Top 10 Things to See and Do on the Solomon Islands

Get more Tips here!

Taking a trip to the Solomon Islands will be unlike any other vacation you’ve ever experienced. When visiting one of the last untouched destinations in the Pacific, here are 10 things to see and do.

1. See the Traditional Villages
Choose the Kmaga Village experience where you’ll sleep in a beachfront bungalow and receive top-notch hospitality from the villages’ chief and local families.

2. Visit Central Market in Honiara
Head to Central Market in Honiara on the island of Guadalcanal. The stands are lined with crafts made by talented artisans, fresh fish, fruits, and veggies, and handmade souvenirs for you to take back home.

3. Rent a Boat
Various companies offer boat charters, or you can get behind the wheel and navigate the Pacific on your own. But you can always rent a kayak for a few hours and take in the sights as you paddle along the coast.

4. Snorkel in the Bonegis
They are known for being the best places to explore the Solomons’ marine life. Beneath the Pacific, you’ll see beautiful coral reefs, tropical fish, octopus, and maybe even a few shipwrecks from World War II.

5. The Vilu War Museum
The remnants from those battles during WWII with Japanese and American aircrafts can be found at this open-air museum located deep within the forest of Honiara.

6. Go Birdwatching
Grab your binoculars and your long-focus lens camera and make the trek out to Imbu Rano Lodge. Some of the bird species that you’re likely to encounter include parrots, kingfishers, and white-eyes.

7. Travel to Skull Island
Catch a plane to Munda. And take a boat to Vonavona Lagoon to reach the country’s most sacred place: Skull Island. It’s surrounded by human skulls who were killed during the islands’ headhunting days.

8. Chew a Betel Nut
You should take part in some of their traditional ceremonies, including a little bit of betel nut chewing. A betel nut is the brown or yellow seed of the Areca palm, and users have cited a euphoric feeling while chewing on the nut. All we have to say is: chew at your own risk!

9. Hike Up Kolombangara
This volcano last erupted 10,000 years ago. You’ll need a tour guide to lead you along the way and hack away at the overgrown brush that covers the trail. And after two days, you’ll finally reach the crater.

10. Fall in Love With Tenaru Falls
If you enjoy the great outdoors, we guarantee you’ll fall in love with Tenaru Falls near Honiara. To reach the falls, it’s best to rent a 4WD vehicle because it’s no easy trek through the rough and treacherous path. But it’s definitely worth the drive!

Solomon Island Yachter's Travel Guide - What to do in the Solomon Islands

A scattered archipelago of about 1,000 mountainous islands and low-lying coral atolls with scenic land and water adventure is what best describes Solomon Island. You can now decide to experience a totally original and authentic culture by traveling to the Solomon Islands.

It's more than just learning about the amazing cultural legacy. You will also get to explore the depths of the blue-green ocean in search of World War two artifacts. Plus, with a population of just over 2,000 people, you will feel like you have plenty of space to explore.

So if you are ready to take a trip of a lifetime, then I see no reason why you shouldn't opt for a yacht cruise on Solomon Island.

Solomon Islands Travel

Welcome to the Solomon Islands.a very special place… swaying palms, white sandy beaches, warm crystal clear water home to thousands of reef fish, a sacred place, a place where you can pay tribute to past heroes and learn a little of their battles. A place where you can cross a lagoon that you will never forget. A place where you can stay and eat in five star luxury or get away from it all in a home stay over water. A place that embraces the future but still holds on to the past and it’s traditional culture.
The Solomon Islands, Islands adrift in time, A place time passed by… however you describe the Solomons the Solomons are so Solomons so different.

Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands Travel Guide

Papua New Guinea & Solomon Islands Travel Guide

Papua New Guinea is an island nation in Oceania. A country of immense cultural and biological diversity, it’s known for its beaches and coral reefs. Inland are active volcanoes, granite Mt. Wilhelm, dense rain forest and hiking routes like the Kokoda Trail. There are also traditional tribal villages, many with their own languages.

