Vicenza, Italy

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Vicenza is another one of the great towns of Italy, most famous for the architecture of native son, Andrea Palladio, who lived here 500 years ago. But in today's program, we are focusing on the people and the streets of this beautiful city.
google map of walking route:
With a population just over 100,000, it has a small town feeling and a high quality of life.
It's a very easy place to visit on a daytrip because the old town center is quite small, about one square kilometer, with many pedestrian lanes and beautiful historic sites.
It is not one of those touristic places. You'll see mostly locals out taking a stroll, furnishing an authentic experience.
The town is like an outdoor museum, with a large collection of important historic buildings, beautifully preserved, such as this old gateway through the medieval walls.
Founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, with continuous occupation reaching its artistic peak in the works of Andrea Palladio, especially the Basilica on the main Piazza Signori, surrounded by beautiful cafés.

We are going to take you on a walk through some of the pedestrian lanes of town, but first it would be nice to drop anchor and have a spritz, join the local crowd at the little Pizzetta Andrea Palladio, next to the Basilica.
You could easily miss it because it's the smallest of the four piazzas that surround the great building, and yet it's one of the coziest and most charming with these arcades and loggia all around.
Next to it, also adjacent to the Basilica which you see towering above, on top of those steps, is Piazza delle Erbe, serving up more spritz, that favorite local drink.
The Tower of Torment was originally a home for a noble family in the 13th century and then became a prison for torture.
Although Palladio called his building a Basilica, based on ancient Roman structures, it was not a church. It was used for civic functions like meetings, and festivities, and judicial proceedings.
Today it is famous for the many jewelry stores all around the street level loggia. The copper-vaulted roof resembles the hull of an upended boat.
From the piazza we're heading north two blocks to the main pedestrian street, walking along the lovely Contrà Santa Barbara, one of many intriguing side lanes.
The main street of town is 700 meters long and lined with shops and cafés, local tailors, designers, big name brands like Zara and H&M, many of them housed in what had been palaces back in the days of the Renaissance.
It's the favorite place for locals to come out for a stroll, especially during the afternoon passeggiata, that fine Italian tradition of people-watching and greeting friends.
Another favorite Italian tradition is trying to figure out which variety of gelato to order.
Or perhaps enjoying a spritz is more to your liking, while sitting at a sidewalk café and watching the people glide by.
This block has the largest palace along the Corso. It's the magnificent Palazzo Trissino-Baston, home of that noble family in the 17th century, and more recently the City Hall.
The most spectacular palace along the street is found at the east end. It's called Palazzo Chiericati, designed by Palladio in 1550 in that Renaissance style, and completed in the late 17th century. Now it's the Civic Museum, with a collection of paintings, prints, and drawings, and medieval, and modern statues.
The same piazza also has another important building designed by Palladio, the Teatro Olimpico. It's a faithful reproduction of the ancient style of Roman theater, its permanent stage front decorated with statues, columns, triumphal arch and tricks of the illusion. Palladio was 72 when he designed this, which became his final work. He never lived to see it built.
The theater is housed in the Palazzo del Territorio, with 19th-century statues in the garden done in the ancient Roman style.
The Tourist Information Office is also found in this Palazzo, a very helpful source of information and tickets.
The work of Palladio, based on a detailed study of classical Roman architecture, gives the city its unique appearance, according to a statement by UNESCO, which designated the city of Vicenza as a World Heritage Site because of the works of Palladio.
The United States Congress adopted a resolution honoring Andre Palladio in the year 2010, celebrating the 500th anniversary of his birth.
Stating the following: He has shaped much of the architectural image of Western civilization and served as a primary source for classical design of many buildings in the US from Colonial times to the present.
As UNESCO described it, Vicenza is the city of Palladio.
Posted signs and maps can help steer you to the various sites. And you'll find that there are some fascinating side streets that branch off from the main Corso, like these next couple of streets reserved for pedestrians and leading back to the Piazza dei Signori.

Places to see in ( Vicenza - Italy )

Places to see in ( Vicenza - Italy )

Vicenza is a city in the Veneto region of northeast Italy. It’s known for the elegant buildings designed by the 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio. These include the Palladian Basilica and the Palazzo Chiericati, now home to an art gallery. Nearby, also by Palladio, the Teatro Olimpico replicates a classic outdoor theater, indoors. On the outskirts of town, the hilltop Villa La Rotonda has 4 identical facades.

