Enjoy this 4K travel vlog from the Atacama Desert in Chile! We spent 5 days in San Pedro de Atacama, the driest and darkest place on earth. The landscape in Chile was truly stunning and we had so much fun on our day trips through the Atacama Desert and the Altiplano (high plateau). Being on more than 4,000 meters elevation was challenging and the cold temperatures during the Chilean winter were extreme!
We booked our tours with Layana Travel in San Pedro de Atacama and were very happy with them!

El valle del Elqui, llamado antiguamente también como valle de Coquimbo, es el espacio cultural desarrollado en la cuenca del río Elqui ubicada en la provincia de Elqui, región de Coquimbo, en Chile. El principal río de esta cuenca es el Elqui, que nace de la confluencia de los ríos río Claro (Elqui) y río Turbio (Elqui), provenientes ambos de la cordillera de los Andes, y desemboca en el océano Pacífico en la ciudad de La Serena.
En este valle se encuentra ubicado uno de los tantos embalses que posee la región, el embalse Puclaro, que se encuentra a 432 m s. n. m. en un sector conocido como Angostura Puclaro y que tiene una capacidad de 200 millones de m³ de agua y 760 ha.

The Vicuna at Atacama desert Chile
The vicuña or vicuna is one of the two wild South American camelids which live in the high alpine areas of the Andes, the other being the guanaco. Vicuñas are relatives of the llama, and are now believed to be the wild ancestor of domesticated alpacas, which are raised for their coats
Valle del Elqui and Vicuña, Norte Chico, Chile
Chile is blessed with a lot of beautiful geography and Valle del Elqui is no exception. From the coast where La Serena and Coquimbo lie, the Elqui River valley leads inland to eventually reach the Andes. In a place that is deprived of water, the Chileans have had to use what water there is wisely... and the Elqui River has allowed for green in valleys of an otherwise harsh landscape. Vicuña is a delightful town and the birthplace of writer and poet Gabriela Mistral. Her face adorns some Chilean currency and the museum is quaint and interesting for those who can read Spanish. One can also walk around the town, absorbing the unusual landscapes including the juxtaposition between desert and green as well as countryside and town. Thank goodness the Andes provide steady water! Astronomical observatories high on some mountain peaks can also be seen and visited and some Earth Children have been attracted to the area for otherworldly vibes and possible alien visitations.

After landing on the Santiago Airport and reaching our hotel we had half a day to spend in Santiago. We decided to walk to the center of Santiago. Walking is a good way to visit Santiago. Santiago counts 4 million citizens, but the highlights are reachable by foot.
After an excellent lunch in a local restaurant we walked to the Centre Gabriela Mistral. Most of the people think that it is an ugly building. So do I. Via the Av Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins we reached the Plaza Vicuña Mackenna. You may climb the Cerro Santa Lucia to have a nice view over Santiago. We didn’t.
We walked through some car free streets to the Plaza de Armas. On the Plaza de Armas is a lot of activity what is really nice to see. You also find the Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago at the Plaza de Armas. We did not enter the #Cathedral but continued to the Mercado Central. A market is always a highlight to visit in a city, so also in Santiago.
On our way back we entered the Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago at the Plaza de Armas. For us, it was enough Santiago. We walked back to the hotel and had a dinner on a roof terrace with an excellent view on Santiago and the Andes mountains.
