Leiria Castle has an extraordinary and strategic location, in a place already inhabited in Roman times, where the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, built in 1135 this castle to defend the Southern frontier of his kingdom (Santarém and Lisbon still were under Arab rule).
No alto da cidade, está o Castelo de Leiria que guarda, no interior das imponentes muralhas, vestígios das diversas fases de ocupação, desde a fortaleza militar ao palácio real.
O Castelo de Leiria conta com uma extraordinária e estratégica localização, num lugar habitado em tempos pelos romanos, onde o primeiro Rei de Portugal, Afonso Henriques, edificou em 1135 este castelo para defender a fronteira sul do seu reino, já que Santarém e Lisboa estavam ainda sob o domínio árabe.

A praia aqui existente é muito procurada por famílias para descansar e gozar férias durante o período de Verão.

Leiria is a Portuguese city, capital of the district of Leiria, in the province of Beira Litoral.
Located in the center of Portugal, with 50 533 inhabitants in its urban area.
Espirito Santo Church 18th century.
The city is bathed by the rivers Lis and its tributary, the Lena, with the castle of Leiria being its most notable monument.
In 1142, after definitively reconquering Leiria, D. Afonso Henriques ordered the castle's defenses to be reinforced.
Leiria Castle remains a monumental symbol of the city's history.
Traces of the different phases of occupation, from the military fortress to the royal palace.
Several kings and queens were dazzled by the fantastic landscape that can be seen from the top of the hill.
D. Dinis would have been the monarch who spent the longest time in Leiria, together with his wife, Queen Santa Isabel.
There is a legend that the queen left Leiria Castle, one winter morning, to distribute bread to the most disadvantaged. Surprised by D. Dinis, who asked her where she was going and what she was carrying in her lap, the queen would have replied: They are roses, Lord!. Suspicious, D. Dinis asked: Roses, in January?. D. Isabel then exposed the contents of the lap of her dress and in it there were roses, instead of the loaves she had hidden.
The castle was built with solid walls and towers, inside the Royal Palace, the Church of Santa Maria da Pena (The decoration reveals the influence of the Batalha Monastery sculpture school, revealing the time of its construction (14th/14th century). XV) and the Keep.
Royal Palace ... These balconies are part of the former Gothic Royal Palace (14th century), built by D. João I between the two military turrets.
Restoration at the beginning of the 20th century recovered these dependencies from the state of disrepair they were in, transforming them into a privileged viewpoint over the city.
With a varied cuisine and recognized traditions, the city is historically rich.
Leiria Cathedral...The construction of the Cathedral began in 1546, with three naves of the same height in the interior, of late Renaissance inspiration. The church was only consecrated in 1574.

Existe uma lenda que a rainha saiu do Castelo de Leiria, numa manhã de inverno, para distribuir pães pelos mais desfavorecidos. Surpreendida por D. Dinis, que lhe perguntou onde ia e o que levava no regaço, a rainha teria respondido: São rosas, Senhor!. Desconfiado, D. Dinis inquiriu: Rosas, em Janeiro?. D. Isabel expôs então o conteúdo do regaço do seu vestido e nele havia rosas, ao invés dos pães que ocultara.
O castelo foi construído com sólidas muralhas e torres, tendo no interior o Paço Real, a Igreja de Santa Maria da Pena (A decoração revela a influência da escola de escultura do Mosteiro da Batalha, revelando o tempo da sua construção (séc. XIV/XV) e a Torre de Menagem.
Paço Real ... Estas varandas fazem parte do antigo Paço Real de fundação gótica (séc. XIV), mandado construir por D. João I entre os dois torreões militares.
O restauro nos inícios do século XX recuperou estas dependências do estado de ruína em que se encontravam, transformando-as num miradouro privilegiado sobre a cidade.
Com uma gastronomia variada e com tradições reconhecidas, o município é historicamente rico.
Sé catedral de Leiria...A construção da Sé teve início em 1546, interior com três naves da mesma altura, de inspiração renascentista tardia. A igreja foi consagrada apenas em 1574.
