The forgotten Soviet spa town - Tskaltubo, Georgia
Tskaltubo was once a thriving spa town. During Soviet times there were 22 sanatoriums in the town. Nowadays, it's almost deserted.
Out of the original 22 sanatoriums, only 2 are now operational. The others have been left to rot and decay. One of these features a bath once used by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.
In some of the others, you will find IDP's (internally displaced people) from the Abkhazia region of Georgia. There were forced to flee their homes shortly after the breakup of the Soviet Union and subsequent territory dispute.
Tskaltubo was an interesting place to visit, a town frozen in time. There is a plan to restore these decaying sanatoriums, time will tell if it ever happens. If you get the chance to visit, then I would definitely recommend it. Especially if you are a urban explorer.

Eerie Urban Exploring in Tskaltubo, Georgia
After leaving Kutaisi on Day 3 of the Karavanly road trip, we headed for the abandoned spa town of Tskaltubo, Georgia, where we did some urban exploring at the eerie sanatoriums and hotels built by Stalin during the soviet era. On the way, we got a tour of a family-run churchkhela factory and visited the breathtaking Okatse Canyon.

Abandoned Places in Tskaltubo Georgia ????????
In this video, I'll be sharing my experience walking around a small village just outside Kutaisi town and exploring abandoned places in Tskaltubo Georgia.
I start off the video walking at the park making my way to an abandoned hotel, and exploring the hotel inside and out, and afterwards on our way to the abandoned spa we bumped into a Georgian wedding that was nice to see the photoshoot, followed by making our way to the abandoned spa. Then we give a quick tour of the Tskaltubo centre and into the bazaar.

Coming from South Africa and never learning much about the Soviet Union we've been fascinated with the history of Eastern Europe ever since visiting Ukraine. Abandoned places... well that's always been a fave.
Tskaltubo is like Chernobyl... without the radiation, you can play around everywhere without risking your life.
It is beautiful and unimaginable that these grand buildings are abandoned
A lot of them are currently used by IDP's (Internally Displaced People) of Georgia. It is ironic how these buildings were build and used by Russia and now they are used by locals... because Russia forced them out of their own homes.

Stalin's Forgotten Spa Town (Tskaltubo, Georgia)
Tskaltubo, Georgia. Tskaltubo is a semi-abandoned Soviet-era spa resort town 15 minutes outside of Kutaisi, Georgia. Tskaltubo is known for its waters of immortality, which once attracted over 100k visitors per year from all over the Soviet Union. Stalin himself was a regular at Tskaltubo's many sanatoriums and bathhouses.
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, so did Tskaltubo’s spa industry. Most of the buildings were abandoned and scavenged for everything of value. In this video, we explore these magnificent urban ruins.

Abandoned Town Stuck in Soviet Era: Tskaltubo // Georgia Travel 2022
Tskaltubo. This town in the country of Georgia used to flourish as one of the most popular Soviet spa resorts.
As the hot springs known for being “waters of immortality” attracted many people from across the Soviet Union to this small town, a lot of sanatoriums and baths were built one after the other.
It’s said that even the former Soviet political leader, Stalin, often vacationed here.
However, those glory days didn’t last forever.
Since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the number of tourists has drastically decreased.
Most hotels and sanatoriums in this Soviet spa resort were shut down and have been abandoned until today.
In this video I’m going to share what I saw and experienced in Tskaltubo, Georgia.
