Citytour Dordrecht in 1 minute | One of best Places to Visit in a citytrip in the Netherlands

A short movie with the best places of Dordrecht, the oldest city of the Netherlands. A must see in your holiday city tour in the Netherlands.

The rich past of Dordrecht is still visible when you walk past the old inner city harbors, monuments and museums of Dordrecht. Not to be missed are the Grote Kerk, the widely praised paintings collection of the Dordrechts Museum, the beautiful interiors of the old mayor's house 'Huis van Gijn' and the thirteenth-century Augustinian monastery 'Het Hof'. Another recommendation is the magnificent view of the crossing of rivers from the Groothoofd.

Woudrichem (North Brabant, The Netherlands) - Part 1

Woudrichem is located in the north of the Land van Altena at the mouth of the Dammed Maas in the Waal. These two rivers then flow together as the Boven-Merwede. This confluence is also the 'three provinces point' where the borders between the provinces of South Holland, North Brabant and Gelderland meet.

The Dammed Maas is located on the east side of the town, with Slot Loevestein on the other side, in the neighboring municipality of Zaltbommel. The Boven-Merwede flows past Woudrichem on the north side. On the other side is Gorinchem, the largest city in the area.

Within the municipality of Altena, on the left bank of the rivers, Woudrichem is located between Sleeuwijk and Rijswijk. Other nearby villages are Giessen and Almkerk and a little further away Nieuwendijk and Werkendam.

The town of Woudrichem consists of two parts: the old fortress in the north (‘Woudrichem within the fortress’) and the suburb to the southwest of it (‘Woudrichem outside the fortress’). That newer part is a lot bigger and more people live there. Together, about 4200 people live in these parts on about 1.3 km².

Postally and for the statistical classification of the Netherlands, the hamlet of Oudendijk and the outlying area on the west and south side are also included in the Woudrichem residence. At the beginning of 2021, the population of the total area was 4,680 in an area of about 7.6 km². After the municipal reorganization in 2019, the boundaries of the statistical sub-areas of the Woudrichem residence have changed slightly. The northern part of the newer residential area has been merged with the fortress into 'Woudrichem-Noord', while the total area including outlying areas has become slightly smaller (from 7.68 km² to 7.55 km²)

National Park De Biesbosch / The Netherlands / 53km

The Biesbosch National Park is a nature conservation area and the largest fresh water tidal zone in Europe. We have been back there on our bikes multiple times; just love it!

We start our bike ride in a town called Drimmelen, near the local marina. There is paid parking there; I think we pay approximately €6 or so for the day.

You can see our signposted cycle route in the picture below. You can use the app Routiq previously known as Route.nl and search for route number 2455173 with the description: Biesbosch Route. You can follow the route as indicated but do pay attention in the beginning of your ride between signpost 98 and 21: the app sends you on a parallel road below the dike whereas the bike path with the better view is right on top of the dike along the river.

Cycling in a loop around this unique nature scene is quite doable as long as you can take the bike ferry across in Lage Zwaluwe, called 't Leeuweveerke. Check their schedule on their website listed below. If the ferry happens to not run, you will needs to take the Moerdijk bridge. Then your bike ride suddenly is over 85km to complete. This happened to us the first time. The ferry didn't run due to COVID restrictions. Biking more than 85km versus 55km is not a minor difference so do check on the ferry schedule!

A really nice thing about the ferry is that it runs on solar energy. Another nice thing is that while you wait for the ferry on the Lage Zwaluwe side, you can enjoy a drink or lunch at Lunchroom Biesla.

If you jump on the ferry without a stop at Lunchroom Biesla, don't worry. You'll love restaurant Het Bolle Bevertje further up on our route. If you are a tourist visiting The Netherlands without your own bikes, this is also where you can rent bikes and then start your tour there instead.

Our route continues and will pass by the Biesbosch Museum. Truth be told ... we haven't stopped there yet. Next time we will!

A great place to stop along the way is De Selevia Hoeve. You really can't miss this large equestrian event center with its own brasserie and terrace. A great place for a coffee/tea and a timely stop for a bathroom break.

