Lauterbrunnen | Magical land of Switzerland ????????| Winter ❄️

Lauterbrunnen is situated in one of the most impressive trough valleys in the Alps, between gigantic rock faces and mountain peaks. With its 72 thundering waterfalls, secluded valleys, colourful alpine meadows and lonely mountain inns, the Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of the biggest nature conservation areas in Switzerland.
The very name ‘Lauter Brunnen’ (‘many fountains’) suggests the magnificence of this landscape. There are 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, the most famous being the Staubbach Falls. Plunging almost 300 metres from an overhanging rock face, they are one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe. In 1779, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the valley, and was inspired by the roaring waters to write his well-known poem ‘Spirit song over the waters’

Another deafening natural phenomenon are the Trümmelbach Falls in the ‘Black Monk’ mountain, hidden behind mighty rock faces. Up to 20,000 litres of water per second cascade over the ten glacier falls from a total height of about 200 metres. This spectacle can only be reached in summer by tunnel lift.

Winter

The expansive ski regions of Wengen-Kleine Scheidegg and Mürren-Schilthorn are quickly reached by mountain railway. There are 45 transport facilities altogether in the Jungfrau region as well as 213 km of piste, fun parks, 100 km of winter hiking trails and 50 km of toboggan run. The Lauterbrunnen Valley also boasts plenty of cross-country ski trails.
Summer

The valley town of Lauterbrunnen (795 m) is the starting point for some of the best known excursion destinations in the Jungfrau region. A rack railway links Lauterbrunnen with the sunny terrace of Wengen on the eastern flank of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the Kleinen Scheidegg, the station where you change trains for the onward journey to the Jungfraujoch.

On the opposite side of the valley is the holiday resort of Mürren, accessible from Lauterbrunnen and Stechelberg. The cableway from Stechelberg continues to the peak of the Schilthorn at 2971 m, famous for being the setting where the 007 classic, ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ was filmed.

A few kilometres further up the valley from Lauterbrunnen, accessible along a narrow mountain road, is the peaceful little mountain village of Isenfluh, perched on a steep rock terrace at 1024 m, and starting point for walks in the romantic Saustal and further to Mürren and the Lobhorn mountains.

Public Transportation & free WiFi in Switzerland, a guide to master your trip

Nov 2023: It started with a failure. I was unable to buy a ticket on one of the machines. I asked friends and their answer was “I don't know, I have a monthly pass”. I did not accept that a machine dominated my faith. So here we go, “Machines, we control your buttons!” And this is the guide on how it's done.
A similar story with free WiFi, all the locals I know have a data plan. The answer I got was There is no free WiFi in Switzerland. No panic, I have a few examples that will get you going. Most important, there is free WiFi at the airport and it worked for me.

Hi, my name is Phil from the german travel blog Today I'm gonna take you to Zurich, which is the capital of the canton of Zurich in Switzerland but not of Switzerland itself, which has no capital city at all.

The city of Zurich has approximately 400,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in Switzerland and has a population density of approximately 4300 inhabitants per square kilometer. Zurich is the most important economic, scientific and social center of Switzerland. The city lies in the eastern Swiss Plateau, on the Lake Zurich. Its inhabitants are called Zürcher.

For years, Zurich is one of the cities with the highest quality of life and listed the highest cost of living simultaneously. Since 2012, Zurich is regarded as the most expensive city in the world, followed by Tokyo and Geneva.

With its main railway station, the largest station in Switzerland , and the airport, the city of Zurich is a continental transportation hub and thanks to the local big banks (including UBS and Credit Suisse ) and insurances (Zurich Insurance Group and Swiss Re) an international financial center and the largest financial center Switzerland, followed by Geneva and Lugano. Despite the relatively small population Zurich is therefore considered one of the world's cities. Above average number of media companies , including Swiss radio and television, have their headquarters here Thanks to its location on Lake Zurich and its well-preserved medieval center and a wide range of cultural attractions and nightlife, it is also a center of Swiss Tourism.

Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Filmed in June 2019

Sony rx 100 v

Wikipedia:
Lauterbrunnen is a village and a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

The municipality comprises the major Lauterbrunnen Valley (German: Lauterbrunnental), the Soustal, the Sefinental, the upper Lauterbrunnen Valley with Untersteinberg including several glaciers, such as the Tschingelfirn and the Rottalgletscher, many Alpine meadows and peaks, such as Schilthorn, Bietenhorn, Schwarzmönch, and Silberhorn, and finally the villages Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Mürren, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg, and Isenfluh, and several hamlets. The population of the village Lauterbrunnen is less than that of Wengen, but larger than that of the others.

