Facts About Mongolia
**************************************************************************
Mongolia, a nation bordered by China and Russia, is known for vast, rugged expanses and nomadic culture. Its capital, Ulaanbaatar, centers around Chinggis Khaan (Genghis Khan) Square, named for the notorious founder of the 13th- and 14th-century Mongol Empire. Also in Ulaanbaatar are the National Museum of Mongolia, displaying historic and ethnographic artifacts, and the restored 1830 Gandantegchinlen Monastery.
Landlocked Mongolia is located between Russia to the north and China to the south, deep within the interior of eastern Asia far from any ocean. The country has a marked continental climate, with long cold winters and short cool-to-hot summers. Its remarkable variety of scenery consists largely of upland steppes, semideserts, and deserts, although in the west and north forested high mountain ranges alternate with lake-dotted basins. Mongolia is largely a plateau, with an average elevation of about 5,180 feet (1,580 metres) above sea level. The highest peaks are in the Mongolian Altai Mountains (Mongol Altain Nuruu) in the southwest, a branch of the Altai Mountains system.
Mongolia holds the Guinness World Record for the largest wrestling competition in the world. This was for the Mongolian National Wrestling Match in 2011.There are 13 times more horses in Mongolia than humans.
Genghis Khan himself was illiterate, however, he introduced the first writing system to Mongolia in the early 13th century. He borrowed this script from the script of the Uyghurs. This script is written vertically from left to right.
Mongolia adopted the Latin alphabet in the 1930s. It was then replaced with the Cyrillic alphabet in 1941, with two additional letters (ö and ü sounds) otherwise not found in Russian.
Mongolia can be divided into three major topographic zones: the mountain chains that dominate the northern and western areas, the basin areas situated between and around them, and the enormous upland plateau belt that lies across the southern and eastern sectors. The entire country is prone to seismic movements, and some earthquakes are extremely severe. Their effects, however, are limited by the low population density.
Mongolian native horses are the last truly wild horses left on the planet. They have 66 chromosomes, one or two more than the average horse.
A mother with five or more children is celebrated as an Honoured Mother.
Throat singers in Mongolia use the technique to sing through their throat and nose at the same time, producing two different sounds simultaneously. This is popular whilst riding a horse.

Drive across western Mongolia from Little Switzerland to Olgii

After exploring the Baga Turgen area in western Mongolia, aptly called Mongolia’s little Switzerland, we drove back to Olgii. The route was first thru Little Switzerland and then the Khovd River valley and then barren colourful hills and small villages. My trip was arranged and managed by Altai Nomads Travel.

0:00 My idyllic camp in Baga Turgen (Mongolia’s little Switzerland) 2175m

0:11 Our driver Kosmos caught fish in the river, cooked them and gave me three for breakfast - delicious

0:21 We left Baga Turgen at 10:30am and soon crossed a short wooden bridge

0:48 And then at 11am we crossed an old wooden bridge

1:02 The bridge was over a wide channel that connects Khurgan and Khoton freshwater lakes

1:13 We drove along Khurgan Lake

1:29 We drove to the top of a hill and looked back at Khurgan Lake and Little Switzerland at 11:50am after driving for 80 minutes

1:45 The drive now was back to the barren expansive landscape

1:55 We then entered the Khovd River gorge

2:06 And stopped for lunch at 12 noon next to the Khovd River

2:21 The idyllic Khovd River flows thru a gorge in Western Mongolia

After lunch at 12:45 cook Fiko, guide Shokhan and I continued our drive toward Olgii

2:51 We drove thru Khushuut village at 13:20
And then back to the barren landscape

3:05 The route climbed to the crest of a hill
3:15 And then back down the other side

3:25 And then thru a colourful eroded canyon

4:01 And then thru the village of Uujim at 14:45

4:21 And passed colourful hills in the afternoon sun

4:38 The route then went thru another colourful canyon

5:18 And then entered the outskirts of Olgii

5:40 And then thru Olgii
To our modern comfortable hotel at 15:20, about 5 hours after leaving Baga Turgen

5:52 Then the next day I flew back to Ulaanbaatar and home

Ulaanbaatar, formerly anglicised as Ulan Bator /ˌuːlɑːn ˈbɑːtər/ (Mongolian: Улаанбаатар, [ʊɮɑːm.bɑːtʰɑ̆r], literally Red Hero), is the capital and largest city of Mongolia. The city is not part of any aimag (province), and its population as of 2014 was over 1.3 million, almost half of the country's total population. Located in north central Mongolia, the municipality lies at an elevation of about 1,300 meters (4,300 ft) in a valley on the Tuul River. It is the country's cultural, industrial and financial heart, the centre of Mongolia's road network and connected by rail to both the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia and the Chinese railway system.

From :

The city was founded in 1639 as a nomadic Buddhist monastic centre. It settled permanently at its present location, the junction of the Tuul and Selbe rivers, in 1778. Prior to that occasion it changed location twenty-eight times, each new location being chosen ceremonially. In the twentieth century, Ulaanbaatar grew into a major manufacturing center. Ulaanbaatar is a member of the Asian Network of Major Cities 21. The city's official website lists Moscow, Hohhot, Seoul, Sapporo and Denver as sister cities.

Ulaanbaatar has been given numerous names in its history. Before 1911, official names included Nomiĭn Khüree (Mongolian: ᠨᠣᠮ ᠤᠨ ᠬᠦᠷᠢᠶᠡᠨ; Номын хүрээ) and Ikh Khüree (ᠶᠡᠬᠡ ᠬᠦᠷᠢᠶᠡᠨ; Их Хүрээ; lit. Great Settlement). It is called Bogdiin Khuree (Богдын Хүрээ, Bogdiĭn Khüree, Great Holy Khan's Monastery) in the folk song Praise of Bogdiin Khuree. Other names were Da Khüree (Да Хүрээ, dà, great), or simply Khüree (ᠬᠦᠷᠢᠶᠡᠨ; Хүрээ). The Chinese equivalent, Dà Kùlún (大庫倫), was rendered into Western languages as Kulun or Kuren. In western languages, the city at that time was most often referred to as Urga (from Mongolian: ᠥᠷᠭᠦᠭᠡ; Өргөө, Örgöö, Palace).

Upon independence in 1911, with both the secular government and the Bogd Khan's palace present, the city's name was changed to Niĭslel Khüree (ᠨᠡᠶᠢᠰᠯᠡᠯ ᠬᠦᠷᠢᠶᠡᠨ; Нийслэл Хүрээ, Capital Camp).

When the city became the capital of the new Mongolian People's Republic in 1924, its name was changed to Ulaanbaatar (Улаанбаатар, Ulaanbaatar, classical Mongolian Ulaganbagatur, literally Red Hero). On the session of the 1st Great People's Khuraldaan of Mongolia in 1924, a majority of delegates expressed their wish to change the capital city's name to Baatar Khot (Hero City). However, under pressure from Turar Ryskulov, a Soviet activist of the Communist International, the city was named Ulaanbaatar Khot (City of Red Hero).

In Europe and North America, Ulaanbaatar continued to be generally known as Urga or Khure until 1924, and afterward as Ulan Bator (a spelling derived from Улан-Батор, Ulan-Bator). The Russian spelling (Улан-Батор) is the Russian phonetic equivalent of the Mongolian name, according to Russian spelling conventions. This form was defined two decades before the Mongolian name got its current Cyrillic script spelling and Ulaanbaatar transliteration (1941–1950); however, the name of the city was spelled Ulaanbaatar koto during the decade in which Mongolia used the Latin alphabet. Today, English speakers sometimes refer to the city as UB.
