Utena District Architecture

Church Of The Ascension Of Christ In Utena

In 1879, fire ravaged the wooden church of Utena, only less than one hundred years old. In the architecture of this church, the forms of Classicism and folk architecture intertwined. The fire spared just the belfry, which was just several years old and had clear traces of Romanticism. Decision was adopted to build a new stone church in the same place.

Complex Of Post Office Buildings

On the road between Kaunas and Zarasai, many travellers pay attention to some white stone buildings different in size, standing out in this landscape as Classical style ones. This was an infrastructure of the most modern and most important road of the Russian Empire in the first half of the 19th century.

Palace Of The Bank Of Lithuania In Utena

From the second half of the third decade, in smaller towns of Lithuania, the most important public buildings used to be built – schools, banks and Houses of Riflemen performing a cultural function. Particularly monumental was the building of The Bank of Lithuania in Kaunas: mostly thanks to Mykolas Songaila, who even in the 20-ies had drawn up the project of this building, which was the first and the main edifice of one of the most important financial institutions.

Saint Joseph Church In Leliūnai

The first church in Leliūnai was built in 1698, yet we do not have more detailed information about it. The second wooden church was built by Leliūnai Manor owner Juozas Pomarnackas in 1788. The parish was established in 1793. The church was consecrated and named after St Joseph. It has a plan of the Latin cross with a separate wooden belfry in the churchyard. After the old church deteriorated, in 1901-1905, the present masonry church was built due to the care of the priest Antanas Masaitis.

Manor Of Bikuškis

The property of the Manor was mentioned in the written sources even in the mid-14th century. The Manor formed itself in the 17th-18th centuries in two phases which left their own traces in the composition of the Manor. During the early phase of its development, which included the period between the 17th and 18th centuries, the relief and the structure of the Manor had formed themselves.

EPIC ROAD TRIP THROUGH LITHUANIA! Trakai Castle & Kernavé UNESCO World Heritage Site & Kaunas!

After four days in the City of Vilnius we hired a car to explore more of Lithuania.

In this vlog we visit Trakai Castle which stands on it’s own island, make an accidental drive through eery Panarai (shooting site used by the Nazi’s during WWll) and then we find ourselves in what looks like Lithuania’s version of Hobbitville - the beautiful Kernave Archeological Site which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site is where ancient settlers built a series of villages.

We stay overnight in Kaunas and check out Kaunas Castle and The Market Square whilst getting caught up in a mini Baltic blizzard!

Travel vlog 8| Kaunas, Lithuania | Country #2| Filmed March 2020

TKT tip: If you’re visiting Lithuania, hiring a car is super affordable and a great way to get to see all of the places outside of the main cities, totally worth it!

Vilnius, Lithuania travel with local tour guide

Lithuania is celebrating 100 years of independence. Sort of. While it shook off more than a century of Tsarist rule on February 16, 1918, it was reoccupied at the end of the Second World War and only regained its freedom in 1990. Nevertheless, the country is marking the centenary, as is sure to be hoping the next 100 years is rather less fraught.

It seems an opportune time, therefore, to examine what this Baltic nation has to offer travellers.
1. It’s the dead centre of Europe
Admittedly several nations have laid claim to being bang in the middle of the continent – Belarus and Hungary to name two – but the spot near the village of Purnuškės has the backing of the scientific community. A monument marks the spot, while the nearby Europos Parkas hosts the world’s largest sculpture made of TV sets. What are you waiting for?

2. It’s as cheap as chips
Not convinced yet? Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, regularly ranks as one of the cheapest city breaks in Europe, with a pint likely to cost below €2.50. “Spend time wandering along the wonderfully atmospheric cobbled streets of the largest medieval old town in central and eastern Europe,” says Telegraph Travel's Adrian Bridge. “Take in an architectural heritage that blends elements of baroque, gothic, renaissance and Russian, and join young locals in all-night party mode.” Don't mind if we do.

3. It’s one big film set
The BBC filmed much of its recent War and Peace drama in Lithuania and neighbouring Latvia. “Lithuania has been making films for years,” wrote John Gimlette, who travelled on a War and Peace tour for Telegraph Travel. “Usually it plays the role of Russia, although it has also been Tudor England (Elizabeth I) and even Sherwood Forest (Robin Hood).”

4. This hill of crosses is the stuff of nightmares
Just north of the city of Siauliai, the Hill of Crosses is believed to have come into being after a battle in 1831 at the site. Since, crosses and crucifixes large and small, as well statues of the Virgin Mary and Lithuanian patriots, have been left by Catholic pilgrims. The hill is now home to some 100,000 crosses.