The route continues through the town of Werkendam. There are probably great places to see there too but by then we usually plow through to get to the end of our bike route.

There is one more oddity on the Routiq/Route.nl map between signpost 14 and 18: on the Oranjepolderweg you'd likely prefer the road instead of the bike path. On the map you see that the bike path takes a loop south whereas the road goes straight. There is nothing specifically interesting about that bike path diversion and by then you'll feel your legs enough to be just slightly annoyed. Not a big deal either way, but kind of nice to catch the road going straight instead.

From here it is straight back to Drimmelen where we parked our car. After we put our bikes back on the car, the marina in Drimmelen gives you many options for a bite to eat while enjoying the boating/vacation spirit and lovely evening sun. Our favourite place is More-Itz Restaurant, but make sure you have a change of clothes because you'll be out character there in biking shorts! It’s a hip, upscale place with great food and drinks.

National Park The Biesbosch, Netherlands

De Biesbosch ('forest of sedges' or 'rushwoods') National Park, is one of the largest national parks of the Netherlands and one of the last extensive areas of freshwater tidal wetlands in Northwestern Europe. The Biesbosch consists of a large network of rivers and smaller and larger creeks with islands. The vegetation is mostly willow forests, although wet grasslands and fields of reed are common as well. The Biesbosch is an important wetland area for waterfowl and has a rich flora and fauna. It is especially important for migrating geese.
The Biesbosch was created when 300 square kilometres of polder lands were submerged in the St. Elizabeth flood in the year 1421. Before this, the area was called Grote Hollandse Waard, containing cultivated land and a number of villages. The more than a century old dikes collapsed because of lack of maintenance, due to the difficult economic situation in the area, and the difficulties between the political entities within (especially the Hook and Cod (civil) wars).
Before 1970 a connection with the sea existed, and the tidal differences were, on average, two meters. Despite the diminished inflow of the Meuse and Waal rivers, fresh water continued to dominate. The tidal differences almost disappeared after 1970 when the Delta Works closed the Haringvliet and with it the Biesbosch's direct connection with the sea. Only in the northern part of the Biesbosch (the so-called Sliedrechtse Biesbosch) some of the tidal difference remained (20–80 cm on average). The diminishing of the tidal difference caused a dramatic transformation of the Biesbosch, which mostly changed into a willow forest with small remnants of the once mighty delta streams. The creation of the Haringvlietdam also blocked the main route for migrating fish. The influence of both rivers and sea had now mostly gone.
The Dutch government has decided to undo most of the reclamation and give it back to nature and to reconnect the main rivers with the Biesbosch creeks. This decision has been made as a result of extremely high river discharges in 1993 and 1995. This means that a large part of the Biesbosch will return to its original state: an interconnected network of rivers and creeks, serving as an inland river delta. The area can then be used as a natural buffer to prevent major floods and to lower the risk of very high river levels. This will also restore some of the natural situation and will result in an expansion of the habitat of many animals. Much of this operation is near completion as of 2014.
Especially the beaver population could profit from these hydrological changes (and, as of 2014, they indeed expanded their range significantly). It would also hopefully create the right conditions for the return of the osprey and the white-tailed eagle as breeding birds. Because of recent nature development of new wetlands the great egret and the little egret have already become familiar elements in the Biesbosch today.

Holland Storys | Niederlande Wasserland - National Park De Biesbosch

Brabantse Biesbosch Part 1 (Drimmelen)

Ned - Eng

The Biesbosch is a beautiful piece of nature, in the first part I left from the municipality Drimmelen.
This part I find the most touristy part, a lot of recreation and too busy to really spot animals, but definitely beautiful.

In the second part I will leave the municipality of Werkendam with a whisper boat. There is much more to see about the animal world itself in the somewhat narrower channels.
Part 2 has to wait a bit, it still needs to be mounted.

Enjoy this 7 minutes Brabantse Biesbosch, Music B-Tribe ` Albatros
is the melody familiar?
Think of FleedwoodMac.

Wandeling Deurnese Peel, Deurne in Noord-Brabant - 4K

Wandeling Deurnese Peel, Deurne in Noord-Brabant.
