A walking tour in Leiden. A city and municipality in the province of South Holland, Netherlands. The municipality of Leiden has a population of 119,713. The city's suburbs are Oegstgeest, Leiderdorp, Voorschoten and Zoeterwoude.
HOLLAND: De Horsten estate, Wassenaar 4K
With its 450 hectares, the royal estate De Horsten is one of the largest estates of South-Holland. It consists of three estates: Ter Horst, Raephorst and Eikenhorst. It is located at the periphery of Wassenaar (not far from The Hague).
Eikenhorst is not accessible to the public, but one can go for lovely walks in the other parts of the park. There are several signposted walking routes. Admission tickets can be bought at the ticket machine.
The founder of the estate De Horsten was Prince Frederik of the Netherlands (1797-1881). In 1838 he bought the sites Ter Horst and Raaphorst. Eikenhorst was acquired in 1845. Around 1865, the renowned landscape gardener Eduard Petzold was commissioned to merge the sites into one estate, while preserving the characteristics of the individual sites.
After the death of Prince Frederik, his daughter Princess Marie de Horsten inherited the estate. In 1903 the estate was purchased by Queen Wilhelmina. It has remained in the hands of the royal family ever since. In November 2017, Princess Beatrix donated the property to King Willem-Alexander.
Little remains of the original buildings. The castles Raephorst and Ter Horst and the original country house Eikenhorst have disappeared. However, the steward's house and a hunting lodge remain. The former royal hunting lodge (1863) now functions as a tea house: 'Theepaviljoen De Horsten'.

The SERINGENBERG is an artificial hill of twenty meters high, completely covered with lilacs.
The hill dates from the period after 1791-1792, when Twent was the owner of Raaphorst. Mr. Adriaan Pieter Twent was a wealthy mayor from Gouda, who at the end of the eighteenth century had deliberately sought the surroundings of The Hague to devote himself to national politics. He came up with the idea to build a sand hill on the edge of the old beach wall, with a view point and a winding path to the top. Former Queen Wilhelmina got inspiration for her paintings here.
The hill was planted with purple lilacs of the kind that also smell good. If one now climb the lilac mountain via the winding path, partly paved with old paving stones, you can see from the lilac bushes that they are very old.
The undersides of the shrubs are usually bare and tortuous in shape, because the leaves and flowers always seek out the light. Every year we have to wait and see how the mountain looks. The amount of frost, sun and precipitation in the spring influence the flowering. Usually flowering starts in May and lasts about 14 days.

Many important scientific discoveries have been made here, giving rise to Leiden's motto: ‘City of Discoveries’. The city houses Leiden University, the oldest university of the Netherlands, and Leiden University Medical Center. Leiden University is one of Europe's top universities, with thirteen Nobel Prize winners. It is a member of the League of European Research Universities and positioned highly in all international academic rankings. It is twinned with Oxford, the location of the United Kingdom's oldest university. Leiden University and Leiden University of Applied Sciences (Leidse Hogeschool) together have around 35,000 students. Modern scientific medical research and teaching started in the early 18th century in Leiden with Boerhaave.
Leiden is a city with a rich cultural heritage, not only in science, but also in the arts. One of the world's most famous painters, Rembrandt, was born and educated in Leiden. Other famous Leiden painters include Lucas van Leyden, Jan van Goyen and Jan Steen.

Leiden was formed on an artificial hill (today called the Burcht van Leiden) at the confluence of the rivers Oude and Nieuwe Rijn (Old and New Rhine). In the oldest reference to this, from circa 860, the settlement was called Leithon. The name is said to be from Germanic *leitha- canal in dative pluralis, thus meaning at the canals.
Canal is actually not the completely proper word. A leitha (later lede) was a human-modified natural river, partly natural, partly artificial.
Leiden has in the past erroneously been associated with the Roman outpost Lugdunum Batavorum. This particular castellum was thought to be located at the Burcht of Leiden, and the city's name was thought to be derived from the Latin name Lugdunum. However the castellum was in fact closer to the town of Katwijk, whereas the Roman settlement near modern-day Leiden was called Matilo.
Leiden was sacked in 1047 by Emperor Henry III. Early 13th century, Ada, Countess of Holland took refuge here when she was fighting in a civil war against her uncle, William I, Count of Holland. He besieged the stronghold and captured Ada.
Leiden received city rights in 1266. In 1389, its population had grown to about 4,000 persons.

The city's biggest and most popular annual festival is celebrated on 3 October and is called simply 3 Oktober. The people of Leiden celebrate the end of the Spanish siege of 1574.
It typically takes place over the course of two to three days and includes parades, a hutspot feast, historical reenactments, a funfair and other events. Since 2006, the city has also hosted the annual Leiden International Film Festival.
Leiden has important functions as a shopping and trade centre for communities around the city.
The city also houses the Eurotransplant, the international organization responsible for the mediation and allocation of organ donation procedures in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Slovenia. Leiden also houses the headquarters of Airbus, a global pan-European aerospace and defence corporation and a leading defence and military contractor worldwide. The group includes Airbus, the leading manufacturer of commercial aircraft worldwide.

Sexy Party, Voorschoten Paardenmarkt,
Dit jaar vielen de Paardendagen op 29, 30 & 31 juli en konden we weer gaan genieten van een weekend dat geheel in het tekenen van het paard en aanverwante activiteiten zal staan.
Vrijdagavond 29 juli was het zoals gebruikelijk goed toeven in de horecagelegenheden op de Voorstraat.
Zaterdag 30 juli begon vroeg in de ochtend met de traditionele Paardenmarkt op de Voorstraat. En van ’s ochtends negen uur tot het eind van de middag was er een gezellige braderie/jaarmarkt in de Schoolstraat, de Treubstraat en op het Treubplein. Tevens waren er op zaterdag allerlei kinderactiviteiten in het Berkhoutpark georganiseerd.
En u kon zaterdagmiddag een bezoek brengen aan de vermaarde kortebaandraverij op de Van Beethovenlaan.
Zaterdag vroeg in de avond waren er demonstraties paardendressuur op de Voorstraat en kon men touwtrekken met belzen. Later op de avond was er weer volop muziek & entertainment in de Voorstraat.
Op zondagmiddag stond het ringsteken gepland (aanmelden kon via ringsteken@voorschotensepaardendagen.nl) en er waren allerlei kinderactiviteiten in de Voorstraat. Ook vond dan de traditionele seniorenmiddag plaats. Met de ervaring van de laatste zeer warme paardendagen was er dit jaar voor gekozen om deze middag onder de parasols op het terras van Floris V op de Voorstraat te organiseren.
De kermis stond van donderdag 28 tot en met zondag 31 juli op het Burgemeester Van de Haarplein.

Op zondag 10 september 2017 waren er heel wat mooie Oldtimers in Voorschoten te zien, waaronder deze prachtige Bugatti .

Durga Puja in Netherlands #travelandetcetra
