What to See & Do in Bitola, Macedonia

What to See & Do in Bitola, Macedonia

TRAVEL HUSTLE REPEAT GEAR ►

In this episode, David takes us around Macedonia to show us what to see and do in Bitola.

The city of Bitola is a mix of ancient and modern traditions. It is small enough to easily explore by foot, and will give you the opportunity to get very familiar Macedonian culture. Heraclea Lyncestis is an ancient site just 2 kilometers from Bitola. It is known for its Greek and Roman architecture, especially its colorful mosaic floors, which are exceptional examples of early Christian art. Don’t forget to admire the amphitheater during your visit to the site.

Magnolia Square is the main square of Bitola. There are several landmarks surrounding the square: Mosque, the Clock Tower, statue of Phillip II of Macedon (in the center of the square) and the beginning of Sirok Sokak, the main pedestrian boulevard of the city.

While exploring around Bitola, you have to stroll through the Old Bazaar. This is one of the city’s most important cultural and social meeting points. Stop at the fruit and vegetable market of the Old Bazaar. It’s really quite colorful and lively. See what produce is in season when you go!

The Old Bazaar is a place to get daily errands done and a great opportunity to purchase souvenirs. Next up on David’s tour is the Museum of Bitola, which holds ancient artifacts and memorabilia from the Balkan struggle for independence. The museum itself used to be a military academy. There are several exhibits and halls dedicated to the academy's most famous student - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, also known as the first president of Turkey and “Father of the Turks”.

Sirok Sokak Street is the perfect place to get a coffee and people watch. It’s a Must-Do when in Bitola. If you don’t, it’s like you were never here.

Right outside the city (5-minute drive) is the village of Dihovo, which is a great place to visit on a day trip. Villa Dihovo is a unique experience for all who visit. If you choose to come here to dine, you’ll enjoy a pleasant array of Macedonian specialties and refreshing salads made from vegetable grown on the property. Villa Dihovo is also a bed and breakfast. The only thing with a fixed price here is the alcohol, which is definitely something you don’t see every day.

David also visited a bee farm in Dihovo and was able to try the honey straight out of the comb. The bee farm also sells honey in jars, which is a great gift to take back home with you. Give yourself an extra day in Bitola so you want to enjoy the flora and fauna of nearby Pelister National Park. Hiking is the most popular activity here.

So if you’re ready to dive into Macedonian history and cuisine, consider stopping in Bitola for a few days to take in its rich culture and friendly people.

Hadzi Mahmud Bey Mosque in Bitola, Macedonia

Surrounded by shops and old parts of the complex, close to the river Dragor, the Hacı Mahmud Bey mosque still occupies the best area of today's market (the Fish market).
In the times of Evliya Çelebi this part of the market belonged to the Turners (Çekrekçi) and to the Tailors, in the vicinity of the Horse market (At-pazar).
The mosque was built in the year of Hicra 928 or 1521-22 and it was renovated in 1873. The medrese that was a part of the complex was registered in the Land Survey register of 1074 AH/ 1663. The mosque was also noted in the Land Survey register dating from 1141 AH/ 1728.36 The founder of the mosque and its complex was Haci Mahmud Bey, known in the town as 'Tomruk Aga' (The prison warder). He may have been one of the war heroes (Gazi) of Sultan Bayezit Han and for that reason he was appointed as governor of the town, which he ruled in a despotic manner.

The archaeological site Bargala in Macedonia

20.10.2008
Recent archaeological research reveals that the transition from the late Classical period to the early Christian period was witness to the raising of many structures. The late Roman town of Bargala was situated where the Kozjachka River joins the Bregalnitsa River, and was included within the province of Mediterranean Dacia. In the 4th and 5th century A.D. Bargala grew into a cultural and ecclesiastical center covering nearly five hectares and surrounded by 2.20 meter walls.

Баргала - прв епископски центар

Локалитетот Баргала веројатно е првиот епископски центар по течението на река Брегалница. Тоа го докажува третата откриена базилика на овој локалитет.

Clock Tower in Bitola, Macedonia

The Clock Tower in Bitola represents city center and is situated in the north part of the most famous Macedonian street -- Sirok Sokak (Широк Сокак - Wide Street).According to some sources the Clock Tower was built in the seventeenth century. Other still insufficiently validated scientific sources and distant folk memory, indicate that the clock tower was built at the same time with the church St. Dimitrij in 1830, during the period of Turkish rule.
The basic building material from which the construction is made is well formed stone and mortar. According to the legend, during the construction, as material for connecting the blocks were used 60,000 eggs, collected from rural households in Bitola. The intent of this was to make the tower walls stronger.
The Clock tower is 33 meters high, set on a square base with sides of 5.8 meters. On the north side it has a semi-circular arched entrance through which up, go stone stairs, spiral derived. At the end of the stairs, is the clock mechanism. On all four sides are built special metal plates on which are mounted clock hands and inscribed Roman numerals from one to twelve. The top part is a small dome which sits on a square plateau, protected with an iron fence.

Bitola, Macedonia (part 1)

Over 50 travel-addicted people from many countries all over the world joined the European meeting of VirtualTourist.com members (VT Euromeet 2011) which took place in Bitola, Macedonia on 27th May 2011.

We had great time in restaurant Grne on Shirko Sokak that was one of the best national restaurants in Macedonia. It is situated in the Old Russian consulate (now restored & protected building) on the main Magnolija Square in Bitola right next to the Clock Tower. We enjoyed local music and dance as well as delicious hot buffet with Macedonian national dishes, salads & desert.
