It's no exaggeration, Menton is truly one of the most magical places in the world!
We cannot believe we hadn't heard of this town until a couple of years ago - and it seems we're not alone. As soon as we read about it, it shot to the top of our bucket list of places we just had to visit. When people asked where we were going and we told them 'Menton', many had a confused look on their face. 'Where's that?' they asked.
It's so colourful, it's just incredible. The narrow streets and rustic buildings leave you in awe. What's more, it's just a very short journey on the train to Italy. Tucked away right on the border where the French Riviera meets Italy, there's so much to do.

A trip to West Liguria, otherwise known in Italian as Riviera di Ponente.
Quite an understated region of Italy largely unknown to the global tourists. Charming and unpretentious, rustic and beautiful, real. Great food and beautiful beaches, absolutely a destination to be explored. We chose the places almost randomly, with minimal research, but only realized later that there are so many other beautiful towns and villages that we still have to explore in the future. And we will. It is easily reached from Milan, and of course Ligurian capital Genova, which we will cover later.

L'autostrada A10, conosciuta anche come autostrada dei Fiori o AutoFiori, corre interamente in territorio ligure, collegando Genova a Ventimiglia (in prossimità del confine di Stato con la Francia) attraverso tutta la Riviera di Ponente, per una lunghezza di 158,7 km. Fa parte per tutta la sua estensione della strada europea E80, la quale prosegue in territorio francese fino a Aix-en-Provence come autoroute A8.
Gran parte del tracciato è costruito a mezza costa con un susseguirsi di gallerie e viadotti. Per questo il pedaggio dell'autostrada, applicato su tutta la tratta senza eccezione alcuna, è uno dei più cari d'Italia.
L'autostrada A10, superata Savona, tocca le città di Albenga, Imperia, Sanremo e Ventimiglia. Dopo 6 km da quest'ultimo svincolo, all'interno della galleria Cima della Girauda, vi è il confine di stato con la Francia. Attualmente la segnaletica stradale riporta, in direzione Francia, sul viadotto Del Passo, prima della galleria Cima della Girauda, un cartello che annuncia il confine di stato a 250 m, mentre, in direzione Italia, viene segnalato erroneamente, sempre sul viadotto Del Passo l'ingresso in Italia, in realtà già avvenuto nella galleria precedente. Fino agli anni novanta sia il cambio del colore delle strisce laterali dal giallo al bianco, sia un cartello luminoso posto all'interno della galleria indicavano l'esatta posizione del confine (riconoscibile ancora dal cambiamento dei sistemi d'illuminazione e dal diverso spessore dell'asfalto).
L'autoroute A8, detta La Provençale è un'autostrada francese.
Collega Aix-en-Provence (dove si collega alla A7) con Mentone (confine di Stato) attraversando la Provenza e la Costa Azzurra.
Il suo prolungamento in territorio italiano è la A10.
L'A8 è un'estensione della A7 che inizia a ovest di Aix-en-Provence a La Fare-les-Oliviers. L'autostrada passa per i dipartimenti di Bocche del Rodano, Varo e Alpi Marittime. Essa serve le città di Aix-en-Provence, Fréjus, Saint-Raphaël, Cannes, Antibes, Nizza, Monaco e Mentone, prima di attraversare il confine dove diventa l'autostrada italiana A10.
Essa attraversa le montagne di Sainte-Balsam e di Maures, tra Aix-en-Provence e Fréjus, e il Massiccio dell'Esterel tra Saint-Raphaël e Cannes. Seguendo la Grande Corniche, la strada offre bellissimi panorami del mare tra Nizza e Mentone.
La strada è soggetta a traffico pesante per tutto l'anno, ed è particolarmente congestionata a luglio e agosto (soprattutto tra Antibes e Nizza). Ne risulta che siano stati adottati schemi di gestione del traffico simili a quelli usati sul Boulevard Péripherique di Parigi, nel tratto tra il Var e Nizza Ovest. Il tratto che attraversa le montagne di Maures e dell'Esterel è a rischio di incendio boschivo durante l'estate.