Papua New Guinea is just to the south of the equator and has a tropical climate. In the highlands, though, temperatures are distinctly cool. The (very) wet season runs from about December to March. The best months for trekking are June to September.

Remote and truly beautiful the Solomon Islands is a diver's dream destination. Part of the coral triangle with a staggering diversity of marine species, coral and dive sites, it somehow remains one of the least dived areas of the world. GUADALCANAL; TRIP TO TULAGI

Leaving Pt Cruz in the early morning to go across Ironbottom Sound to Tulagi.

MAP OF THE SOLOMON ISLANDS

greetings my friends. this is a map of the Solomon Islands. Solomon Islands is an island nation that lies east of Papua New Guinea and consists of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands. The major part of the nation of Solomon Islands covers many of the mountainous high islands of the Solomon Islands archipelago, which includes Choiseul, the Shortland Islands, the New Georgia Islands, Santa Isabel, the Russell Islands, the Florida Islands, Tulagi, Malaita, Maramasike, Ulawa, Owaraha ,Santa Ana, Makira ,San Cristobal, and the main island of Guadalcanal. Solomon Islands also includes smaller, isolated low atolls and high islands such as Sikaiana, Rennell Island, Bellona Island, the Santa Cruz Islands and tiny outliers such as Tikopia, Anuta, and Fatutaka. Although Bougainville is the largest island in the Solomon Islands archipelago it is politically an autonomous region of Papua New Guinea and does not form part of the nation of Solomon Islands.

The distance between the westernmost and easternmost islands is about 1,500 kilometres. The Santa Cruz Islands are situated north of Vanuatu and are especially isolated at more than 200 kilometres from the other islands.

The islands' ocean-equatorial climate is extremely humid throughout the year, with a mean temperature of 26.5 °C. and few extremes of temperature or weather. June through August is the cooler period. Though seasons are not pronounced, the northwesterly winds of November through April bring more frequent rainfall and occasional squalls or cyclones. The annual rainfall is about 3,050 millimetres. thats all. please comment and subscribe for the best maps. goodbye.

TULAGI LST 342

LST 342 was cut in half by a Japanese torpedo in July 43.The stern sank, but the bow was towed back to Tulagi and used as a floating post office.

Diving the Solomon Islands - USS Kanawha

USS Kanawha, like the USS Aaron Ward and RNZN Moa, was sunk on the 7th of April 1943. She stayed on station to complete refuelling duties and was at the exit of Tulagi harbour when the air raid struck. The Kanawha was hit in both the forward fuel hold and rear mechanical spaces.

The fires were severe and during the evening, due to water from the fire tugs and sprung hull plates, she could not remain afloat and passed below the waters off Tulagi’s eastern point.

The Kanawha, US Navy Fleet oiler 476’ long, was also a supply vessel for the US Marines. Though it lies in 60 metres it is only 40 metres to the forward deck and 45 metres to the stern deck

Diving the Solomon Islands - Aircrafts

Kawanishi Sea Planes: Before the landing of the Marines on the 7th of August 1942, an air strike was conducted by the US Navy to eliminate the flight boats of the Imperial Japanese Army. As a result, several Kawanishi (codename Mavis) 4 engine reconnaissance / VIP transport seaplanes, were sunk.

PBY Catalina: One evening in September 1943 this PBY Catalina was returning to the Tulagi area after recovering a downed airman, Lt Fred William Howard. On landing on Tulagi harbour just east of the point, the PBY came into contact with a small craft travelling between Tulagi and Gavutu Islands. The aircraft flipped over and started to sink. Fortunately, Lt Howard and the rest of the crew all escaped unharmed. The aircraft righted itself when it sank and now sits upright on the bottom in 26 to 34 metres of water. The Catalina was fitted with radar and the antenna can still be seen under the wing and, as it was in the process of landing, the wing tip floats are in the dropped position.