Lauterbrunnen was first mentioned in 1240 as in claro fonte, a Romance language place name meaning clear spring.[citation needed] By 1253, it was known to German speakers as Liuterbrunnon; the town had an alternate spelling of Luterbrunnen by 1268.[3] While the meaning of brunnen is undoubtedly spring or fountain, there is some dispute about the meaning of lauter. Some translate it as clear, clean or bright (which compares to the earlier Romance language meaning of the place mentioned above), while others translate it as many or louder. A local explanation is that the name Lauterbrunnen means many springs, using a modern meaning of the word lauter in German; however, this could be an example of a folk etymology.

Lauterbrunnen is first mentioned in 1240 as in claro fonte. In 1304 it was mentioned as Luterbrunnen.[3]

The oldest trace of a settlement in the area is a single Roman coin which was discovered in the Blumental.

When the Lauterbrunnen Valley first appears in the historic record, during the 13th century, it was owned by the Freiherr of Wädenswil. In 1240 the Freiherr of Wädenswil sold the Sefinen Valley to Interlaken Monastery. Over the following century, the Monastery and other local lords began to expand their power in the Lauterbrunnen and neighboring valleys. However, around 1300, the Lord of Turn began to settle his Walser speaking people in the nearby Lötschen Valley and into the highlands of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. By 1346, the Walser villages of Lauterbrunnen, Gimmelwald, Mürren, Sichellauenen and Trachsellauenen all had village governments and a certain amount of independence from the Monastery. Three years later, much of the Bernese Oberland unsuccessfully rose up against Monastery. When the Monastery suppressed the rebellion, the Walser villages bore the brunt of the Monastery's wrath.[3]

By the 15th century, the villages of the valley were part of the large parish of Gsteig bei Interlaken (now part of Gsteigwiler). In 1487-88 the villagers in Lauterbrunnen built a filial church of the parish. In 1506, the parish appointed a full-time priest for Lauterbrunnen. In 1528, the city of Bern adopted the new faith of the Protestant Reformation and began imposing it on the Bernese Oberland. Lauterbrunnen joined many other villages and the Monastery in an unsuccessful rebellion against the new faith. After Bern imposed its will on the Oberland, they secularized the Monastery and annexed all the Monastery lands. Lauterbrunnen became the center of a new Reformed parish.[3]

Mines were built in the Trachsellauenen area in the upper valley beginning in the late 16th century. An iron smelter was built in Zweilütschinen (now part of Gündlischwand) in 1715 to process the iron ore from Trachsellauenen. However most of the money from the mines went to the noble landowners. The villagers remained very poor. In the 17th and 18th centuries the poverty was so widespread that many of the villagers joined mercenary regiments or emigrated. A majority of the emigrants moved to the Carolinas in the United States. Beginning in the late 18th century, foreign mountain climbers began to use Lauterbrunnen as a starting point for their expeditions into the nearby Alps. Initially the climbers stayed in the village rectory. However, as Lauterbrunnen's fame grew and with the completion of a road from Interlaken in 1834 and the 1890 Bernese Oberland Railway, more hotels were needed for tourists. As new hotels were built, other tourist infrastructure was also built in the village. They built cable cars to Mürren in 1891 and to Wengen in 1893. But the most significant piece of infrastructure was the Jungfrau railway which was built in 1912. The Jungfrau rack railway runs 9 km (5.6 mi) from Kleine Scheidegg to the highest railway station in Europe at Jungfraujoch. The railway runs almost entirely within a tunnel built into the Eiger and Mönch mountains and contains two stations in the middle of the tunnel, where passengers can disembark to observe the neighboring mountains through windows built into the mountainside. In 1909 the English brothers Walter and Arnold Lunn popularized skiing, curling and bobsledding at Lauterbrunnen.

Insight 4: How can I travel like a local when I’m in Switzerland?

CHUR - THE OLDEST CITY IN SWITZERLAND - Walking Tour, February 2023 (4K)

With a quick and convenient bus at the front door of the hotel in Chur West, it was only a few minutes before arriving in the Old Town to walk around the winding and sometimes narrow cobblestone back streets and alleys.

Chur (pronounced more like Core), has a history of settlement dating back over 5,000 years.

Archaeological evidence of settlement at the site, goes back as far as the Pfyn culture (3900-3500 BC). Remains and objects from the Bronze and Iron Ages have also been found in the eastern sector of the current city's centre. These include Bronze Age Urnfield and Laugen-Melaun settlements from 1300 to 800 BC and Iron Age settlements from 500 to 300 BC.

The Roman Empire conquered the area that then came to be known as the Roman province of Raetia in 15 BC. Under emperor Diocletian (late 3rd century AD), the existing settlement of Curia Raetorum (later Chur) was made the capital of the newly established province of Raetia prima.

One thing you must try when visiting is the Hot Roasted Chestnuts, they were amazing.

The Old Town area is totally Car Free (delivery vehicles excluded) which makes walking around that little bit more enjoyable.

Filmed February, 2023.

All filmed on the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max using PolarPro Filters & the LiteChaser Pro Cage System.
