Volendam is a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is well known for its traditional wooden houses, its fishing culture, and its Volendammer clothing.
Volendam was settled in the thirteenth century as a small fishing village. The name Volendam is derived from the Dutch words vollen (meaning full) and dam (meaning dam). This refers to the fact that the village was located at the mouth of a canal that was used to store water for fishing.
Volendam grew rapidly in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as a result of its location on an important trade route between Amsterdam and Zaandam. The town became known for its traditional wooden houses, which were built to withstand the harsh winters in North Holland.
The fishing culture of Volendam also developed during this period. In the early twentieth century, Volendammers began to export their smoked fish around the world. Today, Volendam is still known for its smoked fish products, which include eel, herring, and salmon.
Volendam also has a long tradition of clothing. The Volendammer costume is a type of folk costume that is popular in the Netherlands. It consists of a long dress, a cape, and a hat or cap. The costume is typically worn by women on special occasions such as weddings and christenings.

Stolphoevekerk, Burg. Kolfschotenplein 1. Not open to visitors. The oldest church in Volendam is the wooden Protestant Stolphoevekerk. This National Monument was built in 1658 in the shape of a farmhouse. The lovely little church is still in use.
St. Vincentiuskerk, Kerkepad 1. Open to visitors in the holiday season, otherwise during the weekend. The St. Vincentius church was opened in 1860, after protests from Roman-Catholic worshippers who had been forced for centuries to walk to Edam for their Sunday service.
De Visafslag, Haven 41, (info@devisafslagvolendam.nl),. Open for visits by appointment. The wooden fish auction was built in 1934, but is no longer in use. Now a National Monument, it remains a landmark today, even between the many other wooden houses.
Volendams Museum, Zeestraat 41, (info@volendamsmuseum.nl). 10AM-5PM, only during the holiday season. Historical museum, focusing on the period 1850 -1950, showing traditional costumes and interiors, as well as paintings and other works of art made by artists who visited Volendam. A special mention should be made of the Sigarenbandjeshuisje: over 11 million cigar bands were used to create mosaics on the wall of this room. 3 EUR.
Palingsoundmuseum, Slobbeland 19 (info@smitbokkum.nl) Restaurant Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum houses a small exhibition dedicated to the history of popular music from Volendam, that has been dominating the Dutch charts for more than 40 years.

This lighthouse on the eastern end of the peninsula is one of the best known in the country. This 1839 structure is 16 meters high and is a National Monument. It can be seen from a long distance, and the site itself offers great views of the IJsselmeer.
Marker Museum In this small museum you can see a traditional Marken house as it would have been decorated in the old days. There's traditional clothing on display and a lot of information on the peninsula's history. Not all information is in English, though. The museum is only opened during the tourist season

When you're in Amsterdam, make sure to take a day trip to Volendam and Marken. These two villages are located in the province of North Holland and are known for their traditional Dutch architecture and scenic canals.
In Volendam, be sure to visit the Old Harbor, where you'll find a number of seafood restaurants. You can also check out the Volendam Museum, which showcases the village's history and culture. The town was established in the 13th century on the IJsselmeer. Marken is a small peninsula located in the IJsselmeer, and it is one of the oldest inhabited places in the Netherlands. It was an important center for trade and fishing. 2) Hotel Spaander, famous ancient hotel visited by celebrities like Pierre-Auguste Renoir, kaiser Wilhelm II, Elisabeth Taylor & Muhammad Ali.
3) Cheese Factory, enjoy every bit of Dutch cheese your taste-buds can process

Volendam is a small town just north of Amsterdam counting only 22,000 inhabitants. Volendam was the location of the former harbor of the nearby Edam. Farmers and local fishermen settled there, forming the new community of Vollendam, which literally meant something like 'Filled dam'.
I highly recommend taken one day out of your Holland travel schedule and visit this mesmerizing place.
In the early part of the 20th century it became something of an artists' retreat, with both Picasso and Renoir spending time here. Volendam's traditional costume is one of the best known examples of ancient clothing (klederdracht) in the country. Only a handful of people wear it in their daily lives today, but as the locals have recognized its value for tourism you will probably still run into it here or there.

Welcome in Volendam:
Legend has it that the Volendam coat of arms is a compliment to the beauty of the Volendam girls ! No wonder that a famous singer sang the praise of this characteristic Dutch fishing village in the words: Anyone who wants to see the real beauty of Holland, goes to Volendam. As a result of its completely insulated location, this village preserved its character for six centuries, also because of the tough vitality of the fishermen. The characteristic small houses, which together with the canals and the drawbridges form the most picturesque spots, present the visitor an atmosphere of geniality and romance. Don’t forget to visit the Volendam museum with the ’Sigarenbandjeshuis’, where cigar rings are on display.

Stolphoevekerk, Burg. Kolfschotenplein 1. Not open to visitors. The oldest church in Volendam is the wooden Protestant Stolphoevekerk. This National Monument was built in 1658 in the shape of a farmhouse. The lovely little church is still in use.
St. Vincentiuskerk, Kerkepad 1. Open to visitors in the holiday season, otherwise during the weekend. The St. Vincentius church was opened in 1860, after protests from Roman-Catholic worshippers who had been forced for centuries to walk to Edam for their Sunday service.
De Visafslag, Haven 41, (info@devisafslagvolendam.nl),. Open for visits by appointment. The wooden fish auction was built in 1934, but is no longer in use. Now a National Monument, it remains a landmark today, even between the many other wooden houses.
Volendams Museum, Zeestraat 41, (info@volendamsmuseum.nl). 10AM-5PM, only during the holiday season. Historical museum, focusing on the period 1850 -1950, showing traditional costumes and interiors, as well as paintings and other works of art made by artists who visited Volendam. A special mention should be made of the Sigarenbandjeshuisje: over 11 million cigar bands were used to create mosaics on the wall of this room. 3 EUR.
Palingsoundmuseum, Slobbeland 19 (info@smitbokkum.nl) Restaurant Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum houses a small exhibition dedicated to the history of popular music from Volendam, that has been dominating the Dutch charts for more than 40 years. 1.75 EUR.
