Traveling to Bulgaria? Watch this video to discover Bulgaria's highlights!

Are you traveling to Bulgaria for your next holiday? Are you still undecided on which countries to choose for your trip to Eastern Europe? If it is going to be your first time in Bulgaria, do not miss these highlights!

The country of Bulgaria in Eastern Europe is packed with historic elements, breathtaking mountain scenery, pristine golden beaches, and numerous churches, fortresses and ruins. Its exotic landscape offers plenty of activities for the adventurous traveler as well.

Sofia is Bulgaria's laid-back capital with some great churches and museums. While many visitors tend to skip the city, it is worth visiting for an authentic Bulgarian experience. Sofia is a modern city, but you will find plenty of buildings, churches and mosques from the yesteryear. Built in the early-20th-century, the massive Aleksander Nevski Cathedral is the most recognised landmark of the city. Sofia History Museum, Boyana Church and Sveta Sofia Church are some of the other highlights in the city. The UNESCO listed Rila Monastery, located around 100 km south of Sofia, is the most popular in Bulgaria and has impressive frescos and architecture. A stronghold of Bulgarian culture during the Ottoman rule, Rila Monastery is also the largest in the country and dates back to more than a thousand years.

In the country's south lies the historic city of Plovdiv. Just like Rome, Plovdiv also sits on seven mountains. Famed for being the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe, Plovdiv shines with its numerous historic relics. While the city's old centre is the focal point, the stunning Roman Amphitheatre is its must-visit attraction. The restored 2nd-century amphitheatre still hosts concerts and events. Bulgaria's third city Varna is located on the Black Sea coast. Even though Varna is often referred to as a port and seaside resort city, plenty of historic elements can be seen throughout the city - take the enormous Roman baths complex for an example. The 19th-century Primorski Park and the Varna Archaeological Museum are the other highlights of the city. The Black Sea coast is also home to the towns of Sozopol and Nesebar. With their cobblestone roads and wooden houses, both towns boast an ancient charm, and excellent beaches and accommodation, that goes without saying. More commercialized than Sozopol, Nesebar is a UNESCO world heritage listed city with Byzantine ruins and medieval churches, and a souvenir market which is one of the best in the region.

Bulgaria's central mountains also houses some of the country's best historical locations. Veliko Tarnovo in the region is one of the oldest towns in the country and former capital of Bulgarian tsars. The restored Tsarevets Fortress along with the old handicraft market - Samovodska Charshiya are the focal points of Veliko Tarnovo. Veliko Tarnovo also makes a great base for exploring the nearby towns like Tryavna, Kazanlak and Etar. While Tryavna is a historic town with cobbled streets and dotted with National Revival-era houses, multicultural Kazanlak which produces two-thirds of the world’s rose oil is known as Bulgaria's Valley of Roses, and hosts the annual Rose Festival every June. Kazanlak also offers some amazing historical sites including a 4th-century BC Thracian tomb. In the Pirin Mountains in southwestern Bulgaria lies Melnik - a small town with over 600 years of wine-making traditions. The town's mountainous landscape and natural rock formations make it one of Bulgaria's most alluring locations and if you are a wine connoisseur, you must take a sip of its famous Melnik 55 red wine.

Bulgaria is also rich in natural treasures like the uniquely shaped Belogradchik Rocks in the remote northwest - which offers great views, photo and hiking opportunities and the ancient Belogradchik Fortress.

From the beautiful Black Sea coastline to its mountainous interior, Bulgaria is a treat for nature lovers while history buffs will be able to explore some of Europe’s most prestigious historical sites and towns.

Must visit places and experiences in Bulgaria: Sozopol, Varna, Nesebar, Rila Monastery, Rila Lakes, Plovdiv, Melnik, Belogradchik, Sofia, Veliko-Tarnovo, Kazanlak

Is Gabrovo the Funniest City in the World? Bulgaria Road Trip Series (Part 4)

Gabrovo, Bulgaria is the home of the Museum of Humor and Satire. And since Stevo is a comedian, we knew we had to check out this mountain city. We were happy to find a major city straddling the Yantra river in the Bulgarian countryside full of parks and statues.

We only had a short time in Gabrovo and would have loved to spend more time there. But the time we did have there was well spent. This is definitely a part of the world we’d like to visit again.

The Museum of Humor and Satire is one of the most unique museums we’ve ever been to. We don’t want to spoil anything, so if you ever have the chance to visit Gabrovo, you must check out the Museum of Humor and Satire. Or am I joking? Watch the video and find out!

This City is STUNNING! I VELIKO TARNOVO, Bulgaria’s Ancient Capital: Bulgaria Road Trip Part 2!

