foothills of Doi Suthep and providing excellent views of the city in addition to fascinating wildlife exhibits, Chiang Mai Zoo is certainly worth a visit. Nearly 400 species of animal are kept here, including the two 'cultural ambassador' or pandas from China.

Chiang Mai Night Safari
Modeled after a similar attraction in Singapore, Chiang Mai Night Safari features three animal zones – Savanna Safari, Predator Prowl, Jaguar Trail – which you can tour via an open-sided tram or on foot. Enjoy a range of activities designed to keep you entertained throughout your visit, from hand-feeding wild animals and petting tiger cubs to a laser light show and ‘dancing’ fountain.

Wat Chedi Luang
Built sometime between 1385 and 1402, during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, 7th ruler of the Mengrai dynasty, Wat Chedi Luang's massive chedi (pagoda) is a distinctive feature of the Chiang Mai skyline. At its peak, the chedi measured 60 metres across at the square base and 80 metres tall and was once the home of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most sacred religious relic.

Wiang Kum Kam the Underground Ancient City
Located in attractive countryside about five kilometres south of Chiang Mai along the Ping River, Wiang Kum Kam is an ancient city dating back to the eighth-century Haripunchai Kingdom. Expect to see many interesting items and structures such as stone tablets with Mon inscriptions, Buddhist sculptures and architecture, earthenware and pottery.

Mae Sa Elephant Camp
Having secured their names in the Guinness World Record, the elephants at the Mae Sa Elephant Camp are no ordinary beasts. Apart from going about their daily routine of bathing, eating, sleeping and just being domesticated elephants, these extremely intelligent animals have been trained to paint, play football, dance and perform a string of talent shows that will change the way you think about Thai elephants.

Doi Inthanon National Park
Doi Inthanon, the highest peak in Thailand, rises 2,565 metres above sea level. Known as a sanctuary for a wide range of animal species and perhaps the best place in Thailand for bird-watching, the park has approximately 362 different species, many of which are not found anywhere else in Thailand. Doi Inthanon is a popular destination, not only for its natural beauty, but also for its historical significance.

Doi Pui Tribal Village and National Park
Doi Pui, at 1,685metres above sea level, is the highest peak in the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. It is famous for its beautiful waterfalls which are easily reached from the main road. But one of the hottest attractions for Doi Pui must be Hmong Tribal Village situated less than five kilometres from the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.

Karen Long Neck Tribe & Chiang Dao Cave
At Chiang Dao cave, the caverns stretch many kilometres into the mountain yet only a small part of the complex is possible to explore. Two of the caves, Tham Phra Nawn and Tham Seua Dao, are illuminated by electric lights, but the upper caves are pitch-black and requires a local lantern-carrying guides to lead the way.

Bo Sang Handicraft Village
The handcrafting of umbrellas and parasols in Bo Sang Village is known throughout the country and even abroad – so much so that the umbrella has become one of the symbols of Chiang Mai. Here, you'll find plenty of hand-painted umbrellas, tiny cocktail umbrellas, large parasols for gardens or patios and other handmade products – all made from sa paper in various designs and at reasonable prices.

【???????? 4K】Damnoen Saduak Floating Market - MOST LARGEST FLOATING MARKET THAILAND 2022

Damnoen Saduak is the most popular floating market in Thailand, great for photo opportunities, food, and for giving you an insight into a bygone way of life. An early morning start is worth it to avoid the heat and catch Damnoen Saduak at its liveliest.

The famous floating market, and unlike others which are standing markets floating on water, this one uses boats to buy&sell. Just 100km from Bangkok, it’s best accessed by package tour, which any local tour operator can organize.

Our visit Chiang Mai travel guide documentary covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (best restaurants and street food), top museums, fascinating temples and the city by day and evening when Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่) comes alive at night. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Chiang Mai tourism brochure, Chiang Mai city tour or Chiang Mai itinerary.

20 Things to do in Chiang Mai, Thailand Travel Guide Video Transcript:

Today we’re taking you around a city that we’ve been to many times before: Chiang Mai. Located in the heart of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is a growing city with laid back vibes, temples sprinkled around every corner, and a foodie scene that will make you drool. This is a destination where you come to unwind and that’s exactly what we did during our month long visit. Now let’s get started with this tour of Chiang Mai (清邁) so you can see what this city is all about:

One of the best things you can do in Chiang Mai is ditch the map and get lost inside the old city. It’s along the quiet back lanes that you’ll find cozy cafes, terracotta gardens, unvisited temples, and a little flavour of the old Chiang Mai.

As you’ve probably figured out, we’re not really into nightlife, but Chiang Mai does have lots of bars where you can enjoy a drink or two. We kept things light with a Chang beer.

And that’s a wrap for our visit to Chiang Mai, Thailand. We hope this video gave you a little taste of what this city is all about. We’ll be the first to tell you that we barely scratched the surface in terms of everything Chiang Mai (清迈) has to offer, but that being said, the goal of our time here was to relax, eat well, see friends, and catch up on work. As always, if you have any other suggestions of things to do, places to visit, and restaurants to eat at, feel free to share those with fellow travellers in the comments below. Until next time!

This is part of our Travel in Thailand video series showcasing Thai food, Thai culture and Thai cuisine.

Thailand - Visiting the Heaven and Hell temple in Nan

Nan is a charming town in northern Thailand located in a province with the same name. What might first appear to be a rural backwater is actually a fantastic place to dive in and experience authentic Thai culture.

In this episode we visit a traditional Thai Lue Hilltribe Village in the highlands of Nan, and then descend to the provincial capital to discover a temple with a heavenly mural and a dramatic portrayal of hell.

Mae Kachan, Wiang Pa Pao and Thaweesin Hot Springs, Thailand

Mae Kachan Hot Spring is located about halfway between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. In fact, it’s the intermission spot for drivers during the way from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, or from Chiang Mai to Phayao. The hot springs there are totally natural. They are about 90°C, hot enough to boil eggs in the water. The springs complex has been extended on both sides of the road and features bars and restaurants, a small supermarket, traditional handicrafts shops and souvenir shops.

Wiang Kum Kam, Chiang Mai

In 1984, just outside the modern Chiang Mai metropolitan area, archaeologists uncovered the remains of an ancient city. Research concluded that this was the city of Wiang Kum Kam, one of many fortified cities built by King Mengrai as he consolidated his hold on the north. In fact, it appears that Mengrai may have lived at Wiang Kum Kam for a few years before Chiang Mai was constructed.

Nearly 20 temple sites have been uncovered in the area, which lies between the Ping river and the Lamphun highway, south of Mahidol Road. The buildings were buried under ground by years of flooding, which apparently is the reason Mengrai eventually moved his capital to Chiang Mai. In fact, the Ping river originally flowed along the north side of the town, but at some point during the Burmese occupation from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, the river changed course and now flows along the west side of the site. The change of course was apparently the final straw which caused the city to be largely abandoned for 300 years.

The site is too large to cover on foot. The best way to see it is to start at the still working temple of Wat Chedi Liam, and tour the site by bicycle, tram or pony carriage. The nine main sites taken in on a typical tour are not greatly interesting compared to many of Thailand's ancient sites. What does make the trip worthwhile is the gentle pace and scenery of the countryside viewed from the back of a carriage or on a bicycle.

Although most of the sites are not much more than platforms and ruined chedis, there are two working temples in the area that date from the city's heyday at the end of the thirteenth century. One is your logical starting point, Wat Chedi Liam. The other, more vibrant temple is Wat Khan Tom (also known as Wat Chang Kum), where in fact the spirit of King Mengrai is said to still reside.
