Cycling around Tuusula, August 2020, Finland [4K]

Cycling around Tuusula, near the lake of Tuusulanjärvi, August 2020, Finland.

The Tuusulanjärvi lake attracted many artists in late 19th century. Composer Jean Sibelius, writer Juhani Aho, poet J. H. Erkko and painter Pekka Halonen even established their main residences here. Recently these houses have become tourist sites. On my route I also pass by the cottage of Aleksis Kivi, the Finnish national poet who spent the last years of his life in a hut on the shores of the lake,

Hello, welcome to almost the last scene of the winter season 2022/'23.
The first 10 minutes were filmed on a beautiful winter day in March, the second part was shot in February as the sun was setting.
How would you feel if i told you that there is about 6 meters of water under our feet?
The surface of the lake is about 6 km² and its average depth is 3.2 meters.
The deepest point of the lake is 9.8 meters.
But as you can see, we are not alone and it's perfectly safe to walk.
It is amazing to see such a large, completely frozen body of water become a great winter sports destination for ice skating, cross country skiing, biking and walking.

Lake Tuusula is a nationally significant destination in the era of national romanticism in Finland.
It has been immortalized in artwork painted by artists who lived on its shores.
In 2017, the Finnish Nature Association chose Lake Tuusula as one of Finland's 100 Natural Gems.
The southern half of the lake is part of the city of Tuusula and the northern half is maintained by the city of Järvenpää.
If given the choice, would you try ice skating, cross-country skiing or walking?
Thank you, i had a fun time filming and i hope you enjoy it.

Good evening scene walker ????
Summer is just around the corner now, the nights are getting lighter every day.
As in Lapland, the sun in southern Finland does not really set, albeit to a lesser extent.
In this scene i take you along the peaceful beautiful old church of Tuusula.
Located on the shores of Tuusulanjärvi (Lake Tuusula).

To know more we will have to go back in time to the 17th century.
When most of the villages in Tuusula belonged to the parish of Sipoo.
At that time, the Orthodox Church began to demand attendance more often.
The 15 km long journey eventually began to feel unbearable.
Added to the problems was the Swedish-speaking pastor of Sipoo and the Finnish-speaking people of Tuusula.
The anger of the people grew and in 1643 a simple modest log cabin was built on roughly this location.
However, they did not have permission to build a church.
Finally, in 1654, the Bishop of Turku founded the independent congregation.
The church, made of poor logs, soon rotted and became neglected.
The new and current building was built between 1732 - 1734.
Designed by Erik Hannula, the father of Aleksis Kivi's grandfather.
Aleksis Kivi (1834 - 1872) is considered one of Finland's greatest national writers.
The church is built in a simple cruciform style, its origins comes from the Italian Renaissance. Developed further in the Netherlands, from where it spread to Finland via Sweden.

The old church of Tuusula is one of the oldest surviving cruciform churches in Finland.
The current color scheme of the church was designed by the famous painter Pekka Halonen (1865 - 1933).
The current 21-voice organ was acquired in 1971.
The first heating device was installed in 1889 and replaced with electric heating in 1952.
Electric lighting was installed in 1923.
The church bells date from 1903 and were automated in 1984.
There is room for up to 480 people.

The old cemetery has been in use from the 1640s to the 1890s.
The old tombs tell the history of Tuusula.
When it was in use, it was blessed with about 20,000 deceased.
There are 180 tombstones left, most dating from the 19th century.
Perhaps the most important attraction of the cemetery is the artist's graves.
Because of them, the cemetery is a protected cultural monument.
The most significant resting place here is the national writer Aleksis Kivi.
In Addition to Kivi, the Finnish painter Pekka Halonen is also buried here.
The Heroes' of War cemetery, towards the lake, is guarded by a monument depicting 2 soldiers in snow suits.
The Returnless Road, a granite statue created by sculptor Rakel Koivisto (1917 - 2009).
~170 men and one Lotta are buried here, the last hero burial was carried out in 2003.
Members of Lotta Svärd were a voluntary paramilitary organization for women.
Formed in 1918 in support of the White Guard and mobilized during World War II to replace conscripted men.

