IJsselstein to Vianen, small medieval towns | The Netherlands #5
In this episode, we visit two small towns in the Dutch province of Utrecht. Both towns developed in the fourteenth century and were during most of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in a continuous struggle with the nearby city of Utrecht, the largest urban centre in the northern Low Countries. Their strategic position on trade routes via the Rhine made them quite a nuisance for Utrecht. The medieval centres of IJsselstein and Vianen mostly maintained their original layout.

We were strongly recommended to visit Utrecht while in Amsterdam and so we did. The ambient is so hilarious that for those of you who rather some place a bit more quiet than Amsterdam, this is the perfect place. Though it´s style and population is very young, due to its Universities, you are for sure not going to find the frenetic non stop of the neighbor city Amsterdam, nor the massive hordes of tourists. But you'll find a thousand things to do and visit. This little town is the typical gem of a country which is best know for other much more famous places, like Torino is to Italy or the Basque country to France.

NETHERLANDS: Lekbrug Vianen / Middelwaard (Utrecht)
(bridge Vianen & recreation area Middelwaard)
De Middelwaard is gelegen in de uiterwaarden langs de rivier de Lek, naast de brug Vianen/Nieuwegein.
Bij de recreatieplas Middelwaard kun je zwemmen, maar ook wandelen. Het gebied rondom de plas is tevens een geliefde plek om honden uit te laten. Bij de recreatieplas vindt u toiletten, douches, parkeergelegenheid en een ligweide. Het is mogelijk dat je grazende runderen tegen komt.
Rond de recreatieplas is een wandelroute uitgezet van 3 km. Zowel de plas als de wandelroute zijn in beheer bij het Recreatieschap De Stichtse Groenlanden.
De Lekbrug bij Vianen is oorspronkelijk gebouwd in 1936. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd de brug verwoest, na de bevrijding werd een tijdelijke schipbrug aangelegd. In 1948 werd de boogbrug opnieuw opengesteld voor het wegverkeer, in 1949 was de brug weer volledig hersteld. De hoofdoverspanning van de brug is 153 meter lang, en de brug is 29 meter breed. De totale lengte van de brug is 532 meter.

Netherlands Travel Video - Other places as old as Amsterdam have evocative beauty and come in a variety of sizes: Edam, Haarlem, Delft and Deventer to name just some of the smaller delights. Moving up the league tables in size, theres the canal towns of Leiden, Haarlem and Utrecht. And Rotterdam is a modernist feast all its own.
Perhaps the best way to get to the heart of the Netherlands is to do as the Dutch do. Join them in the city centres of classic towns as far flung as Groningen, Maastricht and Den Bosch, lively places filled with cafes that heave with happy Dutch socialising on a sunny day. Or join them on the thousands of kilometres of bike routes as they add not a molecule of carbon to the atmosphere while riding through the lush countryside and past sweeping watery vistas at sea (or is it see?) level. You dont have to travel far to find a lot.

Just outside of Utrecht, The Netherlands is this nice village and hotel. The hotel is geared more to business groups and meetings. Wonderful food and nice service. The rooms are a bit dated but not distracting.

Wandeling door het sfeervolle stadje #Vianen in de provincie Utrecht in Nederland gemaakt. De stad Vianen ligt aan de rivier de Lek in de gemeente Vijfheerenlanden. De stad Vianen heeft een kenmerkende opbouw en structuur. Ze heeft al van oudsher een enigszins vierkante aanleg en een kenmerkend stratenpatroon, waaraan in de loop der tijd geen of weinig veranderingen zijn aangebracht.
De stad is gebouwd rond de haven. Het was een vestingstad, aangelegd om de bewoners van Utrecht in de gaten te houden. Kenmerkend zijn daarom de stadsmuren, er ook te zien dat achter de Molenstraat water ligt, wat kenmerkend is achter een stadsmuur. Vianen kent ook een rijk verleden en er zijn ook monumentale gebouwen te ontmoeten in de dorpskern. Ook is er een musea en nog veel meer. Echt een aanrader ook voor jou om Vianen eens gaan te bezoeken.
