Melbourne Day Trips: Mt Lofty, Warrandyte State Park

Mt Lofty is located in Melbourne's north-east, approximately 42km from the CBD.

One car park is located at Wittons Reserve, Wonga Park; while another car park is located on Lower Homestead Road, Wonga Park.

There is a man made walking track, that can get muddy when wet.

The walking track (from Wittons Reserve) takes you along the Yarra River and then it climbs to the summit of Mount Lofty.

The climb is strenuous.

If you would like to go directly to the summit without the lengthy walk, the Lower Homestead Road access point might be easier (though, still involves a hill climb).

GOLD!! Warrandyte State Park - Gold Heritage Walk (A Brief Visual Tour) [Fourth Hill, Warrandyte]

Warrandyte State Park - Gold Heritage Walk (A Brief Visual Tour). Located about 30 mins East of Melbourne towards the Yarra Valley
A reasonably easy bush and track walk that could be done in 40 mins but we saw enough interesting sites and relics that it ended up being a 6km, 2 hour trek. The whole area is covered in old gold diggings.
This video shows the mines of the are along with the Miner's Hut, Mine Shafts, Diggings & the monument marking the area where the first gold was found in Victoria that sparked the Gold Rush of the Mid 19th century.
There is a lot of info online if you go to the following site;

Warrandyte State Park Melbourne - Victoria

Long Drive to Warrandyte State Park just want to see one wild Australian Duck.
WARRANDYTE STATE PARK is a state park, located in Warrandyte, east of Melbourne, Victoria on the banks of the YARRA RIVER and surroundings. The park comprises 586 hectares of remnant bushland in various locations throughout Warrandyte and Wonga Park around Pound Bend, Fourth Hill, Black Flat, Yarra Brae and various other locations in the area. It hosts many significant geographical, environmental, archaeological and historical sites, such as the site of the first gold discovery in Victoria in 1851 and preserves the sites of former gold mines and tunnels. It is a popular destination for school and community groups and is frequented by local bush walkers and hikers.
Land now occupied by the park was initially occupied by Indigenous Australians of the Wurundjeri nation. After European settlement, gold was discovered in Warrandyte, and the area was mined for a number of years. Frequent clearing had at one stage removed all the vegetation in the area, and bushfires have erased much of the recent human architectural history of the area. However, they have ensured the health of the bushland and reduced the impact of human settlements, enabling the vegetation to recover throughout the 20th century. The major threats to the park's ecology are introduced species of flora and fauna such as foxes, rabbits, dogs and cats. Being located close to suburban settlements, backburning is regularly undertaken within the park to minimise risk of bushfires.

Warrandyte River Reserve

Warrandyte is located within the City of Manningham local, 24 km north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District.

A Wurundjeri dreamtime story tells of a great eagle; who once gazed down upon his people from the star Altair and saw their wrong doing. Awaiting their return, with a mighty crash of thunder, he hurled down a star to destroy them. Where the star struck created a gorge in which much of the town today is located. Bunjil's people remembered the spot, and referred to it as Warrandyte, speculated to mean that which is thrown.

Today, the Warrandyte town is a popular tourist spot and abounds with galleries, craft shops, restaurants, coffee shops and historical places of interest. The Warrandyte Market is held on the first Saturday of each month (except in January) adjacent the Yarra River at Stiggants Reserve in Yarra St.
