I'll be the first to admit that I knew absolutely nothing about Banja Luka before we arrived. We booked our flight without having any idea what we'd see or do when we arrived, but that's the beautiful thing about travel. You jump into the unknown & come out better for it. Come with us as we explore the things to do in Banja Luka!
We kicked off with some Fabricka Coffee and I don’t believe this coffee shop was specifically local, but it was the only one that I could find that was open today and not a cafe LOL.
One of the first things you’ll see when you google Banja Luka is a picture of Christ The Savior Orthodox Cathedral. It’s the most famous structure in the city and serves as the center of town. It was originally built in 1929 but was partially destroyed in 1941 by bombings during WW2. The present cathedral is architecturally identical to the original and was completed in 2004.
While you’re nearby also be sure to take a peak at the President of the Republic of Srpska’s House. It’s right across from the cathedral and is pretty clearly an important building based on the security presence.
Right in the center of town is Gospodska Street. It’s the oldest and busiest street in Banja Luka & has a host of clothing, jewelry, and other various shops. Gospodska translates to Gentleman’s which has been around since 1878, but the actual name of the street is Veselin Maslesa Street.
For lunch we picked Banjalučki Splav, or Banja Luka Raft, for lunch because you can’t beat this location. It’s right on the Vrbas River and looks so cool from the City Bridge so we figured we’d come down here to try and get some Ćevapi. Ćevapi is the national dish of both Bosnia & Herzegovina as well as Serbia, and the Bosnian version is made of two different types of minced beef meat.
Back across the Vrbas River is a place called Gradska Tržnica, which translates to City Market. This place is MASSIVE and reminds me of what I would imagine a mall would’ve felt like before the modern version of malls existed. You can basically get anything you could ever need here from fruits & veggies, to hand-made trinkets, to full-on wardrobes.
Right between the Banja Luka Raft & City Market is the Kastel Fortress. It’s medieval but it’s situated on the site of previous fortifications that go back to Roman and even pre-Roman times, making it the oldest historical monument in the city. The Kastel Fortress is widely considered the most important symbol and the stone heart of the city of Banja Luka.
One really interesting detail about Bosnia is it’s a melting pot of cultures. We’ve already seen a Serbian Orthodox cathedral, and now we’re stopping over at the Ferhat Pasha Mosque. This classic Ottoman mosque was built back in 1579 and stood for almost 400 years before being destroyed during the Bosnian War between 1992 and 1995.
Dinner was at a restaurant called Kod Brke which translates to At The Mustache. It’s one of the more popular restaurants in town, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to break the bank eating here for a night. The prices for food are very reasonable and they’ve got a great mix of local, as well as Italian dishes to choose from.
We’re ended the day at a place called Master Craft Brewery. The menu has a great selection of local beers, which includes IPAs which are our favorites!!

Banja Luka (Serbian Cyrillic: Бања Лука), or Banjaluka (Serbian Cyrillic: Бањалука), is the largest city and the de facto capital of the Republika Srpska entity and the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the capital Sarajevo. Traditionally, it has been the centre of the Krajina region, located in the northwestern part of the country. It is home of the University of Banja Luka as well as numerous state and entity institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city lies on the River Vrbas and is well known in the countries of the former Yugoslavia for being full of tree-lined avenues, boulevards, gardens and parks. According to the 2013 census, Banja Luka has 199,191 inhabitants.
The history of inhabitation of the area of Banja Luka dates back to ancient times. There is a substantial evidence of the Roman presence in the region during the first few centuries A.D., including an old fort Kastel (Latin: Castra) in the centre of the city. The area of Banja Luka was entirely in the kingdom of Illyria and then a part of the Roman province of Illyricum, which split into provinces of Pannonia and Dalmatia of which Castra became a part. Ancient Illyrian maps call the settlement in Banja Luka's present day location as Ad Ladios, a settlement located on the river Vrbas.
