10 Best place to visit in Viana do Castelo Portugal

Viana do Castelo, Portugal

Viana do Castelo is one of the most beautiful cities in the north of Portugal. Their participation in the Portuguese Discoveries and, later, in cod fishing show their traditional connection to the sea.

Viana do Castelo is quickly accessed from Porto, or from Valença for those coming from Spain. From Monte de Santa Luzia: you can see the privileged geographical situation of the city, next to the sea and the mouth of the river Lima. This breathtaking view and the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Ventura Terra's revivalist building from 1898, can be the starting point for visiting the city.

Viana has enriched itself with emblazoned palaces, churches and convents, fountains and fountains that constitute a heritage heritage worth visiting. At the Tourist Office you can order a brochure and take routes inspired by Manueline, Renaissance, Baroque, Art Deco or tile. Walking through some of the streets in the historic center, you always reach Praça da República, the heart of the city. This is where the Misericórdia building and the fountain, from the 16th century, are located, as well as the old City Halls. Not far away is the Romanesque Sé or Igreja Matriz.

Facing the sea that made Viana's history, a baroque church holds the image of Senhora da Agonia, of the fishermen's devotion. He goes out every year on August 20th to bless the sea in one of the most colorful festivals in Portugal, where the beauty and richness of the typical costumes that parade in the festivals are worth mentioning.

Is that Viana - also known for filigree in gold - has been able to maintain its traditions, as can be seen at the Museu do Traje (costume and gold), at the Municipal Museum (special emphasis on the typical Viana crockery displayed here) or on the Gil Eanes ship. Built at the Viana do Castelo Shipyards to support cod fishing, the ship here is again anchored to remember the city's maritime and shipbuilding traditions.

But Viana do Castelo is also considered a “Mecca of Architecture” thanks to the many important names of contemporary Portuguese architecture that sign equipment and spaces in the city. This is the case of the Praça da Liberdade by Fernando Távora, the Álvaro Siza Vieira Library, the Pousada da Juventude by Carrilho da Graça, the Hotel Axis by Jorge Albuquerque or the Cultural Center of Viana do Castelo, by Souto Moura, among many others .

On the outskirts of the city we can take a stroll along the coastal or fluvial bike path or on one of the many marked trails, as well as practice surfing, windsurfing or kite surfing and bodyboarding on fine golden sand beaches. And jet-skiing, sailing, rowing or canoeing on the Lima River.

Ep. 10 - A Surprise Visit in Viana do Castelo - Knotvikings

In this episode we have a ridiculously nice sail from Spain down to Viana do Castelo in Portugal. We flirt ourselves in to the marina as it is full when we arrive... We are also surprised by our Finnish friends who shows up at our boat just a few minutes after we have docked.

We visit the incredibly beautiful church; the Basilica of Santa Luzia and have a beautiful walk through the city of Viana do Castelo.

Oh... and Steffi and Leo miss out on dolphins that come to Yemaya ;-)

Hope you enjoy the episode!

THANK you so much for watching and PLEASE leave a comment below to let us know what you think!

We are a family of 3: Chris, Steffi and Leo who left Stockholm in Sweden June 2017. This is our story on how we sail our 37ft Najad 37 sailboat from 1981 across the North Sea, down the European coast, through the English channel, Bay of Biscay and now on our way across the Atlantic.

We took the big step of quitting our jobs and made some major changes in our lives to fulfill our dream of going long distance cruising together.

We don't have a set plan on where we are going nor for how long we will be gone, but instead we try to explore the world together as a family and live our lives from day to day as much as we can. While uploading this we are currently on our way to the Caribbean so stay tuned for a lot more episodes to come!

The Gil Eannes Hospital Ship, built in Viana do Castelo in 1955, supported, for decades, the Portuguese cod fleet that operated in the banks of Terra Nova and Greenland. After cod fleet was deactivated, it was left to rot on the docks of Lisbon for many years. On January 31, 1998, it was received festively in Foz do Lima, where, after being cleaned and restored, was opened to the public on August 19, 1998, assuming itself as an attraction pole for Viana do Castelo. Is Viana do Castelo worth visiting? What is Viana do Castelo known for?

▶️ Please Subscribe:

Hello Guys! Welcome and today we are going for a day trip to Northern Portugal’s hidden gems in Minho, The Viana Do Castelo.

Viana do Castelo, located in the Minho area of Northern Portugal, is one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal. It is well-known for both the beauty of its metropolis and the beauty of the surrounding countryside. This city is made unique by the Pilgrimage of Nossa Senhora da Agonia and the breathtaking views of the Lima River. The city is known for its monuments in and around the city, as well as the natural beauty which surrounds it.

Viana has a variety of heritage worth visiting, such palaces with coats of arms, churches and monasteries, magnificent fountains and water features.

Viana do Castelo is the jewel of the Costa Verde, having a charming medieval center, a magnificent riverbank, and lovely beaches just outside the city. The old area features lush 19th-century boulevards and tiny alleyways lined with Manueline manors and rococo palaces, all of which are dramatically presided over by the pearly white neo-Byzantine Santa Luzia church perched high above town. Viana's location near the Rio Lima estuary gives it an ideal starting point for exploring the Lima valley's lower reaches.

In the city's environs, you may go for a bike ride along the coast or along the river, or go for a stroll on one of the many defined trails, or go surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, or bodyboarding on the golden sand beaches. Jet skiing, sailing, rowing, and canoeing are also available on the Lima River.

City in Portugal: Viana do Castelo, Portugal Walking Tour

#citiesinportugal #vianadocastelo #portugal #braga #lisboa #porto #thingstodoinporto #thingstodoinportugal #townsinportugal #portodaytrips #daytripsfromporto #whattodoinportugal

Hola from Viana do Castello, PORTUGAL????????

Nestled in the heart of Viana do Castelo, a charming city in the north of Portugal, lies the Plaza de la República, a space that effortlessly encapsulates the rich history and vibrant culture of this stunning region. This article takes you on a journey through the Plaza de la República, uncovering its architectural wonders, historical significance, and the lively atmosphere that makes it a must-visit destination.

The Plaza de la República serves as the central hub of Viana do Castelo, where the city’s historical and cultural veins converge. The square is surrounded by emblematic buildings, each telling its own story of the city’s past. Perhaps the most striking of these is the Misericórdia, a 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece. This building, with its intricately designed façade and imposing presence, sets the tone for the architectural feast that the plaza offers.

The fountain in the center of the square, dating back to the 1550s, is another focal point (unfortunately under restauration). Designed by João Lopes the Elder, it is an exquisite example of Renaissance artistry in Portugal. The fountain, with its ornate basins and detailed sculptures, is not just a visual spectacle but also a historical artifact, having quenched the thirst of locals, pilgrims and travelers for centuries.

The Plaza de la República is a living, breathing space that hosts various cultural activities and events throughout the year. From traditional festivals to modern-day concerts, the plaza transforms into a melting pot of cultures, showcasing the dynamic and diverse nature of Viana do Castelo.

The Plaza de la República in Viana do Castelo is more than just a tourist spot; it's a cultural tapestry, weaving together the historical, architectural, and social threads of the region. It's a place where every stone, every building, and every performance tells a story of the city's past and present. For anyone visiting Portugal, a stop at this vibrant square is a journey through time and a celebration of the enduring spirit of Viana do Castelo.

Viana do Castelo