Vicenza is located in the Veneto region of Italy, in its own province (the Provincia di Vicenza). It's a medium-sized town, with a population of 110,000. There has been a settlement here right back into the depths of history; remains of the Roman town can still be seen. Later, after the barbarian invasions which repeatedly devastated this part of Italy, it became a significant town, ruled at different times by various greater powers. For several centuries it was governed by Venice; then Napoleon, then the Austrians. In 1866 it became part of the new Kingdom of Italy.

Vicenza was a prosperous town under Venetian rule, and its pride was demonstrated in fine architecture, much of which still survives. Its 'unique appearance,' largely owing to the work of influential sixteenth-century architect Andrea Palladio, has led to the town's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto. After Palladio, Vicenza is most famous for its trade in precious metals, it's also known as the 'City of gold'. It's a lovely town to visit; with a beautiful, compact town centre and attractive villas and viewpoints in the hills a short walk away.

The railway station is to the south-west of the town centre; most of Vicenza's attractions are clustered closely together inside the old town walls. Walking straight along Viale Roma from the railway station, you'll pass two bus stops for the number 8 - if you are planning a trip to the villas just outside town, check the latest timetable displayed here. Soon you'll arrive outside the old town gate, Porta Castello, but first you can visit the Giardino Salvi just outside the gateway: a shady park, ornamented with statues and the Palladian Loggia Valmarana, which is dramatically reflected in dark waters.

Just inside the gateway lies a very convenient self-service restaurant, Self Pause, which is a cheap and quick place to fill up before exploring the town centre. Around Vicenza you can admire many grand buildings by Palladio and his followers. The Italian word palazzo usually means any large building rather than a palace; but many of Vicenza's palazzi do merit the grander translation. Some of the town's buildings are medieval, with several in the Venetian Gothic style, but the majority date from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They line the narrow lanes of Vicenza's town centre; which are called contra, a local word for 'street'.

As soon as you're inside the Porta you find yourself among the town's great buildings. One of the most curious is off to your right. Designed by Palladio, Palazzo Porto Breganze was never finished and stands in an abbreviated form. In front of you is the Corso Andrea Palladio, the centre's main thoroughfare, lined with smart shops and cafes. Some of Vicenza's grandest palazzi lie on Contra Porti, off to the left.

Piazza dei Signori, a few yards south of Corso Andrea Palladio, is the heart of town. It is dominated by two of Vicenza's most striking landmarks, the Basilica Palladiana, the town's medieval law courts, with an imposing later facade by Palladio, and the adjacent Torre di Piazza, a tall and skinny tower. Right in the long midday shadow cast by the tower you'll find one of Vicenza's tourist information offices, where you can pick up a town map, leaflets about local events and attractions and any advice you may need. A second office is located not far away, by the Teatro Olimpico.

( Vicenza - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Vicenza . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Vicenza - Italy

Vicenza, Italy by Bike! Beautiful views of the Veneto Region

Did you know about the natural beauty in the Veneto region of Italy?
This video will show you some of the wonderful sights you can find by cycling in the outskirts of Vicenza. The mountains, the vineyards, the fresh air…it’s all just minutes from the city!

We’ll start by using the main bike path, called Pista Ciclabile R. Casarotto or Pista Ciclabile Riviera Berica. We are also going to some of the adorable villages that you can find by deviating off the path.

I will show you the start of the bike path, at the base of the stairs that go up to Monte Berico, or the Arco delle Scallette. There’s this busy intersection here, with Viale Margherita, and Zushi on the corner, and right across the street is the start of the bike path.

I have been living in Vicenza since 2004, and I know this path like the back of my hand. Riding on it gives me a sense of peace, of freedom, and appreciation for the beauty in the world around me.

The Vicenza, Italy bike path route:
- Villa Rotonda, designed by renowned architect Andrea Palladio.
- The famous Lumignano cliffs, popular with rock climbers from all over Europe.
- Costozza in the comune of Longare.
- Limestone caves, which were used to keep prisoners during a provincial war around the year 1300.
- You will pass a beautiful vineyard
- San Maiolo Church.
- Amazing cliffs, which are part of the Colli Berici, or Berici Hills.
- Villa Scaroni Dottori.

From time to time people ask me, why don’t you get a car? and I tell them, why do I need a car, when I can use my legs?
