Sarajevo Travel Guide - Bosnia and Herzegovina Fascinating Experience
Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is nestled in a valley, mainly within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but with parts in the Republika Srpska entity. Sarajevo is one of the most historically interesting and varied cities in Europe. It is a place where the Western & Eastern Roman Empire split; where the people of the Roman Catholic west, Eastern Orthodox east and the Ottoman south, met, lived and warred. It has been both an example of historical turbulence and the clash of civilizations, as well as a beacon of hope for peace and tolerance through multi-cultural integration. Sarajevo is not a huge city - 395,133 people live in its urban area, but it is very livable, vibrant and busy. The city is historically famous for its traditional religious diversity, with adherents of Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism coexisting there for centuries.
Sarajevo is a cosmopolitan European capital with a unique Eastern twist that is a delight to visit. The people are very friendly, be they Bosniaks, Croats, or Serb. There is very little crime, and the city ranks as one of the safest in South Eastern Europe. The town is very tourist friendly, especially in the city center.
Four distinct seasons with warm or hot summers and cold winters. Sarajevo is basically on the mountain so winters can be slightly colder here than in other capital cities in the region. You should not be surprised if you see some snow in mid October, but also sometimes in May, although it rarely occurs and stays on the ground for a very short period. Autumn can be cool, but during that period Sarajevo is very foggy and gray with little bit of sunshine.
Sarajevo is close to the center of the triangular shape of Bosnia and Herzegovina in southeastern Europe. Sarajevo city proper consists of four municipalities (or in Bosnian and Croatian: općina, in Serbian: opština): Centar (Center), Novi Grad (New City), Novo Sarajevo (New Sarajevo), and Stari Grad (Old City), while Metropolitan area of Sarajevo (Greater Sarajevo area) includes these and the neighbouring municipalities of Ilidža, Hadžići, Vogošća and Ilijaš.
Sports-related tourism uses the legacy facilities of the 1984 Winter Olympics, especially the skiing facilities on the nearby mountains of Bjelašnica, Igman, Jahorina, Trebević, and Treskavica. Sarajevo's 600 years of history, influenced by both Western and Eastern empires, makes it a tourist attraction with splendid variations. Sarajevo has hosted travellers for centuries, because it was an important trading center during the Ottoman and Austria-Hungarian empires and because was a natural stop for many routes between East and West. Examples of popular destinations in Sarajevo include the Vrelo Bosne park, the Sarajevo cathedral, and the Gazi Husrev-beg's Mosque. Tourism in Sarajevo is chiefly focused on historical, religious, cultural sites and winter sports.
Sarajevo is host to many parks throughout the city and on the outskirts of city. A popular activity among Sarajevo citizens is street chess, usually played at Trg oslobođenja Alija Izetbegović. Veliki Park is the largest green area in the center of Sarajevo. It's nestled between Titova, Koševo, Džidžikovac, Tina Ujevića and Trampina Streets and in the lower part there is a monument dedicated to the Children of Sarajevo. Hastahana is a popular place to relax in the Austro-Hungarian neighborhood of Marijin Dvor. Goat's Bridge, locally known as Kozija Ćuprija, in the Miljacka Canyon is also a popular park destination along the Dariva walkway and river Miljacka. On December 24 of 2012, a park hosting two brass sculptures resembling two mourning mothers was dedicated as the Friendship Park, commemorating over 45 years of friendship between Sarajevo and Baku.
Sarajevo is also famous for its city lookouts; including an observation deck on Avaz Twist Tower, Park Prinčeva restaurant, Vidikovac lookout (Mt. Trebević), Zmajevac lookout and Yellow/White fortresses lookouts (in Vratnik) as well as numerous other rooftops throughout the city (i.e. Alta Shopping Center, BBI Center, Hotel Hecco Deluxe).

Sarajevo rightfully deserves to be called a 'hero city' of the 1990's. Throughout the siege brought upon it by the Bosnian Serbs between 1992 and 1996 the city together with its population has suffered greatly. Today it is fully rebuild and repaired, but some of the war scars can still be seen.

Sarajewo słusznie zasługuje na miano 'miasta bohatera' lat 90-tych. W czasie oblężenia, jakiego dokonali bośniaccy Serbowie w latach 1992-1996, miasto wraz ze swoją ludnością bardzo ucierpiało. Dziś jest w pełni odbudowane i naprawione, ale niektóre blizny wojenne są nadal widoczne.

