LAKE OHRID North Macedonia ???????? - Balkan PARADISE & Europe's Best Kept Secret | 197 Countries 3 Kids
Join us as we visit Ohrid, North Macedonia - one of Europe's best-kept secrets!
Ohrid is a town in the southwestern part of North Macedonia, lying on the shores of Lake Ohrid. Together they make the most bustling tourist destination in the country.
Ohrid is famous for having 365 churches over the centuries - one for each day of the year - hence why the town is known as the Balkan and European Jerusalem. The entire Ohrid region is protected by UNESCO under the world heritage program.
We entered the country through the Serbian—N. Macedonian border. The only thing we needed to show was the Green card for the car and we were on our way to Ohrid.
A good thing to know is that there are tolls on the road — the prices are not so bad though, varying between 1 and 2 Dollars per toll. We couldn’t find an ATM at the gas station, but luckily they were kind enough to charge our card and give us some cash back (something you don’t often see in other European countries).
After almost 3 hours on the road, we finally reached Ohrid. We checked in at a cozy place in the downtown area, called City Inn, which was going to be our home for the next few days.
The next morning, we decided to take a walk to the waterfront. As we explored the center and the old part of the town, we realized why Ohrid is also known as the Pearl of Macedonia.
One, because of the picturesque views, and two, because of the actual pearls you can find all over the town. (There are several old families that produce the famous Ohrid pearls, but the true authentic technique is a well-kept secret.)
Here, we met Zoran, the programmer we have worked with for the past two years and visited his office.
We ended the day with some card tricks and a delicious dinner with our friends.
On day 2, we visited Samuel’s Fortress. On our hike up, we ran into an amazing ancient amphitheater that was used for festivals and gladiator fights. Today, it's home to the most prestigious summer music, dance, and theatre festival in North Macedonia.
Samuel’s Fortress was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire and 10 centuries later, it’s still standing strong. The view from the top is breathtaking and it only costs 1 Euro to enter (make sure to bring cash).
Within the fortress walls, we found one of the most important archeological sites and holy grounds in N. Macedonia - Plaoshnik.
As we climbed down, we were amazed by the beauty of the lake and had the chance to see the most photographed church in North Macedonia, St. John the Theologian at Kaneo.
Next, we visited the church of St. Sophia, built in the 11th century. This place is of monumental value for Macedonian culture, architecture, and history.
We decided to end the day in the company of our dear friends we met back in 2014 and have some delicious food at a local restaurant.
Ohrid is truly a destination not to be missed. Be sure to add this hidden gem to your European wish list.

Visit Macedonia - Multimodal Diverse Travel (subtitles)
Multimodal Diverse Travel is part of Macedonia: from fragments to pixels, a special exhibition of prototypical interactive systems with subjects drawn from ancient Macedonia, the result of a collaboration between the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki (AMTh) and the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology -- Hellas (ICS-FORTH), hosted by the AMTh.
This system enables more than one visitor at the same time to interactively explore information about various areas and points of a map of Macedonia.
The system comprises a table, whose surface is covered by a printed map on which the location of various cities and other notable sites is projected. White paper tablets with a coloured frame are at the visitors' disposal. On each tablet a magnifying glass is displayed. When the magnifying glass is placed over a city, related images, videos and texts appear on the tablet. For every city there are multiple information pages, which can be viewed by touching virtual buttons at the bottom of the tablet. The colour of the frame of each tablet designates the language in which information is presented.

Macedonia today is a geographical region of Greece, and the largest of the Greek territory.
It constitutes most of the geographic and historical region of ancient Macedon, a Greek kingdom ruled by the Argeads whose most celebrated members were Alexander the Great and his father Philip II.
In 336 B.C., Alexander the Great became the leader of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia. By the time he died 13 years later, Alexander had built an empire that stretched from Greece all the way to India. That brief but thorough empire-building campaign changed the world: It spread Greek ideas and culture from the Eastern Mediterranean to Asia. Historians call this era the Hellenistic period.
The name Macedonia was later applied to identify various administrative areas in the Roman and Byzantine Empires with widely differing borders.

Opština Vevčani se nalazi 14 km od obale Ohridskog jezera, u podnožiju prekrasnog planinskog venca Jablanice. Veruje se da je selo Vevčani onsovano u periodu kraja 6. ili početkom 8. veka. Mesto su osnovali Berziti koji su tada prili hrišćanstvo. U blizini se nalazi izvor, lednička jezera, velika površina šume. Vevčani su poznati po svom festivalu koji ima tradiciju dugu skoro hiljadu godina. Zanimljivo je da možete dobiti čak i njihovo državljanstvo i pasoš, ali pod uslovom da promovišete Vevčane u svetu.
Ohrid i jezero se nalaze na listi svetske baštine i pod zaštitom UNESCO-a. S obzirom da sliv jezera broji više od 40 reka, ovo je jedinstveno mesto gde možete videti kako reka Crni Drim ulazi u ohridsko plavetnilo. Kada se pomene Ohrid, najčešće ljudi pomisle na veliki broj crkava (nekada ih je bilo preko 300) i poznati manastir Sv. Naum. Šetajući se starim gradom, videćete desetine što velikih, što malih crkava, i one stvarno svojom lepotom predstavljaju glavno obeležje Ohrida.
