Welcome to Urk! A place that could be considered the most conservative place in the Netherlands, if you look at its political affiliation, traditional mindset of the population and foreign language skills.
Urk is (or was) a fishing village in the province of Flevoland that has a significant inflow of tourists. We mainly saw German, English and Dutch tourists at the harbour.
We visit the museum of Urk and after that we eat at the old bakery. The advantage Urk has over more modern places is that the food is traditional and therefore very tasty. That's one of the many positive experiences we had in what's seen as the most conservative place in the Netherlands.
We found Urk to be a great place to visit because of its beautiful buildings and heartwarming people so if you are not sure about visiting Urk hopefully this video will help you decide!

Flevoland ist die jüngste Provinz der Niederlande. Die Polderlandschaft ist heute die größte künstlich angelegte Landfläche der Welt, Lebensraum für rund 400.000 Menschen und außerdem ein Naturparadies. Andrea Grießmann reist durch eine Gegend mit kurvenlosen Straßen und schnurgraden Feldern, entdeckt Inseln, die auf dem Trockenen liegen, und Orte mit jahrhundertealter Nordseetradition.
Flevoland steht für Altes und Neues: Die Stadt Almere entstand vor 40 Jahren komplett auf dem Reißbrett und ist ein Beispiel für modernes Wohnen. Die ehemalige Insel Schokland, heute Weltkulturerbe, lädt ein zu einer Zeitreise von der Eiszeit bis zur Gegenwart.
An vielen Stellen findet Andrea Grießmann moderne Landschaftskunstwerke mitten in der Natur. Platz zum Schwimmen, Segeln oder Angeln gibt es auf Flevoland natürlich auch satt.

The largest man-made island is located in The Netherlands and is called the Flevopolder. It is located in the province of Flevoland and today I will make a road trip through this region. I will start my video in the biggest city on the Island, Almere. The video also includes iconic locations like national park the Oostvaardersplassen, the 17th century Dutch trading ship the Batavia and the two former Island Urk and Schokland of which the latter is an Unesco World Heritage Site. #Volendam is a small town about 20 km away from Amsterdam and is known for beautifully colored wooden houses that look like a painting. Urk is a municipality and a town in the Flevoland province in the central Netherlands.
Urk is first mentioned in historical records dating to the 10th century, when it was still an island in the Almere, a lake that would become part of the Zuiderzee in the 13th century after a series of incursions by the North Sea. In 1939, a dike from the mainland to Urk ended the town's island status, just as the Afsluitdijkproject was changing the salt water Zuiderzee surrounding Urk to the less saline IJsselmeer. Later in the 20th century, seabed areas surrounding Urk werereclaimed from the sea and became the Noordoostpolder.
The mainstay of the town's economy has always been fishing, and the products of the sea coming in through Urk's harbour continue to be exported widely, although today Urk's fishing boats must travel greater distances to gather them than was required in most historical periods. Religious life has also traditionally been very important to Urk's inhabitants, with active, conservative congregations of the Dutch Reformed denominations playing key roles in the life of the community.

Urk is een voormalig eiland en huidige gemeente in Nederland. Met 19.989 inwoners (1 januari 2016) op een oppervlakte van circa 11,54 km² (en 98,36 km² water) is Urk qua oppervlakte de kleinste gemeente van de Nederlandse provincie Flevoland. Tot het gereedkomen in 1939 van de dijk die Urk met Lemmer verbond was Urk een eiland in het IJsselmeer, de voormalige (tot de afwerking van de Afsluitdijk in 1932) Zuiderzee. In 1942 werd de Noordoostpolder drooggemalen maar voor de inwoners van Urk leeft het eilandgevoel nog steeds; men woont bijvoorbeeld niet in Urk maar op Urk.
Urk kan worden omschreven als de meest kerkelijke gemeente van Nederland. Het is een zeer hechte en gesloten gemeenschap. Het plaatselijke dialect, het Urkers, is nog buitengewoon vitaal en wijkt veel af van de andere dialecten uit de omgeving. Urk heeft ook zijn eigen volkslied. Het Urker volkslied wordt voornamelijk gezongen tijdens de jaarlijkse aubade op Koningsdag en overige officiële gelegenheden. Urk heeft heden ten dage verreweg de grootste vissersvloot en visverwerkende industrie van Nederland.

Volendam is a village in North Holland in the Netherlands, in the municipality of Edam-Volendam. The town has about 22,000 inhabitants (November 2007) and is twinned with Coventry.
Volendam is a popular tourist attraction in the Netherlands, well known for its old fishing boats and the traditional clothing still worn by some residents. The women's costume of Volendam, with its high, pointed bonnet, is one of the most recognizable of the Dutch traditional costumes, and is often featured on tourist postcards and posters (although there are believed to be fewer than 50 women now wearing the costume as part of their daily lives, most of them elderly). There is a regular ferry connection to Marken, a peninsula close by. Volendam also features a small museum about its history and clothing style, and visitors can have their pictures taken in traditional Dutch costumes.