Meaning in Persian – Turkish – Bosnian (Saray-ovasi – the plains around the palace, Sarajevo planes); Turkih (Saray-Bosna).
Half a millennium ago in Bosnia, a town nestled in the valley below mountain Trebevic, named after either a palace in the fields or the fields around the palace. Bosnian sanjak-bey Isabeg Ishakovic erected his palace on the left bank of the Miljacka River, built a bridge and founded the bazaar.
Sarajevo has always been an intersection of important roads from Eastern to Western Europe, from the Mediterranean basin to Central Europe and vice versa. “This is a city that, in the context of different historical events, has for centuries been a shelter and crossroads of worlds, with routes to Istanbul, Zagreb, Cetinje – Belgrade, Vienna – Budapest and Jerusalem.” Through history, Sarajevo become a bridge where the Orient and the West both clashed and merged.
The city itself blends in harmony with its natural surroundings. It is bordered by hills on the north, and Mt. Trebević on the south. The Sarajevo plane stretches in the west, with the Bosna River sour at the foothill of Mt. Igman. Mountains Igman, Bjelašnica, Treskavica and Jahorina are all a stone’s throw away. Numerous records in travelogues are a testament to natural beauties of Sarajevo. The city is often described as “a gem among emeralds”, “magical pearl in a green oasis”, “most beautifully positioned city”.
The city is located at an average of 550 meters above sea level, while its settlements on the slopes of the surrounding hills and mountains rise up to 700 meters above sea level.
Sarajevo and its history began to emerge in the valley of the Miljacka River. The river is 36 kilometres long, formed by the Paljanska and the Mokranjska Miljacka coming together near the village of Bulozi. It flows into the Bosna River as its right tributary, near the village of Butila. The river is most likely named after the sludge that colours the water in red during rainy seasons. There are three other rivers in the wider area of Sarajevo: Mošćanica, Željeznica and Bosnia; hence, the city has very favourable hydrological conditions and high-quality water.
Since the establishment in 1462, Sarajevo was the seat of the province within the Ottoman Empire for over four centuries, monarchy seat of the Provincial Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Austro-Hungarian occupation, and since 1945 the capital of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 1995, Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
U Bosni, u dolini ispod Trebevića, prije pola milenija, nastao je grad čije ime znači dvorac u polju ili polje oko dvorca. Bosanski sandžak – beg, Isa – beg Ishaković na lijevoj obali Miljacke podigao je taj dvorac, sagradio ćupriju i osnovao čaršiju.
Sarajevo je oduvijek bilo raskršće važnih puteva koji su išli iz istočne u zapadnu Evropu, iz mediteranskog bazena ka centralnoj Evropi i obratno. «To je grad koji je u okviru različitih historijskih zbivanja stoljećima bio utočište i raskršće svjetova, s putevima u Carigrad, Zagreb, Cetinje – Beograd, Beč – Peštu i Jeruzalem». Sarajevo je kroz istoriju postalo most na kome su se sučeljavali i spajali Orijent i Zapad.
Grad predstavlja veoma skladno ukomponovanu cjelinu sa okolnim prirodnim ambijentom. Sa sjevera ga obrubljuju brda, sa juga planina Trebević. Na zapadu se pruža Sarajevsko polje i obronci planine Igman, ispod koga izvire rijeka Bosna. U neposrednoj blizini grada nalaze se planine Igman, Bjelašnica, Treskavica i Jahorina. O prirodnim ljepotama Sarajeva ostali su brojni zapisi u putopisima. O gradu se govori kao o: «alemu među smaragdima», «čarobnom biseru u zelenoj oazi», «gradu sa najljepšim položajem».
Sarajevo i njegova istorija počinju se rađati u dolini rijeke Miljacke. Rijeka je duga 36 kilometara i nastaje spajanjem Paljanske i Mokranjske Miljacke kod sela Bulozi. Kao desna pritoka ulijeva se u rijeku Bosnu kod sela Butila. Rijeka je ime, najvjerovatnije, dobila po mulju koji u kišnim razdobljima oboji vodu u crveno. U širem području Sarajeva teku još tri rijeke; Mošćanica, Željeznica i Bosna tako da grad ima veoma povoljne hidrološke uslove i vrlo kvalitetnu vodu.

This is true pearl of Bosnian Nature you can drive bike, quad, skiiing, hiking to other activities. You can taste beautiful traditional food and drinks all year around. This video is about amazing winter hike adventure in this mountain.
Be aware : Always stay on marked trails and have good equipment for winter hike and always do winter hiking on this mountain with somebody who know the trails. Safety first and don't forget to leave trails and mountain house clean for others.

We already felt a special connection even before arriving here in Sarajevo,..
Like Montreal in 1976, they had their Olympics 1984...and we remember following them on TV finding the city so beautiful and charismatic...and finding its people's hospitality so generous and supportive..they would applaud and encourage every athletes no matter where they were from...
Then during the war, 23 years ago, 1 month after after my husband & I met, the loving couple Admira & Bosko got shut by snipers and died in each other's arms. She was Bosnian Muslim, he was Serb orthodox christian. They became known around the world as Romeo & Juliet of Sarajevo..Their story really moved us....They were my age, my generation... When we arrived here...We could still see the scars of the war, but the soul and the charismatic beauty of this unique place overcomes it all... this fabulous city surrounded by these gorgeous hills... the kindness of its people, all religions living in peace together... So we choose to share beautiful side and this is also what people of Sarajevo want us to remember...