Banja Luka fell to the Ottomans in 1527. It became the seat of the Sanjak of Bosnia some time prior to 1554, until 1580 when the Bosnia Eyalet was established. Bosnian beylerbeys were seated in Banja Luka until 1639. Ferhad Pasha Sokolović, a relative of Grand Vizier Mehmed-pasha Sokolović, had upon his return to Bosnia in 1574, begun the building of over 200 buildings ranging from artisan and sales shops to wheat warehouses, baths and mosques. Among more important commissions were the Ferhadija and Arnaudija mosques during which construction a plumbing infrastructure was laid that served surrounding residential areas. This stimulated the economic and urban development of Banja Luka, which soon became one of the leading commercial and political centres in Bosnia. It was also sanjak centre in Bosna Eyalet.
In 1688, the city was burned down by the Austrian army, but it quickly recovered. Later periodic intrusions by the Austrian army stimulated military developments in Banja Luka, which made it into a strategic military centre. Orthodox churches and monasteries near Banja Luka were built in the 19th century.
Due to its long history, Banja Luka is rich in culture. The Museum of Republika Srpska inherited the Ethnographic Museum established in 1930, and broadened its setting with collections of archeology, history, art history and nature. The Museum of Modern Art of Republika Srpska, also called MSURS, the Museum of Contemporary Art, displays exhibitions of noticed artists, both domestic and worldwide known, such as Damien Hirst and Grayson Perry . Banja Luka is also the home of the National Theatre and National Library, both dating from the first half of the 20th century, and of numerous other theatres. The headquarters of the Archives of Republika Srpska is situated in the building known as Carska kuća or Imperial House, built around 1880. It has been in continuous public use longer than any other structure in Banja Luka.
One of the most famous cultural sites in Banja Luka is the cultural centre of Banski Dvor (Halls of the Ban), built in the 1930s as the residence for the Bans of the Vrbas Banovina.[citation needed] It is a representative building in the very centre of the city housing the National Assembly along with a concert hall, gallery, state television, and a restaurant. Most of the main cultural and political events nowadays take place in the building. The relatively poorly preserved Kastel Fortress is found in the city centre. This mediaeval castle is one of Banja Luka's main attractions. Located on the left bank of the Vrbas river, it gives a specific charm to the city. During the summer, music concerts take place in the fortress.
The natural beauties of the surrounding area guarantee the city of Banja Luka a good position in tourism. Banja Luka has a number of hotels, one of the best being Hotel Cezar Banja Luka. One of the hotels right on the Vrbas river's bank is the Marriott. The city and surrounding area boast a number of popular tourist attractions. Among the most famous are the pools, thermal springs, and spas in the region. Due to its parks and over 10 000 trees Banja Luka was once nicknamed the Green City. The area is popular among nature lovers, while the city centre is attractive to tourists due to its historical structures and many restaurants. Other attractions of Banja Luka are the Banj Hill and a waterfall of the Vrbas river near Krupa. Rafting on the Vrbas river is currently becoming popular among the local tourists. There is fishing, rock climbing and hiking along the canyon of the Vrbas between Banja Luka and Jajce, and there is plenty of accommodation for visitors.

1. Travnik
Bisected by the babbling Lasva River as it flows through the central mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the pretty mid-sized town of Travnik does well to balance its interesting past as the capital and stronghold of the erstwhile viziers of this old Ottoman sub-region and modern day adventure sports and outdoorsy draws. The first aspect manifests in a curious array of traditional eastern-style edifices and monuments, two Ottoman clock towers (unique throughout the country) and a handsome 15th-century old town heart.
2. Jahorina
Home to the best-loved ski field in all of Bosnia and former host of the Winter Olympics, Jahorina draws snow lovers and summertime hikers alike to its high perch amidst the pine-spotted upper levels of the Dinaric Alps. Of course it’s the lifts and pistes here that take centre stage for most travelers, with no fewer than 10 chairs and a planned gondola serving 30 kilometers of groomed alpine runs.
3. Sarajevo
A bustling, bubbling and surprising European capital that’s now heading full throttle into the modern age, Sarajevo has all but shed its former reputation as a ravaged war zone. Memorials to the fallen and killed from the tumultuous conflicts of the 1990s do still fringe the city’s districts, but there’s certainly a newfound confidence and panache flowing through the central streets; one that embodies a real defiance for the atrocities of war.
