8 Plovdiv to Velingrad to Sophia in Bulgaria
Istanbul to Plovdiv:
Plovdiv was a very interesting city to visit. But now I am off to treat myself to a special spa retreat in the mineral springs of Velingrad--a short train journey from Plovdiv. After a couple days of pampering, I continued on to Sofia.
A note about this journey:
On November 18, I departed Kutaisi, Georgia on an expected 2 1/2 month winter journey to Pamplona Spain. Most of my travel will be by train because I LOVE trains!
I plan to continue documenting the entire journey across the south of Europe with lots of details so you learn how I travel independently and solo! So stay tuned...

Sofia Drone Flight: Sofia is the capital of the Balkan nation of Bulgaria. Its in the west of the country, below Vitosha Mountain. The citys landmarks reflect more than 2,000 years of history, including Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Soviet occupation. Medieval Boyana Church has 13th-century frescoes. Built by the Romans in the 4th century, St. George Rotunda Church has medieval and Ottoman decoration dating to the 10th century. A national symbol, Sofias onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral commemorates Russian soldiers killed during the 19th-century Russo-Turkish War. The floor of Saint Sofia Church is covered with early Christian mosaics. The National Archaeological Museum (in a former mosque) houses a gold Thracian burial mask. The 19th-century royal Vrana Palace now contains museums of fine art and ethnology. The huge, 20th-century National Palace of Culture stages concerts and an annual film festival. On Vitosha Mountain, Vitosha Nature Park is popular for hiking, mountain biking, summer stays in huts and chalets, and skiing in winter. // Bulgaria is a Balkan nation with diverse terrain encompassing Black Sea coastline, a mountainous interior and rivers, including the Danube. A cultural melting pot with Greek, Slavic, Ottoman, and Persian influences, it has a rich heritage of traditional dance, music, costumes, and crafts. Medieval churches at Ivanovo are cut from solid rock. The fortresslike Rila Monastery, built in Bulgarian Renaissance style, is set in the Rila Mountains. Archaeological sites include Nessebar, the 3,000-year-old ruins of a Greek colony, on the Black Sea. Up the coast, Varna is known for beach resorts, while southwestern Bansko is a ski destination. This property is situated in a beautiful mountainous village at 30 km from
the town of Vratsa and at 15 km from the spa resort Varshets, well known for
its spa hotels and mineral springs. The property consists of a 2-storey
house and 600 sq.m. regulated land. The built up area is 90 sq.m. There are
a hallway, a living room, a kitchen and a storage room suitable for a
bathroom. External steps lead to the second floor, which has a terrace, a
hallway, and three rooms. Water and electricity are connected. There is also
a well and a farm outbuilding.
The village is nice and peaceful with amazing mountainous nature. The
property has big potential and is a perfect investment!
