Salzburg, Austria, a city renowned for its musical heritage, historical significance, and the natural beauty that surrounds it, is a destination that captivates visitors from around the globe. Known as the City of Mozart, the City of Music, and intriguingly, the City of Salt, Salzburg's name, translating to Salt Castle, hints at its historical importance in the salt trade, with the Salzach River once bustling with barges carrying this precious mineral. This enchanting city, nestled amidst majestic cliffs and Baroque architecture, offers a myriad of experiences that weave together the threads of history, culture, and natural splendor.

Our journey through Salzburg begins with a ride on the funicular, leading us to the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress. Perched atop a cliff, this fortress is not only a symbol of Salzburg's medieval might but also a treasure trove of museums that narrate tales of yore. Within its walls, visitors can explore a vast collection of artifacts that bring to life the city's storied past.

The exploration continues as we delve into the early Christian catacombs, etched into the very rock upon which the city stands, and wander through the serene Petersfriedhof, a cemetery that reflects the solemn beauty of Salzburg's history. The old town, with its iconic Baroque architecture, domes, and spires, offers panoramic views that are simply breathtaking.

Culinary adventures await with a sampling of Austrian foods, where traditional flavors tell stories of Salzburg's cultural heritage. Beyond the city's historical and gastronomic offerings, Salzburg serves as a gateway to picturesque day trips, from the historic Werfen to the hiking trails of Gaisberg, each adventure promising its own unique set of memories.

Not to be missed are the landmarks that pay homage to Salzburg's most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with visits to his birthplace and the vibrant Mozart Square. The Kollegienkirche and the tranquil stroll along the Salzach River further enrich the Salzburg experience, leading visitors to the splendid Mirabell Palace and Gardens, an epitome of Baroque garden design.

The journey through Salzburg is made effortless with the city's efficient transportation system, ensuring that every corner of this historic city is within easy reach. From the serene Salzach Island Bar to the majestic views atop Mönchsberg, Salzburg invites travelers to immerse themselves in its rich tapestry of culture, history, and natural beauty.

This comprehensive travel guide to Salzburg is but an introduction to the myriad experiences that await in this Austrian gem. Each visit uncovers new facets of Salzburg's charm, inviting travelers to return, explore, and discover the depths of this city's enchanting allure.

★ 4K ???????? Bludenz - Arlberg - Giselabahn - St. Pölten - Tulln, cab ride across Austria [02.2021]

In this video, we'll be travelling across northern Austria, from west to east in a very rare 6 axle electric locomotive from 1960, known as the ÖBB class 1110. We start in Bludenz, an alpine town located at the meeting point of 5 valleys in the Vorarlberg which, borders with Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany.

For the first part of our journey we'll take the Arlberg railway to Innsbruck, the second highest standard gauge railway in Austria, after the Brenner. Completed in 1884 with gradients of up to 3.1%, it proved to be very challenging to operate. Not only were there traction difficulties; avalanches, rockfalls, landslides and floods all posed serious challenges.
Over the years, avalanche galleries, tunnels and diversions have been built to overcome some of these dangers. These have all been labelled with their respective year of completion during the video. Former routes are also shown. The numbers that appear at the top right indicate the highest gradient in the section between two stations in permille (a tenth of a percent).
More tunnels are in planning for the Arlberg railway, so we have to enjoy the views while we can!

We then take the lower Inn valley railway to Wörgl, which serves as the north - south connection from Germany to Italy via the Brenner railway. From Wörgl, we'll take the Salzburg - Tyrol railway to Salzburg, also known as the Giselabahn, named after the Archduchess Gisela of Austria, the second daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I. With its tight curves and gradients of up to 2.6%, it's not suited for express trains, which predominantly take the shortcut through Germany via Rosenheim.

From Salzburg we'll take the old Westbahn line towards Vienna, which we have partly seen in the opposite direction in a previous video (Vienna - Passau:

The speeds displayed indicate the highest allowable speed until a new speed is displayed.

Tulln an der Donau (Tulln on the Danube)

Tulln on the Danube (Tulln an der Donau) is a historic city on the Danube River outside Vienna in Niederösterreich (Lower Austria). There has been a known settlement at the location of Tulln on the banks of the Danube since at least Roman times.

Today Tulln on the Danube is best known for two other reasons than its Roman heritage. it is the birthplace of the renowned expressionistic artist - Egon Schiele. Indeed they have a museum devoted to his early life and career. Second, Tulln is a lovely garden city and the home of the famed Tulln Gardens. These gardens are Europe's largest ecological and organic gardens. The tree walk above the treetops is especially famous.

Tulln itself is a very pleasant Austrian city with a picturesque main square, several pedestrian streets with shops and cafes, and some attractive churches and buildings. And all this is only a 30 minute train ride from Vienna and the Franz Josef Bahnhof.

Enjoy this visual tour of Tulln that took place on a daytrip from Vienna shortly after the devastating floods of the Danube in May 2013. The background music is the appropriate waltz Danube Waves by Ion Ivanovici as performed by Andre Rieu and his Orchestra.