4. Trebinje
One of the real gems of the Republika Srpska side of Bosnia Herzegovina, Trebinje reflects beautifully against the waters of the winding Trebisnjica River as it cuts through the heart of the city’s historic centre; a medley of elegant Ottoman rises and original eastern facades that was constructed largely in the 18th century. There’s also the pretty arched bridge of Arslanagic to see on the edge of town, along with a gorgeous Serbian Orthodox cathedral on the ridges above.
5. Stolac
Hemmed in by the grass-green and craggy ridges of the Herzegovina Humina, Stolac is considered by many to be single most beautiful town in the country. Amidst its enchanting old heart, the spot fuses layer after layer of unique architectural and cultural heritage, going from the crumbling remnants of Roman Diluntum that stood here in the 3rd century to the elegance of Austro-Hungarian Baroque.
6. Mostar
One of the undisputed jewels of the entire Balkan Peninsula, Mostar oozes Bosnian history from each of its Byzantine cracks, Slavic crevices and Ottoman facades. Razed and razed again by both earthquake and war, Banja Luka – the largely unknown capital of the Republika Srpska region of Bosnia and Herzegovina – retains little of the historic Ottoman and Slavic richness it once exuded, save a few reconstructed gems like the Cathedral of Saint Bonaventure and rebuilt, erstwhile-UNESCO Ferhat-Pasha Mosque. Putujući svijetom i obišavši oko 60 zemalja, vidio sam zaista toliko toga lijepog. Bio sam u mom Rio de Žaneiru i toj Južnoj Americi koja je za mene bila i uvijek će biti omiljeni kontinent na svijetu. Neko vrijem sam putovao i po Aziji. Stopao po Mjanmaru, Laosu i Bornee, volontirao svojevremeno u sirotištu u Africi, a bio sam čak i u Černobilu. Da li je do radijacije ili nečega drugog, ali nekako nakon svega toga i nakon svih tih putovanja, uvijek se obradujem povratku kući u svoju Banjaluku. In the beginning when I talk about Bošniaks in NP, I meant to say they are a culturally Bosnian diaspora in terms of religion/history/ancestry like Bosnian, but not from actual Bosnia--as being Bosnian is a noun representing one's nationality--whereas Bošniak is an ethnic/religious/cultural group with shared history. ..............So I hope that makes sense. ......................Oh... it still doesn't make sense? What to Do in Banja Luka, Bosnia & Herzegovina

David takes us around to discover what to do in Banja Luka, the second largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this episode we'll show you what to see and where to eat in Banja Luka should you ever make it to the central northern region of this fascinating country.
David opens up with a brief history of the city from the banks of the Vrbas River near the Kastel, where he explains all the different cultures that have resided Banja Luka throughout the centuries. The first stop on David's Banja Luka tour is Gospodska Street, the city's main pedestrian boulevard lined with neo-Rennaissance and art nouveau buildings. Along Gospodska Street there are shops, banks, sidewalk cafes and restaurants.
Next is the Church of Christ the Savior, a Serbian Orthodox church in downtown Banja Luka. What stands today is a reconstruction of the original church built in 1929 and destroyed during WWII. This one was built in 2004 and features a beautiful bell/ clock tower and golden domes that are typical of eastern orthodox churches. If you come to Banja Luka don't miss visiting the Central Market, a covered market where vendors sell everything from vegetables and clothing, to specialty cheeses and household items. Everything is so fresh and organic! The Central Market open every day and is free to enter. The best time to come is in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
If you've been traveling in Bosnia for a while, you may have tried Ćevapčići (pronounced che-vap-chee-chee). These oblong-shaped grilled minced meatballs are the undisputed kings of Bosnian fast foods. You can find them throughout the Balkans; an influence left behind by the Ottomans. In Banja Luka Ćevapčići are made a little differently than the rest of the country - they are patties instead of shaped like sausages. A great place to try them is Kod Muje restaurant. From the outside, Kod Muje looks like a wooden cabin. Sit outside in the shaded terrace under one of the umbrellas like David did to enjoy the fresh air with your meal. This is a cheap and very satisfying meal.