Veliko Tarnovo is one of the most beautiful cities we've ever seen! The old city is built into the valley around a horseshoe bend of the Yantra river which means you getting a stunning view from any vantage point.

We spent a little over 24 hours in Veliko Tarnovo and loved every minute of it. The only regret we had was didn't have more time to wander the cobblestone streets of Bulgaria's ancient capital.

Veliko Tarnovo is definitely a city we want to visit again.

Renting a car in Bulgaria: Bulgarian Road Trip Series

You can travel to most parts of Bulgaria by bus or by train, but we wanted to get out into the countryside of Bulgaria, so we did something that we’ve never done before in our 11 years of traveling the world: we rented a car! We were excited to have the car so we could travel at the pace we wanted and not have to worry about a bus schedule. We were surprised by how easy and affordable renting a car is in Bulgaria.

We started our road trip by renting a car in Plovdiv on our way to Veliko Tarnovo, about three hours north. We made some pit stops along the way to learn more about Bulgarian history. The trees in the hills of Bulgaria were absolutely stunning!

City of Melnik Part 1 | Melnik | Bulgaria | Things To Do In Menik | Visit Bulgaria

City of Melnik Part 1 | Melnik | Bulgaria | Things To Do In Menik | Visit Bulgaria

Check out our travel blogs and travel website for more content on the best places to visit around the world.

In Melnik, there are just 385 inhabitants of this mountain village and pretty much all of its buildings are historic landmarks. The town was founded over 1,000 years ago and has been ruled by various nations.

Melnik is known for its remote location in the Pirin Mountains as well as its winemaking tradition and Agrarian culture, historic buildings, and quaint small-town charm. Just outside of town are the famous Melnik Earth Pyramids, a geological formation that was formed by erosion.

The Melnik Earth Pyramids are a widely visited natural phenomenon overlooking the town from the north at the foothills of the Pirin Mountains. Their height is nearly 100m and there are pleasant hiking trails to and through the bizarre formations.

Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria, is located in the Pirin Mountains, near the Greek border. With a population of less than 300 residents, this charming town is known for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant wine culture. Melnik is a must-visit destination for travellers looking to explore Bulgarian heritage, taste exquisite wines, and immerse themselves in the breathtaking natural beauty of the region.

Melnik's history dates back to antiquity, with evidence of Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine settlements in the region. During the medieval period, the town flourished as a significant trading and cultural centre under Bulgarian and Byzantine rule. Melnik's strategic position, along with its wine production, contributed to its prosperity during this time.

The town's architecture is characterised by the Bulgarian National Revival style, with beautifully preserved houses featuring ornate woodcarvings, stone masonry, and colourful frescoes. A prime example of this architectural style is the Kordopulov House, the largest Bulgarian National Revival house in Melnik, which once belonged to a wealthy wine merchant.

Melnik's wine culture is another major draw for visitors. Today, Melnik's wineries and vineyards continue the tradition of producing high-quality, unique wines that have gained international acclaim. Travellers can visit these wineries for wine tastings and learn more about the town's wine heritage.

Another notable attraction near Melnik is the Rozhen Monastery, one of the best-preserved medieval monasteries in Bulgaria. Founded in the 13th century, the monastery features impressive frescoes, ornate wood carvings, and a peaceful atmosphere that attracts pilgrims and tourists alike.

Melnik is a captivating destination that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. The town's stunning landscapes, rich wine culture, and well-preserved architecture make it an unforgettable experience for anyone seeking to explore the hidden treasures of Bulgaria.

Bulgaria's Beautiful Historical Locations - Timelapse Video - 4K

One of the loveliest Bulgarian historical cities must be Veliko Tarnovo (Велико Търново) with its Tsarevets (Царевец), a medieval stronghold located on a hill. It often features Sound and Light Show, emblematic attraction in Veliko Tarnovo. Audio visual spectacle using music and light to evoke the dramatic and turbulent historic events around Tsarevets and the city of Tarnovo Dramatic music, multicolor lights, lasers and chiming bells are synchronized in a special way. And it is not only Tsarevets that attracts visitors, Veliko Tarnovo has unique position over not one but two spectacular river bends. Not less enjoyable is city of Plovdiv with its historical old town which features Roman theatre and it is one of the world's best-preserved ancient theatres, It was constructed in the 90s of the 1st century AD, probably under the rulership of Emperor Domitian. Nearby Asen's Fortress, a medieval fortress in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains is a great location for a daytime visit. Add little gems like Tryavna town or Dryanovo Monastery with its great locations along the river. Vratsa town might not the the most picturesque place, however its position at Vrachanski Karst Nature Reserve makes it a worthwhile visit.
