Top 5 waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina

In this year, if you are planning on traveling throughout Europe, make sure to add Bosnia and Herzegovina to your bucket list. Among many amazing and stunning sightseeing places, you absolutely have to visit Waterfalls in Bosnia. These gems are leaving all people who visit them breathless. Bosnia, with these amazing waterfalls, is surely Paradise on Earth.

Waterfalls in Bosnia are one of the natural beauties that will forever captivate our eyes. Waterfalls probably arouse emotions in most people that we didn’t even know existed. It is safe to say that waterfall is water in its most beautiful form.

Some of them are a special attraction during the summer months, and some turn into an ice mass in the winter and create a fascinating sight. It is almost impossible to find the right words to describe the beauty of the waterfalls we have. Some of them are creating lakes after the fall while some of them are creating tufa. Even, one of them is situated in the center of the city which makes him the only waterfall in the world that is situated in the city center.

You can read a list of 5 must-see waterfalls in Bosnia on our waterfalls blog

One Day Trip in Sarajevo and Visegrad Bosnia and Herzegovina |

It’s the first time I’ve visited Bosnia and Herzegovina and I was fascinated by the beautiful nature and the smiley people in this mountainous Balkan country about which, I admit, I didn’t know much.
The two cities that I visited first were Visegrad and the capital Sarajevo.
Visegrad is located near the border with Serbia. The city is famous for its beautiful bridge which was made timeless by Ivo Andric’s novel “The bridge on the Drina.” For this novel he won a Nobel prize. It was built in the middle of the sixteenth century on Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic’s initiative to connect Serbia with Bosnia and Herzegovina. The bridge was named after him and today it’s a UNESCO-listed site. The boat trip along the green Drina river is a pleasant extra especially if one is a bit tired from the long journey as was the case with me.
From Visegrad to Sarajevo it’s a two-hour drive. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to explore the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. I managed to walk around the main tourist quarter only - “Bash charshia”. Here is found the symbol of the city too - the Sarajevo sebilj (a wooden fountain), in front of which people take pictures to remind them of the place or they simply drink water from it. This is without question the heart of the city. Together with the many tourists there were many local people too who had come for a walk and who were sitting at the cafes enjoying the sun. The eateries are at every corner and you could smell the grills and aromatic hookahs - colourful, vibrant and exciting.
Near the fountain there’s an abundance of craft shops from which you can buy all kinds of handmade souvenirs. You can even see how they craft them on the spot. Among them stood out the shells from cartridges, lovely multi-colored Bosnian carpets, pots for Bosnian coffee ...
The food - very tasty, familiar, the servings - substantial. The burek with meat that I tried was great! The baklava, coffee ... everything. And the people are very smiley. It is said that the East and the West meet in Sarajevo and this really is the feel of it!
My tour around the Balkan peninsula continues ...

I’m Lora. Have a nice journey!

I’m Lora. Have a nice journey!

Visegrad, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Visegrad is a lovely town, located on the Drina river in Republika Srpska, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This town became known to the world after Nobel Prize winner (1961) Ivo Andric published the historical novel The Bridge on the Drina.
The Old Stone Bridge from the 16th century, an endowment of Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic is one of the most important national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and was entered in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. In the ascendant of his powers, Grand Vizier Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic ordered that the most beautiful bridge must be built in Visegrad on the Drina river. The main architect of the bridge was Mimar Sinan, the greatest architect of the Otoman empire. The bridge of Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic is a nice example of the Ottoman architecture. The bridge is 180 m long and 6 m wide, featuring 11 arches above the river. It is the top Visegrad attraction and a key stop in trips to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Just nearby this famous bridge is another tourist attraction – Andricgrad (Andrictown). Andricgrad is a project of a famous film director Emir Kusturica, inspired by works and characters of mentioned famous writer, nobel prize winner, Ivo Andric. In architectural terms, the city itself is a mix of different eras and styles that have changed through the history of this area: the Byzantine style, the Ottoman period, the Renaissance and Classicism. Some of the main objects of Andricgrad are: Ivo Andric Institute, Memorial House, Fine arts Academy, Centre for Slavic languages, Town hall, Multiplex cinema, Renaissance theatre, restaurants, coffee bars and souvenir shops. After opening, it became one of the top things to see in Visegrad.
