Visaginas: Lithuania's Nuclear Town ????????
???????? Since Lithuania gained it's independence in 1991 it has removed as much of its Soviet past as it possibly could unlike in other post-Soviet republics where there are constant reminders of the USSR around every corner. However in the north of the country lies the town of Visaginas where I was told I could find the last remaining Soviet mosaic ( kind of ). Join me as I head north to see how life is in Visaginas which was built to house the workers from the nearby atomic power station and maybe meet some babushkas on the way.

Visaginas is a city north east of Lithuania, near the borders of Latvia and Belarus. It is a young city with its birthday being 1975. It was built for the people who worked in Ignalina nuclear power plant. Workers from all over the Soviet Union were housed in this city. That's why Visaginas is the only town in Lithuania where the majority of population speaks Russian as the first language. The cities symbol is a crane. This is where I start my walk. Near an old Geiger counter with a crane on top of it.

LOL this was a real campaign that Vilnius, Lithuania made for their city.
This city is INCREDIBLE. And when we learned it had a dirty little nickname we understood why. The photo in the thumbnail totally reminds us of a mini Austin, Texas but Euro! They have just about everything you can think of (great food, a ton of outdoor parks, an epic old town, a solid bar scene, you can walk or scooter EVERYWHERE) and they've invested a ton of money into making this city an all around sweet lifestyle haven.

Getting Between Vilnius and Riga is either expensive or time consuming- there isn’t too much of a middle ground between these two options. But both cities are fantastic places to visit and should be on your list if you’re in the region.

We have trip to Lithuania in August 2019.
We traveled through entire country to show its beautiful nature, sights and tradition to children. Really highly recommend this country in August - it is warm, a lot of sun, lakes and seaside is nice. And it is not expensive, but good quality in food and accommodation.
In this part we travel from Visaginas to Vilnius and visit Paluše National Park with some interesting Honey Museum, Sightseeing Tower, Lithuania independence stone monument from 1930s and even Observatory.

Starting with a brief drive around Visaginas, I take us on a 160km route through Aukštaitija National Park which is the oldest National Park in Lithuania to our destination in the centre of Vilnius. A two and a half hour trip condensed into 29 minutes!