Today, Tuusula Church is still in use all year round. It is a popular wedding location, especially in summer.
Thank you for joining, have a nice day and hope to see you again in the next scene ????.
Together we learn, explore and walk through the scenes. ????????

HAMEENLINNA, FINLAND | Gateway to EUROPE'S LARGEST Lake District (Finnish Lakeland)

HAMEENLINNA, FINLAND: Exploring one of Finland’s oldest cities & walking around the beautiful lakes & castles situated on the edge of Europe’s largest lake district - Finnish Lakeland.
???????? See more of my travel vlogs from Finland here →

Visiting Hameenlinna is a straightforward and relatively cheap train ride from either Helsinki or Tampere. I came from the latter with plans to see as much as I could in one well executed day trip. My aim was to spend most of the day in the city and then perhaps a few hours down by the lakes and forests of Aulanko Nature Reserve - enjoying the tranquillity that the great outdoors can bring.

After arriving at one of Finland’s oldest railway stations I headed down to the lake and picked up a well maintained trail that led me through the trees, across the wetland and past several abandoned buildings. There were some wonderful view points as I followed the lakes shoreline, several looking out across to the brick built Hameenlinna Castle and others equipped with tables and seating to just watch the vast waterline of the lake. There were plenty of birds chirping and leaves falling - even an express train or two passing.

After an hour or so I arrived at a magnificent granite castle that served as the entrance to the Aulanko Nature Reserve & Historical Site. The sign listed more castles, swan lakes, hiking trails, bird watching areas, play zones, caves and swimming places so I headed inside. I weaved across a few trails until I got lost in the woods, and just when I was about to re-examine the map I stumbled upon a spectacular lookout tower and viewpoint looking out over the lakes and forest below. It has to be seen to be believed! I was really enjoying my trip to Hameenlinna.

Having spent a few more hours than I planned at Aulanko I walked back towards the city, this time I crossed a fairly modern-looking railway bridge and followed a trail on the other side of the lake back to Häme Castle. I spent an hour exploring the brick structure and learning about its history before continuing on towards the city centre of Hameenlinna.

There I enjoyed walking by a number of old wooden houses and a much more contemporary church (Hämeenlinnan kirkko) that dominated the main square. I also caught up with the statue of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and gazed upon his childhood home that still stands in the heart of the city.

Helsinki was founded in 1550 by King Gustav I Vasa of Sweden and was intended to compete with the city of Reval (now Tallinn, Estonia), which lies on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland. Helsinki was originally located at the mouth of the Vantaa River, at a point about 4.8 km north of its present day location, and was moved down to the latter site in 1640 in order to obtain more open access to the sea. The town was ravaged by a plague in 1710 and burned to the ground in 1713. Its redevelopment was hindered by Russian attacks later in the 18th century, but in 1748 the settlement became more secure when a fortress, called Sveaborg by the Swedes and Suomenlinna by the Finns, was constructed on a group of small islands outside the harbour.

When Russia invaded Finland in 1808, Helsinki was again burned to the ground. But in 1809 Finland was ceded to Russia, and in 1812 the Russian tsar Alexander I moved the capital of the grand duchy of Finland from Turku (Åbo) to Helsinki. Meanwhile, the centre of Helsinki had been completely reconstructed under the influence of the German-born architect Carl Ludwig Engel, who designed a number of impressive public buildings in the Neoclassical style. These include the state council building, the main building of Helsinki University, and the Lutheran cathedral, known as the Great Church, completed in 1852. All of these structures surround the broad expanse of Senate Square. Nearby rise the cupolas of the Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, one of the few recognizable reminders of the period of Russian rule.

Despite the tumultuous nature of Finnish history during the first half of the 20th century (including the Finnish Civil War and the Winter War which both left marks on the city), Helsinki continued its steady development. A landmark event was the 1952 Olympic Games, held in Helsinki. Finland's rapid urbanization in the 1970s, occurring late relative to the rest of Europe, tripled the population in the metropolitan area, and the Helsinki Metro subway system was built. The relatively sparse population density of Helsinki and its peculiar structure have often been attributed to the lateness of its growth.

YouTube channel Exploring Namibia TV publishes four video a week: on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Themes range from travelling in Africa to exploring Europe and Russia.