The next restaurant David visits is the only restaurant in the Kastel fortress, Kazamat Restaurant. It has a beautiful setting along the Vrbas River, which is why reserving a table outside is highly recommended! For the last 30 years they've specialized in traditional Serbian food like fresh salads and grilled meats. The inside of Kazamat Restaurant is a little dark, but decorated with medieval memorabilia that's worth having a look. One of David's top restaurant picks for Bosnia!
According to everyone we spoke with, Mala Stanica is the best restaurant in Banja Luka, so David knew he had to try it! What makes Mala Stanica special is its location within the 19th century train station. This historically and architecturally significant building is a cultural icon of Banja Luka. Mala Stanica specializes in gourmet fusion cuisine, and they believe in slow cooking their foods to optimize the flavors. David enjoyed a memorable tasting menu of the house specialties with sampling from the extensive wine list (100+ wines!) You cannot leave until you've had the chocolate soufflé, their most popular dessert. TO-DIE-FOR!

Travnik Castle, locally known as Stari Grad Castle (old town castle), is a medieval town-fortress complex in the town of Travnik, Central Bosnia Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Dating back to pre-Ottoman Bosnia[3] when the former Christian Kingdom ruled the region, there is no historical data as to the construction date of the Medieval fortress. However, the construction type and other characteristics indicate that it was built sometime in the second half of the 14th century or in the first half of the 15th century.[4] As a result, It was probably built during the time of the Bosnian Kings Tvrtko II or Ostoja, and then rebuilt and expanded during the time of Stephen Thomas. The Travnik fortress was erected before the arrival of the Ottoman Turks for the purpose of defence as the Ottomans penetrated deeper into Bosnia. Travnik itself was one of a number of fortified towns in the region built for this purpose but was built too late to stem the Ottoman advance.
The Pliva Waterfall (Serbian Cyrillic: Пливски водопад) is located by the town of Jajce, in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the river Pliva meets the river Vrbas. The waterfall is a large tufa, also known as travertine barrier, making over 22 meters cascade on the Pliva river, in a narrow karstic zone, which follows the Pliva course, retracted into a flysh and limestone contact zone. It was 30 meters high, but after an earthquake during the Bosnian war and attacks on the power plant further up the river, the area was flooded and now the waterfall is 22 meters high.
The old Jajce walled city core, including the waterfall, and other individual sites outside the walled city perimeter, such as the Jajce Mithraeum, is designated as The natural and architectural ensemble of Jajce and proposed for inscription into the UNESCO's World Heritage Site list. The bid for inscription is currently placed on the UNESCO Tentative list.
Jajce (Serbian Cyrillic: Јајце) Jajce is a small city in Bosnia & Herzegovina, central not only geographically but also culturally. Throughout Bosnia’s long history, Jajce has been the home of medieval kings, Ottoman governors, and a range of different ethnic groups, as well as being one of President Tito’s earliest Communist strongholds. Jajce has been so far undiscovered by tourists, although UNESCO has recently been investing in renovating the city’s historical areas,Town and municipality located in the Central Bosnia Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the 2013 census, the town has a population of 7,172 inhabitants, with 27,258 inhabitants in the municipality, It is situated in the region of Bosanska Krajina, on the crossroads between Banja Luka, Mrkonjić Grad and Donji Vakuf, on the confluence of the rivers Pliva and Vrbas.

Found Secret Thermal Pools In BANJA LUKA | Republika Srpska
I saw some thermal pools from the bus window on the way into the city of Banja Luka - The capital city of the Republika Srpska. I knew we had to visit them they looked incredible so we set off early one morning on a regrettable 1.5 hour walk in the hot sun to the handmade thermal baths.
It was super busy and a real local spot it seemed we had a well good time it was worth the effort. The nature in Republika Srpska & Bosnia & Herzegovina is amazing.
Later in the day we checked out Banja Luka city center which was stunning, and ended the day with some typical Banja Luka style cevapi.
