Austria Travel: The main square of Weiz

If you want to read more about my trip to Austria please go to:

This video clip was taken on July 28, 2007 during my trip to Austria , my home country. First my brother, sister-in-law and I visited the weekly Saturday market in the city of Gleisdorf which shows all sorts of colourful products and characters. Then we drove to Weiz, 15 minutes away, where I examined the main square and also visited the stands of the farmer's market. In the afternoon I went hiking in a river valley called die kleine Raabklamm (small Raab gorge) and later I went on a country drive to a mining town called Arzberg, in the Austrian pre-Alpine area. This was on a trip back home to my birth country and the town that I was born in, all at the occasion of my brother's 50th birthday.

I am actually a travel writer who loves to explore international destinations as well as my chosen home town of Toronto . Styria, Austria | City of Graz, nature, attractions | Drone 4k video | Land of Styria what to see

Styria, Austria. A video shot from a drone in 4K tells about Styria. In this video review, you will see the beauties of mountain nature and Renaissance buildings from a bird's eye view.

general information
The Austrian state of Styria is the second largest in the whole country. It is located in the basin of the Mur River, a tributary of the Drava River, in the southeast of the country. Among the Bohemian people, the region is known as the birthplace of the famous actor Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, the main wealth of Styria is the centuries-old historical buildings and virgin nature. The region shares a land border with Slovenia to the south.

Capital
The administrative center of the region is the second largest city in Austria, Graz. The city is distinguished by a highly developed industry: mechanical engineering, brewing, chemical and others. Throughout southeastern Europe, the international fair held in the capital is especially appreciated, which is an important industrial and commercial event.

Nature
All the symbols of Austria have gathered in the beautiful landscape of the region: the bare slopes of the Alps shrouded in dense forest, greenish meadows with numerous cows and clear blue lakes bathed in an abundance of sunlight. Virgin beautiful places are located mainly in the south of the region, where agriculture flourishes. In the north, industrial events and ski resorts are located.

Main cities: Graz, Weiz, Hartberg, Leibnitz
Graz is located on the river Mur. The city is quite sunny and protected from the winds by the surrounding Alps. The capital of the region has an important European historical center, which is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Most of the historical buildings of the city are made in Italian architectural styles.
On the Weizbach River, 30 km from the capital, lies another large Austrian city, Weiz. Its history began in the distant 12th century, however, the impetus for its development was the laying of the railway in the second half of the 19th century. In terms of architecture, the city harmoniously combines old Renaissance buildings and modern buildings.
Not far from the capital, you can find the town of Hartberg, although it is difficult to call it a full-fledged city - the population here is only 6.5 thousand Austrians. But on its territory there are the remains of real Roman buildings, an atmospheric pedestrian center and a mysterious castle.
Between the rivers Mur and Sulm lies the graceful city of Leibnitz. It was once believed that it got its name in honor of the German mathematician Gottfried von Leibniz, however, this is not the case. In the 6th century, the Slavs settled on the territory, who called it Lipnizza - Linden Regions (probably, these types of trees grew on the area). Now the city is known for its vineyards, and in the last century it has also become a kind of Mecca for all jazz lovers. Recently, a vote was held in Austria, during which the inhabitants of the country chose the most beautiful city in the country, in their opinion. 20% of those who voted chose Leibniz, which made him the winner of the competition.

What to see?
You should definitely go to Hallstatt, where you can not only look at the magical atmosphere of an Austrian village lost among lakes and the Alps, but also see the famous Salzkammergut - the oldest salt mines dating back to the second millennium BC. e.
You can touch the natural heritage in Lurgrotta. These are large-scale karst caves 25 km from the capital of the earth. Now everything is arranged there for tourists to visit: paths, bridges and electricity.
Along the valley of the Enns River lies the large Gesuse National Park. On its territory you can find picturesque landscapes, among which a large number of rare representatives of fauna and flora live and grow. The famous Benedictine monastery Admont with a large book depository is also located there.

sights
In Graz, you can find the Mausoleum - a complex consisting of the Church of St. Catherine and the tomb of Ferdinand II. Near it are the Cathedral and the Burg fortress.
In the heart of the capital is the City Hall, made in the style of classicism. By the way, during the day you can buy souvenirs and national symbols in numerous shops around it.
Bernbach is famous for its Glass Museum, where you can not only see unique examples of glass household items, but also buy something as a souvenir.
Eggenberg Palace is a striking example of Renaissance architecture. On its territory is the oldest Art Museum of Graz.
On an area of 7 hectares lay the sculpture park of Graz. Exhibits of not only Austrian, but also international masters gathered there.

Travel Austria: The Mountain Peaks of Eastern Styria

After my early morning arrival in my home town of Weiz in eastern Austria and a few hours of sleep, my brother, sister-in-law and I took our first stroll through town on June 4, 2010. We sat down on one of the squares that is framed by a number of outdoor terraces where the locals congregate after shopping.

Following a hearty lunch prepared by my brother, a consummate chef, he suggested that we drive up to the Sommeralm, a high-altitude mountain pasture region that is part of the biggest Alpine meadow system in Europe. The area is used as grazing lands for cows and steers which produce the region's popular Almenland beef. In addition, it is a popular hiking, skiing and recreational destination for visitors from near and far.

Once we had reached the high-altitude plateau we hiked up further on the Hochlantsch mountain, which, at an altitude of 1722 metres above sea level, offers a phenomenal view of the surrounding Alpine mountain chains in the northern part of Styria.

In the evening we went for an outing in the old part of Weiz where the city had organized an event called the Altstadtrennen, a professional bicycle race through the old part of town. After 40 exciting laps through town the winner of the professional racers had been determined and an official trophy award celebrated the winners of the different events. The day was capped off with an outdoor festival and live music downtown.