We always thought the South of French was hyped up, but it's honestly as beautiful as everyone says; especially Menton. This coastal town is deemed as the the pearl of the France and is one of the most beautiful corners of the country!!
In this video our day starts on a jog exploring Imperia, Italy. We then take it to Ventimiglia, Italy, an Italian town just a short train ride away from Menton. After exploring the market and coast there, we drive to Menton to take in the views and get some good food. Before the night ends, we drive through Monaco and are intrigued by the wealth there. The next day we explore Nice and taste test some delicious baked goods at a boulangerie. We hope you enjoy watching! :)

Ventimiglia is a city, comune and bishopric in Liguria, northern Italy, in the province of Imperia. It is located 130 km northwest of Genoa by rail, and 7 km from the French-Italian border, on the Gulf of Genoa, having a small harbour at the mouth of the Roia River, which divides the town into two parts. Ventimiglia's urban area has a population of 55,000.
The name derives from ancient Ligurian dialect, in Latin(ized?) “Albium Intemelium”, meaning capital city of the Intemelii. Ventimiglia is the ancient Albium Intemelium, the capital of the Intemelii, a Ligurian tribe which long resisted the Romans, until in 115 BC it was forced to submit to Marcus Aemilius Scaurus. Albintimilium became a municipium in 89 BC. In AD 69 the city was sacked by the army of Otho and Vitellius, but recovered to remain prosperous into the 5th century, surrounded by walls with cylindrical towers built at each change of direction.
Remains of a Roman theatre (first half of the 2nd century) are visible, and remains of many other buildings have been discovered, among them traces of the ancient city walls, a fine mosaic, found in 1852 but at once destroyed, and a number of tombs to the west of the theatre. The ruins of the ancient Albintimilium are situated in the plain of Nervia, c. 2 kilometres (1 mile) to the east of the modern town.
The caves of the Balzi Rossi have proved rich in palaeolithic remains of the Quaternary period. Remains of a family of Cro-Magnon people were discovered, with several skeletons of men, women and children. Very important architecturally and historically is the ancient medieval city centre, perched on a hill overlooking the new town.
The Church of San Michele Arcangelo was erected in the 10th century by the Counts of Ventimiglia on the foundations of a pagan temple. Later it was entrusted to the Benedictines of Lirins. In the 11th-12th centuries it was rebuilt in Romanesque style. In 1628 it lost the aisles after an earthquake. It houses milestones from the old Via Iulia Augusta, two of which are used as stoups and one supports the crypt's vault.
The present Romanesque Cathedral dedicated to the Assumption, Cattedrale di Nostra Signora Assunta,, with an 11th-century baptistery, see of the present Diocese of Ventimiglia-San Remo (just Ventimiglia until 1957, founded 670), is built on the ruins of an earlier Lombard church, which in turn was on the site of a Roman building, possibly a temple. The municipal library has the second largest collection of 17th-century manuscripts and books in Italy (the biggest collection is in Venice).
The Giardini Botanici Hanbury (Hanbury Botanical Gardens), surrounding the villa of Sir Thomas Hanbury, La Mortola, are the biggest in Italy and among the finest in Europe, boasting many varieties of tropical and sub-tropical species that thrive in this mild climate. Near Ventimiglia are the Genoese fortresses of Castel d'Appio, Forte San Paolo and Fortezza dell'Annunziata.
Ventimiglia is a popular summer destination for tourists on the French Riviera. Particularly popular all year with visitors from France is the weekly street market (held on a Friday), along the seafront of the new town, which causes major traffic congestion.

Ventimiglia ITALY Friday Mkt and Day trip Tour from FRANCE - Dec 2023
After 7 days of France it was a nice welcome to enter Italy for some good food and some shopping. It's only a 3.5 Euro 15min train ride from Menton in France or 35 min from Nice. There is a outdoor mkt every Friday but even if you don't go Fri, go for some good Italian Food and culture.

Ventimiglia is a resort town in the province of Imperia, Liguria, northern Italy. It is located 130 km (81 mi) southwest of Genoa, and 7 km (4.3 mi) from the French-Italian border, on the Gulf of Genoa, having a small harbour at the mouth of the Roia river, which divides the town into two parts. Ventimiglia's urban area has a population of 55,000.