5. Not content with a hill of crosses?
There’s a hill of witches, too. A stone’s throw from the Curonian Spit (more on that later), this outdoor sculpture gallery near Juodkrante features about 80 wooden characters linked to Lithuanian folklore and pagan traditions.

6. Lithuania is mates with Iceland
And everyone loves Iceland. The country was the first to recognise Lithuania as an independent state in 1991. Islandijos Street (Iceland Street) near Vilnius city centre is a testament to a fraternity still held.

7. It boasts tremendous sand dunes
Lithuania shares half of the Curonian Spit, a 61-mile strip of sand dunes that keeps the Curonian from the Baltic Sea. A Unesco World Heritage Site, it is home to the highest moving sand dunes in Europe, with an average height of 35 metres and some stretching to 60 metres. Matthias Lüfkens visited for Telegraph Travel: “Pine trees carpet this slither of a sand dune – a rare natural wonder, preserved in an almost perfect state by the region's former Soviet rulers, who forbade any foreigner to set foot on it.”

8. There are three other World Heritage Sites, too
The other sites protected by Unesco are charming historic centre of Vilnius; the Kernavė Archaeological Site, which boasts a testimony to some 10,000 years of human settlement; and the Struve Geodetic Arc, a chain of markers linking 10 countries across Europe.

9. It has almighty internet
Believe it or not, the Baltic state enjoys one of the fastest internet upload speeds in the world, owing to having the most fibre-optic broadband capacity in Europe.

10. Vilnius boasts this gorgeous cathedral
The neoclassical church was completed in 1783.

11. Its university is equally impressive
It is one of the oldest such institutions in northern Europe, founded in 1579.

12. It was once the largest country in Europe
Another surprising fact given its modern day size, but Lithuania, as the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, was the largest nation in Europe, taking in parts of present-day Belarus, Ukraine, Poland and Russia.

13. It has monuments to its tumultuous past
Occupied by both Nazis and Soviets in the 20th century, the remarkably family-friendly Grutas Park, near Druskininkai, is the final resting place of an array of USSR-era status and relics removed from around the country after it regained its independence in 1991. There is also an exhibition on life in Lithuania under the Soviet Union.

14. And if you’re into that kind of thing…
You'll love the decommissioned Soviet nuclear missile base at Žemaitija National Park.

Utena's rhythm!

Utena is situated in an exceptionally picturesque location – amid the lakes Dauniškis and Vyžuonaitis. For the 750th anniversary of the town a unique attraction – shining and playing fountain with water screen - was equipped in Lake Dauniškis.

The land of Utena is fascinating during all the seasons: in summer holiday-makers are enticed by wonderful Lake Alaušas, in winter – many car racing fans are attracted by the popular rally. Holiday-makers are welcome to cosy homesteads of rural tourism, the number of which exceeds forty in the land of Utena.

Guests of Utena may visit the only in Lithuania Museum of Ceramics and try to throw a pot by their own hands.

The residents of Utena are hospitable eastern Aukštaitians who will make every guest welcome and willingly show around the town and obligingly accompany them. Come and make sure that Utena is indeed the town of happy people!

Stunning Lake Trip & WOOD FIRED PORK BELLY in Lithuanian National Park!

We're out on the beautiful Lithuanian lakes & cooking Pork Belly over a wood fire! It's a seriously stunning lake trip and an amazing day of eating!

We're in the small village of Tauragnai, close to Utena Lithuania, in the beautiful Lithuanian National Park as part of our Eastern European Food Tour. The Lithuanian countryside is stunning - this lake Lithuania celebrates as the deepest - over 60 meters at it's deepest point, and it's perimeter is 26 kilometers!

We then light the fire ready for some outdoor wood fire cooking & a relaxing BBQ - Paprika & Herb marinated Pork Shoulder Steaks & AMAZING trick & crispy Pork Belly! Traditional Lithuanian Food is fantastic - almost exclusively made from two simple ingredients - meat & potatoes, but it's truly astonishing just how many different delicious dishes Lithuanians can make from those two simple ingredients. A simple outdoor wood fire BBQ grill is all you need!

Vilnius Historic Centre, Lithuania - World Heritage Journeys

As the political centre of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from the 13th to the end of the 18th century, Vilnius has had a profound influence on the cultural and architectural development of much of eastern Europe. The historic centre includes buildings in the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classical styles which have been well preserved over time. It is also home to one of the greatest love stories in Baltic history.

Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994, Vilnius is an excellent example of a European city that grew with influences from multiple cultures, religions, and languages—and has been well preserved.
