Tourism Italy : Visit Umbria, 8 best places to discover

Green heart of Italy

Often compared to Tuscany for its landscapes, Umbria, thanks to the Apennines, has more relief. This region is also better preserved from tourism and has a more secret and authentic facet.

The main tourist attractions of the region are the villages, very well restored but still very medieval, as well as the architecture and monuments of the cities of art.

Moreover the region is characterised by large hills, mountains (the highest point in the region is Monte Vettore at 2,476 metres (8,123 feet)), and valley : the Umbrian valley ( Valle Umbra ), and the Tiber Valley ( Val Tiberina ) this is why the green heart of Italy will appeal to all nature lovers.

PREGGIO - Umbria - Italy

Preggio is one of the most scenic hilltop hamlets in Italy. This historic little settlement has protected remains of Etruscan walls dating to the 4th century BC.
Close to the cities of Umbertide and Perugia, where there's an international airport, it is incredibly well connected yet feels incredibly remote. At night, all you'll hear are the birds and the odd dog barking down in the valley. In cooler times you'll see smoke from chimneys and in summer, you have the most beautiful low lying clouds in the morning before the day warms up.

Cars are seldom seen let alone heard and life here is quiet, and traditional. There's just one small restaurant and shop, which also plays the role of the village bar. Olive trees and cacti are common, and the light here, as you can see in this short film, is nothing short of spectacular.

Nearby you also have the forth largest lake in Italy, Lake Trasimeno, with its picturesque lake side settlements, islands and of course plenty of excellent places to eat and drink.

Ride 169 - Riding the valleys around Umbertide, Italy in the hot sun

Today is Wednesday, May 18, 2022 and this is day 4 of my 6 day cycling adventure in Umbria. It is a noticeably cooler day today. I am so happy about that, even if it still around 25 Celcius.

As usual, we are starting this ride in the village of Lisciano Niccone where we are staying for the week at the beautiful Agriturismo le Fornaci, a hotel converted from an old farm house. In addition to Tim and Roberto from Inspired Italy, our group is comprised of David from LA, Bob from Florida, Oscar from Majorca, Robyn from Aberdeen, Scotland, and Leonard, Jatin and Calvin from various parts of England.

For this ride, we are going to head to Umbertide and then ride through some lovely valleys before returning to Umbertide to meet up with the girls for cappuccino. I heard this might be a 100km ride but who knows. As it turned out, our ride was only 75 kms.

Umbertide is an Italian municipality in the province of Perugia in Umbria. It is located exactly in the upper valley of the Tiber River, crossed by the Tiber itself with a characteristic and evocative historic center surrounded by medieval walls in the sections that border the waterways. The area offers the possibility of wonderful making in the green areas of the city, in the surrounding hills dotted with castles. Its history is very ancient, several are the Roman testimonies, according to ancient tradition it was rebuilt in the ninth century and according to other scholars in the tenth century under the name of Fracta filorum Huberti or simply Fratta.
The presence of Renaissance and Mannerist artists make this village an art town worth a thorough visit.

❓Curiosity:

✱ ????The town ran into a serious moment of danger when the Tuscan army (1643) advanced into papal territory to assert the supremacy of the Lords of Florence over the Church State. The Florentines on several occasions attempted to occupy Fratta, but eventually, perhaps discouraged by a great flood of the Tiber, left the siege and retreated to Tuscany. The inhabitants attributed the grace of escaping the fury of the besieging troops to the ancient image of the Madonna venerated in the church of S. Maria della Reggia , and from then on the inscription F.O.V. placed under the civic coat of arms took on the meaning of Fracta Oppidum Virginis.

✱????Some scholars believe it was founded by the Etruscans, others by the ancient people of the Umbrians. A widespread tradition has it that Umbertide was Cunicolo dell'Umbertide sotterraneafounded, under the name of Pitulum or Oppidum Saepis, by Roman soldiers from the legions of Consul Flaminius, who had escaped the disastrous battle of Trasimeno (217 B.C.), and who would have scattered in disorderly flight through the mountains behind the lake, which they would then descend again to reach the Tevere valley.

Todi, Umbria, Italy - main shopping street and grand piazza

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
We are taking another look at Todi in Umbria, Italy, featuring all new scenes.
Spending some quality time on the main shopping street, and in the grand piazza, a fine place to see the locals of all ages out playing, and strolling and talking with their friends. It's the most historic part of town. We will also walk along some of the interesting side streets.
Some lanes turn into staircases, because Todi is a hill town, and from different perspectives you get great views looking out across the countryside.
You'll see a beautiful fountain right along the central part of the main shopping street on the small Piazza Bartolomeo d’Alviano. The eagle statue at the center is a symbol of the city of Todi. Traditionally he's the bird that chose this location to build a city, with shops and pizzerias nearby.
Todi only has one main shopping street. Here it is called Corso Cavour, and a little bit lower down, it changes names to via Roma, lined with very interesting shops for locals and visitors alike. Coming out of the southeast corner of Piazza Del Popolo, you can't miss it.
The streets were obviously laid out way before there was any automobiles, perhaps as far back as the Roman times, and they were for pedestrians, and horses, and cows, and goats and other animals, but now it's adapted to the modern world where we can have a mix of cars and people.
Of course, being Italy, you will always find wonderful places to eat – pizza, pasta and salad are the basics, accompanied by some local wine, perhaps at an outdoor terrace that offers a spectacular view across the countryside.
Corso Cavour runs along the hillside ridge but you can easily walk down and get a different view, looking straight across into the town itself, looking across the fertile farmlands of the valley and then back up at the town. Return up a convenient staircase and you're soon back on the main street again.
This is part three of our series on this wonderful hilltown.

Among its cobbled alleys, in the frescoed churches, in the shadow of its monuments, Spello preserves the signs of its long history: Roman, Lombard, of popes and lords. There are numerous remains from the Roman era when Spello, or rather Hispellum, was splendid colony Julia first by Julius Caesar and then by Augustus.
The remains of the walls, much wider in the past than we can admire today, attest to the greatness that the city had, as well as the archaeological remains that surround it. Devastating for Spello was the descent into Italy of the Barbarians who reduced it from a populous city to a poor hamlet.
The walls boasts six intact Roman gates, such as Porta Venere with the two massive towers of Properzio in white travertine, Porta Urbica and Porta Consolare. The center contains many places of interest mostly of Catholic worship, as evidenced by the number of bell towers visible also from the valley floor, between a cypress and an holm oak. The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (12th - 13th century) houses the Baglioni Chapel, named after the Counts of Spello, frescoed by Pinturicchio.

Curiosity:
✱????The village of Spello is distinguished by a festivity very popular with the citizens, the Infiorata which takes place every year at the end of May, on the occasion of Corpus Domini. The streets of Spello are filled with carpets made, throughout the previous day, with flower petals, true works of art - about 60 - that cover more than a kilometer. This is the path in which, the day after the floral arrangement of the streets, the Corpus Domini procession unfolds, in the presence of the bishop, the Spellans and many tourists.

✱???? This locality stands out for the conservation and usability of the numerous elements of historical and cultural interest present and for the high urban and architectural quality of the historic center, within which there are also some accommodation facilities, well integrated into the context surrounding. Also of note is the variety and quality of the events that take place throughout the year, all adequately promoted by an excellent tourist information service. Marta, ghost visitor TCI Orange Flag
